- spriggig, on 07/19/2009, -1/+10I don't want to do it, but for those who do, more power to them. Also, more people familiar with handling bees cannot be a bad thing.
- twiztidsinz, on 07/20/2009, -0/+9It's more than a hyperbole...
No bees = no honey..
No honey = angry bears..
Angry bears = OH ***** I'M BEING MAULED BY A ***** BEAR!
Question: What kind of bear is best? - sooperskip, on 07/19/2009, -0/+6People attribute the quote "If the bee disappeared off the surface of the globe then man would only have four years of life left." to Albert Einstein.
1. There's no proof that Einstein ever said it.
2. It's hyperbole, to say the least.
But the fact remains that the bee population has taken a significant hit globally, and the repercussions (though not likely to destroy mankind) will be quite devastating. You can say goodbye to apples, nuts, broccoli, avocados, soybeans, asparagus, celery, squash and cucumbers, citrus fruit, peaches, kiwi, cherries, blueberries, cranberries, strawberries, cantaloupe, melons..... the list goes on.
The bottom line is we're kinda' ***** if we loose the bees. So if these people want to do their thing in the city.... that's kinda' awesome. I'd say that it's the best animal introduction to NYC since Sarah Jessica Parker brought her horse-face to Manhattan. - Barackalypse, on 07/20/2009, -0/+5See how urban bees ought to be dealt with:
http://forums.somethingawful.com/showthread.php?th ... - ChstrCopperpot, on 07/20/2009, -0/+5That's debatable. There are basically two schools of thought...
- Lederhosed, on 07/20/2009, -0/+5In San Francisco there is an outfit called B-911 that will come and rescue you if your urban bees get out of control. Or so I was told by a guy who has bees in his backyard.
- xxacefirexx, on 07/20/2009, -0/+4That's a ridiculous question.
- grungemusic3001, on 07/20/2009, -0/+3We live in the burbs and keep bees. A couple years back we got 12 gallons of honey (not joking). Its quite a bit of fun to watch them attack intruders in the hive (works best in an observation hive - http://www.beeclass.com/dts/observation.htm . We lost the hive that gave us so much honey about a year back, but we took a wild hive out of a neighbor's garage and they've been going strong.
- jackypants, on 07/20/2009, -0/+3everything is deadly to some people, hon. peanut dust is deadly to some people, but we still allow delicious peanuts in our urban areas.
Also, bees, as in honey bees (which is what the article is talking about) aren't terribly aggressive. Yellow Jackets are a far more aggressive species, and far more numerous than honeybees. Bees need flowers and plants and the like, whereas yellow jackets can feed off of your garbage. Those pesky critters that won't leave you alone at picnics? Those are yellow jackets. The vast majority of people who've been stung by a "bee" were actually stung by a yellow jacket or other species of wasp, esp in urban areas. - Memnochxx, on 07/20/2009, -0/+3Fact: Bears eat beets.
- 13373h4X0r, on 07/20/2009, -1/+3Should an inner-city dweller keep a hamlet for bees?
To bee, or not to bee: that is the question:
Whether 'tis nobler in the mind to suffer
The stings and arrows of outrageous bees,
Or to take arms against a swarm of bees,
And by opposing end them? - Y0tsuya, on 07/20/2009, -0/+1Or the whole state of Clownifornia.
- zeth006, on 07/20/2009, -0/+2But those only provide the grains and carbs.
- Splat313, on 07/19/2009, -0/+1DJ Honey, drop it. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7m5vt07W2n4 Yo, where my bees at?
- diggduggjoe, on 07/20/2009, -1/+2I have seen more wasps on my plants, I would rather have the bees for they are more docile.
That said, I have seen for the first time in my life the bubble bee moth. Wow, what a creature!
Other species will take over, I believe, for general pollination. However, much of agriculture uses mobile bee colonies to force crops into a predictable cycle. We still need to figure it out for without knowledge we will not know if this can happen to the other species, too. - diggduggjoe, on 07/20/2009, -1/+2Fruit is needed. Man cannot live on bread alone.
Corn is one of the problems with obesity. Empty calories made cheap through government subsidies. - PacketScan, on 07/20/2009, -0/+1Could it be, no pesticides
- roomaustin, on 07/20/2009, -0/+1Bees? they don't allow bees in here.
- 4rp4n3t, on 07/20/2009, -2/+3Bear breasts?
- carbonetc, on 07/20/2009, -0/+1This is one of those odd hobbies I've been wanting to get into for a long time. It's good to see that it can be done successfully without having 10 acres of land at your disposal.
The city might even make more sense than a rural area; you don't have the ship the honey. You can probably walk to three different stores who would sell it for you once you bottled it. Hell, in your apartment building alone you might have enough interested people to take it off your hands. - Skootles, on 07/26/2009, -0/+1Dug for "OH THE BEEMANITY"
- haikuFU, on 07/20/2009, -0/+1I would be ***** pissed if one of my neighbors started keeping bees. I was stung hundreds of times (at once) as a small child, and I still have nightmares about it every few days. I ***** hate bees.
