- Jeepy, on 11/19/2008, -1/+98When you want to get down, chop trees down to the ground, Cocaine.
- Brad12088, on 11/19/2008, -4/+89If their own health and well being won't make them stop snorting cocaine, I doubt 'saving the rainforest' will.
- damack, on 11/19/2008, -2/+52I'm really considering quitting cocaine after reading this article. Those poor trees!
- thesubs, on 11/20/2008, -4/+43... Well then legalise it, :) make it unprofitable for dugg lords to burn&raid the rain forest...
cheaper and cleaner drugs, everybody wins... - inactive, on 11/20/2008, -3/+36McDonalds eaters are destroying the rainforest. Even if coke heads do more per capita, there's a helluva lot more big macs consumed than ***** cocaine.
- kenvsryu, on 11/20/2008, -4/+27Legalize and they don't have to grow it in the rain forest. Increase yield, increase quality, lower the cost.
- ztexas, on 11/20/2008, -1/+23The environmental degradation is the result of cocaine's illegal status, rather than some implicit quality that it possesses. Its illegality forces it to be grown in remote locations with poor yields.
One could argue that every cocaine bust kills the rain forest... the equivalent amount must be grown again to meet demand.
Maybe once we're totally broke (Dow into 7,000 territory today) the WoD will end. Then we can treat addiction as the medical problem that it is, rather than criminalizing it. - ileftfark, on 11/19/2008, -0/+21They make Downtown kind of *****, too.
- Tddupre, on 11/20/2008, -5/+25ill stick to Meth & heroin, Ecstacy is bad for you
- scratt, on 11/20/2008, -2/+20You know 'The War on Drugs" is in trouble when it stoops to this level.
Global Government policies destroys the rain forests. Period.
How about we do a comparison on how much paperwork this particular police officer produces daily compared to the average cocaine users 'snorting' habits, and then see who is actually deforesting the world more quickly!
Good grief. - thegrantman, on 11/20/2008, -0/+18Cocaine is destroying the rainforests,,,,what a line.
- Autodidaddict, on 11/20/2008, -4/+21I love propaganda because it's so delicious.....
You really do weaken the valid points of cocaine=bad and rainforests=good when you force to tie to two together....didn't they learn that with the ***** "XXX funds terrorism" PSA's we've been hearing the past 7 years? - shaun944, on 11/20/2008, -1/+16If you do any research on the agriculture in south america, you'll discover that the ground isn't very fertile w/o the rainforest there, and these fields aren't allowed to lay fallow, so the crops raze all remaining nutrients, leaving lands that can't grow future crops. So yes, the land loses that ability to grow future crops.
- NixiePixel, on 11/19/2008, -7/+21Switch to Ecstacy, you'll feel better ;)
- inactive, on 11/20/2008, -6/+20Oh ***** off with this *****.
That's like saying buying marijuana supports terrorism.
GTFO of here with this green *****. - esteskid, on 11/19/2008, -10/+23That is a BS calculation, you only need more rain forest destroyed when there is more demand for the coke, unless the land already cleared loses all of its ability to grow coca after one crop, which I highly doubt, then you only need to clear land for new users or increased use
- commenter01, on 11/20/2008, -0/+12hate to say it, but Mr. Babyman might qualify
- Otto, on 11/20/2008, -1/+12The war on drugs is what is killing the rainforests, not the drug itself or the users of that drug.
If the drug was legally grown and sold, then there'd be no need to keep it growing in secret, or in places with rainforests and somewhat lacking in laws as well, meh? - joshmoney, on 11/20/2008, -1/+10"Dugg Lord" - Is that like a digg user and a drug lord combined? Does such a person even exist?
- dumpstermuffin, on 11/20/2008, -0/+9cocaine users don't like destroying the rain forest... they just like the way it smells.
- FredSpeaking, on 11/20/2008, -2/+10'Santos said many middle-class Britons who used cocaine were unaware of its environmental impact. "For somebody who drives a hybrid, who recycles, who is worried about global warming - to tell him that that night of partying will destroy 4m square of rainforest might lead him to make another decision."'
