- coustoe, on 10/10/2007, -1/+13awesome, but from the looks of it heating or cooling must be a bitch (no insulation)
- D3koy, on 10/10/2007, -2/+14So what's with the world?
I have to buy organic foods, but pre-packaged houses?
I'm so confused... - chancesarent, on 10/10/2007, -0/+9$100 per sq ft isn't cheap. That's about average. In fact, i'd call if kind of expensive for having to live in a Rubik's Cube.
- jenel, on 10/10/2007, -1/+8Also looks like you can't have sex with the lights on anywhere in it.
- Obvioustroll, on 10/10/2007, -0/+6Support your local pre-fabricated craftsmen!
- inigomntoya, on 10/10/2007, -0/+5Can't say I have the taste for the design. It looks like they forgot to complete an office building and wrapped it in contact paper. But, to each his own... There are, after all, some who actually ENJOY living in the suburbs - if you can believe that!
- darkane, on 10/10/2007, -1/+6Sure, it's sexy. But the limited capability of efficiently heating and cooling such a building would make all those 'green' features absolutely worthless in all but the most consistently temperate of climates. So yeah, that's a good solution for part of southern California. Now how about the rest of the world?
- Buelldozer, on 10/10/2007, -1/+6Very nice. How do I hang a picture?
- jenel, on 10/10/2007, -0/+5I'm sure your neighbors like to see you masturbate.
- Obvioustroll, on 10/10/2007, -0/+5I was thinking the same thing. You put one of those in Pennsylvania, the tenants wouldn't last a year.
- inactive, on 10/10/2007, -0/+5Oh yeah, those will work well............NOT!
#1 Reason? Any burglar could be in and out in 15 minutes - AdamTReineke, on 10/10/2007, -2/+6No, its in California. They have perfect weather.
- aussia, on 10/10/2007, -1/+5exactly. it's gorgeous, but to build one here in Canada wouldn't work so well...
- Mothrog, on 10/10/2007, -2/+6Who do they think is going to drop $100 a square foot on a house that looks like a warehouse with no insulation? *****.
- skyfire1, on 10/10/2007, -0/+4When the hurricanes hit you better tell your neighbors to find a bunker.
- RichStradler, on 10/10/2007, -0/+3Wow, is that thing ever ugly from the outside! I know that I wouldn't want one in my neighborhood... that monstrosity would really bring down the property values. Can't imagine ever getting it through our zoning board either.
- inactive, on 10/10/2007, -0/+3a month.
- DrakeGTA, on 10/10/2007, -0/+3So? I like to give me neighbors a good show...
- Faffin, on 10/10/2007, -0/+3your silhoette would show on the walls, like in a tent. - I was thinking the same thing :)
- vern01, on 10/10/2007, -0/+3AFFORDABLE??! NO.
Affordable is $6/SqFt. OR even $10/SqFt. But $100/SqFt is to prohibitively expensive for MOST people(read non-millionairs) - zweben, on 10/10/2007, -0/+3Some people also enjoy living in houses with... real walls.
- maehem, on 10/10/2007, -0/+3Yeah, I would expect a pre-fab to come in at about $50 sq/ft WITH delivery. I wonder if IKEA will ever get into the house business?
- digidelia, on 10/10/2007, -0/+2its like building your house from an erector set!
- HiddenCanuck, on 10/10/2007, -0/+2Uh will it work here in Canada? We go from 30 in the summer to minus 30 in the winter. Celsius.
- auburnguy1000, on 10/10/2007, -0/+2You would never see that type of house in the south where the 100 degree weather is accompanied by 70+% humidity. Down here the eco friendly houses are the ones with good insulation. But in a cooler climate this could work.
- GIFF3, on 10/10/2007, -0/+2Where can I buy one?
- goteki45, on 10/10/2007, -0/+2Thats the ugliest thing i've seen all day, a prison cell looks more cozy than that bedroom
- inmatarian, on 10/10/2007, -0/+2> Made out of lightweight insulated fiberglass panels
The article says that its insulated. - jcaino, on 10/10/2007, -0/+2a week. between rain and hot days, cool nights and otherwise just plain unpredictable weather...at least it keeps us on our toes.
- Jozer99, on 10/10/2007, -0/+2I agree. Thats one of the ugliest houses I have seen, inside and out. I can't imagine living in something that industrial looking full time, it would be very depressing. Plus, how are you supposed to walk around in a house who's floor is made of cement and steel vents? I like to walk in socks, not steel boots.
- RJGII, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1Sorry, but if it's a prefab, why are there pics of it starting from scratch? Must be the blueprints that are prefabricated... I'd say modular, but that's just me.
- wisie, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1I really like it but think it would stick out like a sore thumb
- circle26, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1not to mention the fact that having no windows will be a bitch to get through any zoning department.
- zweben, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1......What??
- stephant, on 10/10/2007, -2/+3Looks kind of neat, I guess. Still, those hard floors, hard ceilings and hard walls would be all noisy and the echo would be impossible to stand. I'd rather live in my normal house with sheetrock, carpet and insulation. No point in going deaf for overboard conservation. For those of you that want to digg me down, seriously, go into an all concrete block or similar structure . . . you'll gouge your eyes out before you leave. Way too noisy.
- maehem, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1Help! I'm trapped in a "Yes" album cover!
- CanoeBuilder, on 10/10/2007, -1/+2 "Made out of lightweight insulated fiberglass panels"
- xochiltm, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1It's a really innovative idea, although I really wonder how practical it is.
- 3tcp, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1The concept is sound but it's too plain and doesn't leave much for architectural creativity or uniqueness. An entire house made up of a translucent grid pattern is too ugly for normal people to buy into it..
- SloppyJoe, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1exactly... all these "Eco friendly" yadda yadda yadda houses are great.. but what will they look like in 10, 20, or 50 years... my home is over 50 years old and rock solid. Just seems like a poor investment and a bad idea in general to me.
- KingGorilla, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1You're talking about TV and movie California. Here in the real world our weather is pretty bland. Especially up north
- NsinU8, on 10/10/2007, -1/+2This ones pretty cool too.... http://www.luminhaus.com/
- inactive, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1A big storm would be a very traumatic experience in that. Just imagine the wind noise there would be in that thing ! The thin fiberglass panels may have an r-value, but it couldn't be too high. But move-able interior walls is definitely the way to go...
- elasticband, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1prefabricate |prēˈfabriˌkāt| verb [ trans. ] [usu. as adj. ] ( prefabricated) manufacture sections of (esp. a building or piece of furniture) to enable quick or easy assembly on site : prefabricated homes.
- inactive, on 10/10/2007, -1/+1dugg down for "linkinn"
- lareiko66, on 10/10/2007, -0/+0Noticed the surfboard and the beanbag chair. Cool place for singles and couples. Do you need to apply sunblock during the day for the diffused sunlight?
- Dextergreen, on 10/10/2007, -0/+0Some people cling to old ideals no matter how impractical.
Oh wait, I'm an architect; we're all about impractical ideals. - almostnormal, on 10/10/2007, -0/+0Those fiberglass panels won't hold up to sunlight long term. Maybe 20 years or so. Then what do you do?
- TwwIX, on 10/10/2007, -1/+1One fart and it falls apart.
- SigurRos42, on 07/13/2009, -0/+0Theoretically talking, this house looks indeed like a good place to live in. However, in my opinion, the practical 'examination' of the problem will proove exactly the opposite. http://www.chicago-insulation.org
