- masterm1nd, on 12/15/2007, -2/+27I think you can sum it up into one point.
1. Don't listen to people on the internet. - chedabob, on 12/15/2007, -8/+28How about instead of wasting millions on studying something that is just going to make the environment worse than it is, why not use that money to research clean energy sources, such as more efficient solar panels?
- Shawshanksr, on 12/15/2007, -2/+16a whole ton?? are you serious?
- inactive, on 12/15/2007, -5/+18Indian food gives me massive amounts of methane, we should develop a way to utilize that
source of energy - BigW, on 12/15/2007, -4/+16I think you hit the nail on the head on this one. I bet if this report was about America getting at frozen methane, there be all kinds of posts about how its just horrible that America can't find cleaner fuels. Oh and there be tons of snipes at big oil too.
- inactive, on 12/15/2007, -0/+10It has to be asked again...Please provide ANY evidecne that the limiting factor for the current efficiency of solar energy is MONEY for research. It isn't. There is enough money for research. If you gave an inventor in the 1400's billions of dollars, he would not have made the light bulb.
- Terri84, on 12/15/2007, -2/+11You people are ***** stupid. America has wanted to do this for years but environmentalists block it. We have a ton of methane and natural gas on the west coast, a ***** TON of it. Learn before you open your stupid mouths.
- Aidanjalali, on 12/15/2007, -1/+9And if the methane manages to escape without being burned, it'll do 20 times more damage than CO2 emissions. We're screwed either way....stop the Earth, I want to get off.
- Devotia, on 12/15/2007, -2/+9-doesn't listen to masterm1nd-
Now if you'll excuse me, I've got to wire some money to this nice guy in Nigeria who's going to give me $4 million for helping me get his fortune into Switzerland. - dsendecki, on 12/15/2007, -0/+7If the ocean every gets that warm at that depth, we wont be around to care.
- inactive, on 12/15/2007, -3/+10The difference is that we didn't know what we were doing to the planet 50 years ago, when we built the framework for our modern economy. The Chinese know but they continue to spread their filth. Have you been to China? I have. The rivers and lakes are disgusting. The air in the cities is unbreathable. People still kill and eat critically endangered species because chinamen believe bear penis is an aphrodisiac. At least the US ostensibly holds itself to higher standards, even if we rarely achieve them. China doesn't care. The Chinese have ruined their natural environment and they won't think twice about ruining ours.
- MacEnvy, on 12/15/2007, -3/+9I really like the idea they mentioned on the second page about replacing the methane with frozen CO2, trapping 5 times as much carbon as they release when mining the methane. If they can make that work I'd be on board with the idea.
- inactive, on 12/15/2007, -7/+12Back when this country didn't suck, we could count on the CIA to ***** over any legitimate attempts at this kind of ***** and blame it on a giant squid. Oh well, time go to study Mandarin.
- rockchops, on 12/15/2007, -4/+9"We require additional Vespe^H^H^H^H Methane gas!"
- iNunchuk, on 12/15/2007, -0/+5With regards to project SUGAR, and how they plan on putting the carbon dioxide that they exchange with methane back into the ice...does that not seem uncannily familiar with how the ice in mars sort of exists?
/sci fi crazed reader. - thesonofdarwin, on 12/15/2007, -2/+6I'm going to reserve my spot as a gold farmer right now. Just sent the application.
- pinchduck, on 12/15/2007, -6/+10Those countries are going to surpass "The West"? Who the hell does Spiegel think is buying all their goods and services? They will become equal partners in a bountiful world economy. They write that as if any Western industrialized nation is about to turn into Zimbabwe. Whatever. It's about time that these countries that have been sucking up massive amounts of aid finally started to pull their own weight. Yeah, it sucks that if they start burning the methane they will accelerate global warming. On the other hand, the rich countries of the world, including the aforementioned countries, will have to pay for the solution.
- 3tcp, on 12/15/2007, -0/+4I don't think it'd be worth it to buy all the equipment just for a ton of methane, even if it was a ***** ton
- evodude, on 12/15/2007, -2/+6Two things:
1) Space bar. Use it.
2) Any environmentalist who isn't retarded will realize that mining methane is just as ***** stupid as burning oil. - carpespasm, on 12/16/2007, -0/+3yep, our 250million population is gonna take down china's 1billion population, which is decidedly leaning toward being male without many chicks around.
- boflaade, on 12/16/2007, -0/+3Well at least you didn't call them slant eyes or chinks. Your bigotry isn't that well hidden though.
- chedabob, on 12/15/2007, -2/+5What happens if it thaws though? As the Earth warms naturally, and global warming accelerates this process, sooner or later the gas is going to be released. Freezing the gas to create a problem for later generations is even more irresponsible than releasing carbon dioxide into the atmosphere as we are now.
