- inactive, on 06/04/2009, -6/+67I can not stand when I see a cigarette smoker that flicks their butts out the window let alone in the ocean. Do not push a dirty habit on the enviroment...
- CaptainPlanet, on 06/03/2009, -6/+53wow, quiting is not only healthy for yourself but for the planet.
- solboldi, on 06/04/2009, -4/+45"An estimated 1.69 billion pounds of butts are littered each year worldwide"
How alarming is that number? - ironhide, on 06/04/2009, -9/+46This is one of the main things that piss me off about smokers, you want to smoke? Fine. Deal with your trash in a civilized manner. The world isn't your friggin' ashtray.
- inactive, on 06/04/2009, -2/+37I field dress all my smokes and dispose of them properly, have for over 20 years. Butts are evidence with YOUR DNA on them, I leave no evidence behind. From a tactical standpoint, throwing garbage down leaves a trail the enemy could follow straight to you.
I never, ever throw them on the ground. - missinglink, on 06/04/2009, -5/+38More smokers would put their butts in ash trays if the anti-smoking folks hadn't forced every public and private organization to get rid of them.
- stealthspc, on 06/04/2009, -13/+42***** cigarettes, they are horrible for you.
- pintomp3, on 06/04/2009, -2/+29Save the planet, smoke unfiltered.
- MissOthmar, on 06/03/2009, -3/+22Nasty stuff. And Second-Hand Butts doesn't roll off the tongue so nicely.
- burningrobot, on 06/04/2009, -1/+19As a smoker, I throw away my butts, merely as an act of common courtesy. The same way I don't blow smoke in your face, unless you deserve it.
- jnichols, on 06/04/2009, -0/+17Actually cigarettes have a net positive impact on the economy of 32 cents a pack according to Vanderbilt University economist Kip Viscusi....
you forget that 90% of the cost of a pack of smokes is taxes and we die 10 years earlier so we don't suck up all of the social security, medicare, and pension money...
So actually you should go punch all the non-smoking old people in retirement homes because they are sucking up all your social security - Beylan, on 06/04/2009, -2/+19That's what happens when you take away all the ash trays.
- missinglink, on 06/04/2009, -5/+21But it's pretty unhealthy for kids, since the tax on cigarettes now pays for the State Children's Health Insurance Program (SCHIP)...
Next time you want to give a smoker an evil eye, consider thanking them instead! - blah247, on 06/04/2009, -3/+17More people should smoke... AIDs just isn't cutting it on reducing the human population.
- LloydBentsen, on 06/04/2009, -4/+18Forgive my self-righteousness or whatever you want to call it, but while I am a smoker, I don't toss my butts in any other place than an ashtray or if there is not one near I put my cig out (to prevent a fire) and save it for the next trashcan I can find. I just wanted to let you know that not all of us are litterers. Peace.
- Blochead, on 06/04/2009, -2/+15Portable ash trays, lets follow the Japanese way. They smoke like chimneys but at least clean up for themselves..
- VelcroMonkey, on 06/04/2009, -0/+13Dwight?
- Tophillious, on 06/04/2009, -0/+13Did you just compare cigarettes to heroin?
- Kitt84, on 06/04/2009, -4/+17Seems funny to me that everyone is so quick to condemn smoking lately... Every day it seems like I see 10 articles about legalizing pot, and how great it is... and 10 articles about how bad cigarettes are. Ciggy butts are hardly the biggest concern of mine right now... and as a smoker, I dispose of my butts appropriately. Want to be concerned about marine life? Good, but how about you start with something like the Pacific Garbage Patch? Pretty sure that's still getting bigger by the day.
- inactive, on 06/04/2009, -2/+14Actually Camel filters are 100% cotton and biodegrade in under 2 years.
- ironhide, on 06/04/2009, -2/+14Why don't smokers deal with their trash like responsible adults? I am sure it's not that hard.
- 10ofDiamonds, on 06/04/2009, -0/+12I second that.
- MrBogard, on 06/04/2009, -4/+15Eh, I prefer to smoke them.
- SpeedStix, on 06/04/2009, -4/+15really? I didn't know.
- TurdFaceManLove, on 06/04/2009, -6/+17Gotta love all of the self-righteous ***** here in the comments. Do you drive a vehicle that gets less than 30 mpg? Do you leave the water on when you brush your teeth or shave? Do you order take out and use the styrofoam containers they come in? Do you use plastic bags from the store for your groceries? Don't get me wrong, I don't smoke and I wouldn't promote anything they do, but for *****'s sake worry about your own bad habits before you so vehemently judge others for theirs.
- MrBogard, on 06/04/2009, -1/+12Word. I'm going to light up now.
- fmaxwell, on 06/04/2009, -3/+14Like that does any good when cop drive down the road flicking cigarette butts out their car windows.
- whoisshe, on 06/04/2009, -0/+10Not condoning it in the slightest, but I doubt all these people saying that they hate litter are green-perfect themselves. Metal, Plastic, Green bags, Food Oil, Computers, etc.. A slightly better, although equally inconceivable notion would be to restrict the types of filters that cigarette manufacturers can make.
- ohplease, on 06/04/2009, -11/+21Listen, it's important to smoke cigarettes, otherwise who will think you're a cool bad ass rebel who lives by his/her own rules? Lighting smelly fires in your mouth is a popularity trump card.