- commenter01, on 11/20/2008, -1/+94 sq meters/gram, 1000 sq meters... 250 grams/day? I think you're underestimating demand by several orders of magnitude lol.
- soulpiercer7, on 11/20/2008, -1/+9It's the drugs illegality that makes it profitable to grow it there anyway. If you legalized it and let it be grown on real farms, the rain forest won't need to be cut down and the violence will virtually disappear.
***** prohibition... - redfan, on 11/20/2008, -0/+8In fairness, most of that cocaine goes to Amy Winehouse.
- sh0k, on 11/20/2008, -1/+9Source?
- Surferess, on 11/19/2008, -4/+12Excellent Clapton reference.
- dball48, on 11/20/2008, -0/+7http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hippies
- hurrayforschool, on 11/20/2008, -0/+7Cocaine use attributes to rainforest destruction... that's not as cool as what I imagined: Coked up college students running through the jungle with machetes, killing sloths and salting the vegetation.
- mrsteveman1, on 11/20/2008, -2/+8I think the real story is, if this weren't a black market item it wouldn't be getting manufactured by destroying the rainforest.....at least thats what i read into it among other things.
- Chjoma10, on 11/20/2008, -1/+7So that means L.A. and New York destroy around 1,000 square meters/day?
- benologist, on 11/20/2008, -1/+6Meh. The cocaine guys are still ***** brutal *****. It's not like chopping down trees was the worst of their sins.
The Colombian VP was probably just trying to put it into a context metrofaguals understand... "oh teh environmentz!!". - Autodidaddict, on 11/20/2008, -0/+5Forget LA and New York, I know people that are destroying 1,000 square meters a week
- inactive, on 11/19/2008, -4/+9Nooooo, stupid ass people who burn down the forests destroy them. Im not defending drug addicts, just trying to place blame where it should be.
- UnarmedHippo, on 11/20/2008, -0/+5wat
- Corrosionx, on 11/20/2008, -0/+4Because it's illegal.
- every2ndcounts, on 11/20/2008, -1/+5source?
- JustinBobby08, on 11/20/2008, -0/+4So can someone tell what is NOT killing the rain forests???
- mrgeekguy, on 11/20/2008, -0/+4Curse you Amy Winehouse!
- dbs1221, on 11/20/2008, -2/+6Its more the US-Columbian policy of burning down cocaine crops, which get moved burned, moved burned etc.
- commenter01, on 11/20/2008, -0/+3Nah, he's talking about the rampaging british hordes armed with machetes, high on cocaine, that plow through the forests in search of more white stuff.
- em22, on 11/20/2008, -0/+3What rubbish. Then legalise the use of coke. Stupid article. People have been taking cocain for thousands of years before the nanny states came into power.
- MWeather, on 11/20/2008, -1/+4Yet another reason to legalize it.
- shig, on 11/20/2008, -0/+3As far as I know, coca plants are green, and grow in rain forests.
- scoottie, on 11/20/2008, -1/+4i hope you are joking because plants (ie trees) take in CO2 and give us Oxygen
- Grin23, on 11/20/2008, -0/+3I wouldn't trust a black man that wheres diamonds anyway..... thats some major hypocrisy when 1000s of africans die mining those diamonds... the same goes for coke
- Autodidaddict, on 11/20/2008, -2/+51,000 square meters/day of rainforest being destroyed is so little compared to how much actually is destroyed:
One and one-half acres of rainforest are lost every second with tragic consequences for both developing and industrial countries.
http://www.rain-tree.com/facts.htm - nicksorrells, on 11/19/2008, -2/+5damn, they finally found a good reason
- D2Much, on 11/20/2008, -0/+2I see what you did there.
- djb28, on 11/20/2008, -0/+2Those "stupid ass people" are trying to make a living. Not all of them grow coca; some of them are trying to grow food. You know, to eat.
- holyreality, on 11/20/2008, -2/+4kinda makes me want to blow a line.
