- anotherjack, on 11/14/2008, -0/+10Straw Bale is good stuff for drier climates. It's good for cold or hot weather, leaves the home at a milder temperature. The insulation on standard 19 inch bales is almost r-50, standard pink fiberglass is usually r-15. Construction is much cheaper than with normal homes, because the bales are made to be thrown away. They're automatically recycled because it's a byproduct of the growing of foods like rye, barley, etc. Bales are usually bundled and baled just to get the unwanted straw out of the field after harvest. Awesome stuff in a lot of ways, but don't get it wet.
- acmaurer, on 11/13/2008, -0/+8ditto. it's awesome when people are so generous with their time
- anotherjack, on 11/14/2008, -0/+6Plastered straw bales don't usually burn, they burn much less well than wood does. When set alight they tend to smolder at a lower temp rather than flame up suddenly. That gives you time to notice the burning and do something to fight it.

- inactive, on 11/14/2008, -1/+6The next project is to make a home with sticks.
- belfastbiker, on 11/14/2008, -0/+3Thing I don't get about solar panels, if they're good, why not just cover the roof with them?
If it's good for two panels, why not four? or sixteen?
And why the hell we using bricks instead of bale normally? - cddict1, on 11/14/2008, -0/+3Is there any new vacancy? count me as well.
- prth8machine, on 11/14/2008, -1/+3Wow, I thought there was no way this wasn't from the onion.
- crossmr, on 11/14/2008, -0/+2well if it rains they can put it inside.... oh...
- isunktheship, on 11/14/2008, -1/+3I think I read about this, clearly stick technology is where it's at, some radicals may argue bricks though...
- crossmr, on 11/14/2008, -0/+2turns out it was just for target practice
- Hubso, on 11/14/2008, -2/+3I'd prefer a Christian Bale home.

Every time a person successfully builds a green building they are also building such a future for all of us. I personally am interested in earthbag building but it too is another green building technique.
- anotherjack, on 11/15/2008, -0/+1"Shoes and hat" aka high-ish cement foundation, and wide eaves. Presuming you don't let your roof leak, and don't live in very wet areas ( I'm thinking Portland ) you should be fine.
- raada, on 11/14/2008, -0/+1They get time off from work to work... sounds like a not-so-lucky deal...
- hlsgr01, on 11/14/2008, -1/+0Wow, cool job... something is better than nothing!!!