- carlwfbird, on 12/16/2007, -0/+3Let's not forget the problems with methane in the atmosphere. Equal MW amounts of methane compared to CO2 can cause a warming effect5 - 10 times greater than CO2. This is one of the problems we have with CO2 emissions now b/c methane frozen in permafrost is being released as thousands of years of organic debris begin to be decomposed for the first time in years.
- masterm1nd, on 12/15/2007, -0/+3Ding ding ding. Congratulations, you are the one hundred millionth digger to make that politically motivated joke.
- 3tcp, on 12/15/2007, -1/+4God forbid their per capita GDP get within 20% of the US's (or in India's case, 10%)
- inactive, on 12/15/2007, -1/+4What's ironic is that idiots like you are part of reason they're surpassing us. While you were watching football and playing Mario Kart the Chinese kids were studying math and science. Now you sit in mom's basement and contribute nothing to the US economy while the chinamen become engineers and make products you can still afford on your minimum wage salary. Life's funny like that.
- mrowlinson, on 12/15/2007, -3/+6Last time I checked the West made up well over half of worldwide GDP... Not to mention Chinas GDP estimation was just revised downwards by more than 4 TRILLION dollars because the estimation was based on prices of goods in the 1980s, now it's based on 1990s prices, so who knows how accurate the new amount is. Grow at the present pace can't keep going at this pace for decades. The certainly is no shortage of chicken littles predicting the Wests demise...
- inactive, on 12/15/2007, -0/+3Yeah, because of all that Iraqi oil we have taken.
- l2OI3, on 12/15/2007, -1/+3Fact.
- ItsMyWii, on 12/15/2007, -5/+7I read the title and immediately thought "Uh oh, if they find it that's more bad news for the environment..." And it is. This isn't really a good thing.
- testcase, on 12/15/2007, -1/+3Two more things;
3) People who can't spell shouldn't be calling other people "ignorant asses".
4) Get your own ass out of the trailer park before you start telling other people what the deal is. - Acglaphotis, on 12/16/2007, -1/+3So frozen farts are a great source of energy?
- tackle, on 12/17/2007, -0/+2You fail to realize that there are other western nations than USA. When USA falls, it doesn't mean that the west has fallen. It will only be USA that has fallen. As USA gets deeper and deeper in the s**t hole, ther other western nations are actually going up the ladder. Sad, but true.
- masterm1nd, on 12/15/2007, -2/+4brass zombie, if you consume stuff, you are the problem. The big bad corporations give YOU what YOU want. Vote with your wallet or shut the ***** up.
- Sabretou, on 12/16/2007, -0/+2I'm Indian and I'm watching football and playing Mario Kart without contributing to the Indian economy. :(
- krnldmp, on 12/15/2007, -0/+2What are they going to do, burn it for entertainment?
- masterm1nd, on 12/15/2007, -0/+2Lol, it is quite a paradox.
- toyotaboy, on 12/18/2007, -0/+1henry rollins said it best "the president says everything is fine, I say start learning chinese"
- inactive, on 12/16/2007, -0/+1Nishay dugg you up because of great 21 12 2012 reference
- Raerth, on 12/16/2007, -0/+1What does Master-Blaster say?
- inactive, on 12/16/2007, -0/+1Hmm disagree w/you and be called retarded. Sure you're a moderate.
/It's not us - purag66, on 05/13/2009, -0/+1yup...lol
- siccmadeinc, on 12/16/2007, -0/+1The smart thing to do now would be to throw your next couple of pay checks into ETFs for some of these emerging markets.
- identifiedlogo, on 12/16/2007, -1/+2The Methane in Ice aka Natural gas Hydrate is the future energy source. it has a high energy density and it is clean burning. the only real problem is , methane is about 25 times more effective as a greenhouse gas than carbondioxide, that means every methane molecule has 25 the warming effect of carbondioxide. But the explained CO2 sequestration technique can work.
- hakluytbean, on 12/16/2007, -0/+1Gosh, methane....good thing, bad thing? Whatever, it makes for wholly excellent Siberian Fire Lakes: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Q7cu6Ip4MDs (BBC - Earth Power of the Planets)
- arjunt, on 12/16/2007, -0/+1That's bullsh*t. There is no difference. The United States has not ratified the Kyoto Protocol and China is exempted by it. That’s two of the world's largest emitters of Carbon dioxide.
- bobthebruce123, on 12/16/2007, -0/+1"Cohagen knows it makes air. But the bastard won't turn it on. Come on Cohagen! Give this people air!"
- streak, on 12/17/2007, -0/+1Massive amounts of methane on the ocean floor? That's one I know I didn't do.
- Farticus, on 12/17/2007, -0/+1Oh darn! They found out where I keep my stash.
- WikiEasy, on 12/16/2007, -1/+2The West still has them beat. Ever seen a 'Mexican'?