- RSRForge, on 07/20/2009, -1/+2Actually, they're not dangerous - it's the people who are weak.
- yardie, on 07/20/2009, -0/+1You'll have to drop strawberries from your list. According to this site http://gears.tucson.ars.ag.gov/book/chap7/strawber ... strawberries do need help pollinating, wind will only do so much and results in more defective berries. If the bees don't do it you'll have to do it by hand.
- grungemusic3001, on 07/20/2009, -0/+1"Urban areas are not the place to have colonies of free wandering dangerous things."
You mean like humans driving cars?!?!
Half a ton of steel, 100lb of gasoline going 70mph and ten feet in any direction is the exact same thing.
And you're worried about bees... - inactive, on 07/20/2009, -1/+1Americans should start planting native plants in their backyards instead of introduced species- I redid half of my yard this year and saw a *ton* of native bees whereas the other half, still planted with exotics, only attracts European honeybees.
- herbsFTW, on 07/20/2009, -2/+2Let's say bees become extinct. Not only are there a plethora of other species capable of pollinating flowering plants, but most angiosperms have the ability to self pollinate. (Just in case, I don't know the bees where to disappear). Also, there are plenty of greenhouses and horticulture centers around the U.S. and the world capable of sustaining any plant species that comes into danger of becoming extinct due to the loss of the bees. Besides, this world does not belong to you, me, or any human; so if we get wiped out because of a few missing bees then maybe we deserve to go the way of the Dodo. Last but not least; no one is worried about honey bees. All the hype was first stemmed from the African Killer Bee which is an exotic species to the new world (the Americas). Lately, because of the warm weather, this species has managed to make its way farther and farther North. Combined with new interactions with new species and massive extermination via exterminators in urban areas, why wouldn't the bees be disappearing? But to get back to the article, as long as they don't escape and become pests for the neighbors... to each his own.
Peace - ASimpleDad, on 07/20/2009, -1/+2You know, the European honey bee population has taken a huge hit around me. But guess what? This summer, I am seeing the coolest bee and other pollinator species that I have never seen before. In fact, I have more pollinating insects in my yard then I have ever seen before. In the past, it was the occasional honey bee, but now there are all kinds of things on my flowers.
- gusyehia, on 07/20/2009, -1/+1nice video thanks
- RSRForge, on 07/20/2009, -0/+0"there are plenty of greenhouses and horticulture centers around the U.S. and the world capable of sustaining any plant species that comes into danger of becoming extinct due to the loss of the bees" - and who's gonna pollinate them, you? How about entire crops??
"because of a few missing bees" - a few?!?!?! And WHO do you think caused that?? It is us, humans! - coraleaterlinda, on 07/20/2009, -0/+0i love to watch bees, even though i've been stung a bunch of times. I think this is a great idea, especially since bees have been dying off like crazy lately.
- Zippo, on 07/20/2009, -1/+12 QUARTS OF 87 OCTANE GASOLINE REPORTING FOR DUTY SIR!
- Benno, on 07/20/2009, -1/+1beads?
- Barackalypse, on 07/20/2009, -2/+2Bees are over-rated, the majority of daily human caloric intake is supplied by self-pollinating plants like wheat, corn, and rice.
- pingless420, on 07/20/2009, -0/+0Reminded me of Tron by the end. Not sure why.
- Barackalypse, on 07/20/2009, -2/+1Actually, we don't need bees at all, wheat, corn, rice, and soybeans all self-pollinate as do tomatoes, peppers, peanuts, and strawberries. People seem to think eco-systems are some fragile things and all life depends on all other life, but yet forget that evolution has killed off more species than currently exist today with no detrimental effects. Sitting on the top of the food chain insulates us from extinction based on what happens to a single other species.
- ivandurakov, on 07/20/2009, -2/+1"Habitat disappearing" ? -- the article itself says bees thrive in the urban environment, which will be just as true for feral as it is for tended colonies. So this is simply the red-green caption writer assuming the sky is falling, as is religiously correct for the global warming cult. Mother Gaia and the high priest Algore will be pleased with you for your faith. After a number of slow years, the number of bees in my suburban location is up sharply during the past year as the local feral colonies recover from mite infestations and CCD. They don't need any "help" from the Demsheviks, sorta like the rest of us.
- Mike17102, on 07/20/2009, -3/+2Bees are dangerous, even deadly to some people. Urban areas are not the place to have colonies of free wandering dangerous things.
- MadHarvey, on 07/20/2009, -2/+1In before Pedobear.
Also, I vote for Polar - Managerk, on 07/20/2009, -1/+02 splat
Cool video!
P.S. I love honey :) - zeth006, on 07/20/2009, -3/+1Dugg for the lulz.
- ivandurakov, on 07/20/2009, -4/+2This demonstrates why *****, rather than bees, should be banned from urb-suburbia. The man is clearly a product of substandard government schooling.