- blackcloud333, on 06/04/2009, -5/+15Gotta wonder how many fat people are bitching about smokers in this forum. Anyway, I snuff my cigarettes out and throw them away when I come across a trash can.
- zephc, on 06/04/2009, -4/+14As far back as I can remember, I never understood why cigarette butts scattered on the ground were not considered litter.
- inactive, on 06/04/2009, -8/+17This article is propaganda. Camel is the most widely smoked brand in the USA and it's filters are all 100% biodegradable cotton. It can't even be considered littering to throw them on the ground.
- EddiE314, on 06/04/2009, -0/+9Because prohibition of alcohol and the war on drugs are working so well. Oh wait..
- ironhide, on 06/04/2009, -1/+10That's like saying your household garbage ends up somewhere so it's ok to throw in into the street.
- jnichols, on 06/04/2009, -0/+9The one thing everyone forgets is smoking is delicious and nutritious... ok maybe just delicious
- MrBogard, on 06/04/2009, -3/+12I honestly thought they were cotton... but I still throw them out as often as I can.
- KraftDinner101, on 06/04/2009, -0/+8Some of our brightest and most talented people who have ever lived and are still living smoked. Perhaps out of ignorance because of the lack of evidence from their time, but some still do even with the mountains of evidence. Should we kill them too?
- inactive, on 06/04/2009, -7/+15then quit being angry on the internet and actually say something when you see someone litter
- CoreyHalliwell, on 06/04/2009, -0/+8Sir Mix A Lot would be proud :D
- Kitt84, on 06/04/2009, -1/+9Ever tell a minor that they can't do something? Yeah... that'll work. They can't buy cigarettes NOW, but most people get addicted before they turn 18.
- marcb83, on 06/04/2009, -0/+8yea the government was stupid for linking smokers to child care because if people quit the children lose out.
- LloydBentsen, on 06/04/2009, -0/+8Peanut, what about other risks that people take? I'm seriously not trying to trivialize this, but this becomes a very dangerous exercise. Do we start punishing those that drink? Or how about those that drive more miles a year? What about the obese? What about people that choose to live in cities with dangerous air quality levels? Under your logic we should all be punching each other in the face, which would be pretty exciting if you ask me.
- Rivfader, on 06/04/2009, -4/+12In your face hippies.
- kylere, on 06/04/2009, -1/+8When I saw "1.69 billion pounds of butts." I thought this was a story about Queen Latifah and Roseanne Barr making a chick flick.
- Coffeedemon, on 06/04/2009, -3/+10I'm not doubting that there is a lot but I'd like to see some math. I just did a rough calculation... at 1/2 a gram per butt that makes an estimated 1,534,520,000,000 cigarettes smoked per year (which get littered.... you have to assume that a lot don't get littered).
It was hard to read all those zeros so I might be off a bit. Anyway, my point is that that seems high and therefore makes the anti-smoking groups look like a pack of liars (which wouldn't surprise me given the way they calculate the stats on cigarette packs. Is your "fact" that that smoking kills more people than ANYTHING ELSE, EVER based on any particular number of cigarettes smoked per day or do you really expect people to believe that smoking 3 a day will kill them as fast as someone who does a pack or two (the latter being the likely basis for the deaths per year stats).
For the record, I've been free of that crap for almost 2 months and feel great I'd just like to see some truth sprinkled in with our servings of propaganda. - inactive, on 06/04/2009, -3/+10Getting them to be responsible very hard.
many people are borderline retarded. you see them empty their ashtrays in the street. it would be very hard to get them to change. probably harder than training a cat to use the toilet. - TurdFaceManLove, on 06/04/2009, -0/+7No, it's not. And I'm not criticizing anyone for bringing up the subject. The culling of bad habits, such as the ones I've mentioned, begins with awareness. What I'm speaking to here is the vilifying of smokers and the language used to address them in these comments. Maybe a lot of smokers just don't give any thought to the flicking of a butt because, just like smoking, it has become a bad habit or they don't understand the implications of their actions because they aren't noticeable on a small scale. It's irresponsible, yes, but it doesn't automatically make them thoughtless environment-hating *****.
If you treat others with respect and address them as such then maybe they will respond positively. If you project negativity then you're going to receive a negative reaction. And I'm sure that no matter what example I give you will refute it, Ironside. But no one here, including me, is innocent when it comes to our interaction with the environment. Unless you live off of the grid you are harming it. Let's just stop trying to pretend like our ***** doesn't stink when addressing other peoples bad habits, is all I'm really getting at here.
Oh and just a kind word of advice, you can inform the local restaurant you're ordering from that you're bringing your own container (tupperware) and they will happily oblige. After all, recycling, although a better alternative than a dump, still requires a tremendous amount of energy for which we use fossil fuel to produce. Peace. - MrBogard, on 06/04/2009, -2/+9Yes! Ban everything bad for us please! Oh.. right.. politicians smoke too.
- JUSTINS13, on 06/04/2009, -7/+14NOT AS ALARMING AS OUR $11 TRILLION NATIONAL DEBT
- CoreyHalliwell, on 06/04/2009, -1/+7Or Pot. At least you can smoke roaches.
