iow this study is a refinement of the models and concludes that climate change is occuring and that the current models are largely correct.

Nor did a single climate model predict that global temperatures would peak in 1998 and then decrease.... admitting they're wrong on Antarctica is a start, but they all need to be far more transparent about model performance (or lack thereof). I wouldn't expect it, though, because that jeopardizes their grant money.

It's not new information that Antarctica is experiencing (and will experience in the future) an increase in accumulation and gaining mass. Greenland, however, is undoubtedly melting and will eventually disappear; although this is not in the near future. The mass balance of Greenland is decreasing at an increasing rate, especially since the 1990s as the ice sheet has reacted rapidly by a sudden increase in outlet glacier velocities; this has not been accounted for in models.

tl;dr: Greenland is melting, the result is that there is a net increase in sea level change which is not offset by Antarctica's recent cooling.

This is very interesting. I am of the belief that global warming is a "new communism" that people will unite against just because the people who control them tell them to.

I had a conversation with him today about how it's a fraud and it's just a campaign to make you hate your fellow man because that gives the government control of your life. When my father told me humanity is the enemy, I asked him, who then do we get rid of? What family can you name that deserves to be erased for the good of the world? When you examine the lives of each person, we all BENEFIT this Earth in some way and, to put it the way I've heard religious zealots put it, God doesn't make junk.

I hope the new models take into account the present underheating in the Arctic. The old prediction for an arctic summer melt was 2038, now it's 2013.

I do think global warming is real, just nearly to the extent that Mr. Gore and others would have you belief. Btw, I found it pretty sad that Gore took advantage of the over 100,000 deaths in Myanmar to blame the cyclone on global warming.

Be sure you actually RTFA before you leave a dumbass comment saying this article completely disproves global warming / climate change. All of their other models on all 6 other continents are correct.

one thing to note, even though parts of antartica have melted, and during the summer months it has done so every year, this is normal for it to do, something about summer being warmer than winter, the science of that is beyond me though.

One interesting thing however is the overall mass of ice in antartica is growing, even though one western region has seen a diminished amount of ice. In other words its not melting away, it isnt flooding the seas with water which will cause people like where I am (Amsterdam, 10-20 meters (33-66 feet) below sea level depending on where) to sink into the ocean.

With the other report that came out that predicts the next decade will be cooler, its all part of this 60 year weather cycle that is according to the researchers in question, barely understood, that just happens to be coming now (as it did 60 years ago when the global cooling period came on).

Lets not forget all the screams in the 70s about how we are facing the next ice age (because of the multiple decade global cooling period which covered the 1940s-1980s). Of course this was before the internet was called the internet, so most people just thought it was environmental wackos trying to predict weather patterns further than any weatherman has successfully done it.

People have been wrong in the past, they will be wrong in the future, and this report does confirm that some were just hyping parts of the effect for their own purposes, er I mean due to a scientific error but you can trust everything else they say 100% (until it gets conflicting data). Why the IPCC report predicted that it would already be warmer than it currently is by now (lets not forget about the early 2000's prediction in that report either).

I've been getting buried for months by insisting that the data is inconclusive. I'm not saying there is no climate change, I'm saying that the bees dying off from air pollution is a much bigger and more immediate concern and this has definitely been an overinflated political bullet point. I also wonder how the money is being managed with the whole carbon credit thing and if you can't somehow follow a money market or bond benefit in percentage points back to a certain philanthropist.

Don't you usually want to overstate negative scenarios? For instance, that bridge might not collapse at 80tons, so lets just post the sign at a healthy 100tons. Definitely don't want to understate and look foolish!

The eight warmest years in the GISS record have all occurred since 1998, and the 14 warmest years in the record have all occurred since 1990.

I am so tired of hearing about the Poles melting or getting warmer, or whatever ***** is being spewed today. According to all geological evidence, the Poles being frozen over is an overall new occurence that only started in the Miocene as the Earth started heading into an Ice Age, before that for most of the last 4.5 billion years the Poles were ice free. That would tell pretty much any intelligent sentient being that the Poles now warming up and Melting, is likely them normalizing back to their pre-Ice Age state.

regardless of which model is more or less correct, I think we can all come to an agreement that dumping billions of tonnes of crap into our atmosphere probably isn't the best idea ever.

Scientists of the world have come to a consensus. The data bears it out, and the trend is not only following the models, but outpacing the predictions of warming by large amounts.

What a novel idea! Climate scientists comparing their models to actual climate, and they are found to be exaggerating their results, which we all knew.

Well now, isn't this an inconvenient truth.

This is getting real scary. I imagine the world is flat theory would have had many believers from some of the responses in this discussion. Things are changing. Just look at the results in the real world. We are losing glaciers. Just look. It is occurring faster each year.
