- j0hn, on 07/13/2009, -9/+31I've always wondered when they will add gullible to the dictionary.
- kolobcreek, on 07/13/2009, -4/+23I still won't consider any dictionary credible until it contains the definition for "asshat"
- dafragsta, on 07/13/2009, -2/+19This seems like a publicity grab. It seems redundant if both carbon and footprint are defined. It's not even a joint compound word like "carbon footprint."
- suckmywake, on 07/13/2009, -3/+16Too bad "Carbon Footprint" isn't a word. It's a term. And Merriam-Webster's is an American English dictionary, hardly anything I would consider authoritative...
- AmnesiacJack, on 07/13/2009, -3/+15The only nation? Bit of a stretch isn't it?
China? India? Ghana? Taiwan? - saintsfan, on 07/13/2009, -1/+13well that settles it, it is in the dictionary.
- LoneStarLizard, on 07/13/2009, -3/+13Oh yeah, also, buried for huffington post.
- leahpee, on 07/13/2009, -0/+9Carbon footprint is TWO words.
Look them up separately. - inactive, on 07/13/2009, -1/+10Urban Dictionary had it over a year ago.
- LoneStarLizard, on 07/13/2009, -1/+9I think the new name is "Climate Chaos." By being less specific, you broaden the number of things that can be attributed to it. It also has the added benefit of sounding much more alarmist as well.
- saintsfan, on 07/13/2009, -2/+10Well what is a carbon footprint? It used to cause global warming, now it is causing climate change? So it can heat up and cool down the Earth?
- kreatre2007, on 07/13/2009, -8/+14The definition should be: buzzword used in the manmade global warming hoax.
- saintsfan, on 07/13/2009, -1/+6The definition they give is stupid. The negative IMPACT that something has on the environment; specifically: the amount of carbon emitted by something during a given period. That suggests that the amount of carbon is the negative impact rather than the cause for the negative impact which is what they meant to say. The definition they should have given is the amount of carbon emitted by an entity.
- theonlywizdum, on 07/13/2009, -0/+5Like the argument school children use after being told that "ain't" isn't a word.
- Nidy1, on 07/13/2009, -2/+7Damn it, I fell for it and looked...and it wasn't in there on www.webster.com. Wtf?
- dafragsta, on 07/13/2009, -1/+6err... "footprint" dammit.
- Bagos1, on 07/13/2009, -2/+6I wonder if some day it will be updated and call it a conerstone term used in one of the greates scams ever to generate income from carbon.
- Bagos1, on 07/13/2009, -0/+3So true, so true...
- theonlywizdum, on 07/13/2009, -3/+6Once we're proven right, and "global cooling", or "global mediocrity" becomes the newest scare.
- martage, on 07/13/2009, -4/+7On a related note, I'm sure Merriam-Webster leaves their fair share of a carbon footprint every time they print off copies of their latest dictionary.
- saintsfan, on 07/13/2009, -1/+4Can't argue if it is in the dictionary it is fact.
- anthropodeus, on 07/13/2009, -2/+5@ Bagos1
where there's a government, there's a way. - kolobcreek, on 07/13/2009, -1/+4@AmnesiacJack Shouldn't we count China twice?
- LoneStarLizard, on 07/13/2009, -1/+4Czech Republic?
- crossmr, on 07/13/2009, -1/+3This is just further proof that companies like Merriam Webster are irrelevant to the language. All these buzzwords/slang/etc have no place in a dictionary. There is, frankly, too much slang to keep track of. slang varies so much from region to region that the amount of it eclipses the actual language to begin with. Every year we get some articles about these words being added to the dictionary as some form of validation of the term but all it is is dictionary makers trying to show their product has some use. All they're really doing is embarrassing themselves.
- zeth006, on 07/13/2009, -3/+5Dunno why ngresonance is getting dugg down.
India and China ESPECIALLY have much to gain by maintaining the status quo in their countries. Though they are in denial and most likely have their own scientists confirming the rise of greenhouse gas emissions from their own countries, it would be difficult for them to impose costly emission caps while they're still industrializing. - geoffg, on 07/13/2009, -22/+24They should add the word "libtard" as in a retarded hominid who believes in anthropogenic global warming...er rather global climate change...or whatever we're calling this nonsense today.
- Richandler, on 07/13/2009, -3/+5Yes how many will make their commitment? Well, not so evident.
- crossmr, on 07/13/2009, -0/+2you might want to do a modicum of research before you make idiotic claims. I'm surrounded by Koreans everyday who are learning english as a second language and teaching it to a good number of them. Slang and idioms are a nightmare for them. They're extremely numerous and there is no good way to pick and choose which ones they should learn. Pop slang changes daily, and who knows in 6 months if anyone is going to care about it. What Merriam Webster is doing is latching on to a buzzword to try and make themselves relevant. Carbon footprint isn't a word, so we can start with that. It is also relatively new. There is no evidence to suggest that in 5 or 10 years this term will even be relevant. I remember the first year I read these when they added "Bootylicious" to the dictionary, along with some slang from the 50s that was still being used. Bootylicious? Well I haven't really heard that much of it since the song left the charts. But hey at least it got into the dictionary. This is the equivalent of MLB inducting someone into the hall of fame after his first at bat, because he got a hit and now he's batting 1.000
If slang is 40 or 50 years old and still being used. Its legitimate vocabulary. Some buzzword that is here one year and gone the next isn't. - Sveglio, on 07/13/2009, -0/+2Το 'geoffg': You seem to be assertively opposed to the global warming scenario. How are you so convinced? There’s some evidence that needs to be examined; don’t be dogmatic.
- kolobcreek, on 07/13/2009, -4/+6or the amount of co2 contributed to healthy growth of vegetation around the world
- tgc1, on 07/13/2009, -1/+3Damn now I can't allow my rational thoughts to question this as an agenda to remove more money from our wallets. Dammit.
- anthropodeus, on 07/13/2009, -1/+3global cooling would actually be a much bigger problem than global warming. can you imagine glaciers slowly destroying canada, europe, and russia? we may actually be doing ourselves a favor by releasing CO2 and preventing an ice age.
- Atario, on 07/13/2009, -1/+3"And Merriam-Webster's is an American English dictionary, hardly anything I would consider authoritative..."
...he muttered, sniffing, as he stirred his Earl Grey. - theonlywizdum, on 07/13/2009, -0/+2How much does it cost to buy that many domains? You can't possibly be making any money.
- anthropodeus, on 07/13/2009, -0/+2not dictionary. wikipedia.
- suzanek, on 07/13/2009, -0/+2what is asshat????
- inactive, on 07/13/2009, -0/+2Yeah, suck it denialists! You tell 'em, Farth!

http://tiny.cc/P3Yw2 - kolobcreek, on 07/13/2009, -0/+2so will denying the fact that the "sun is a mass of incandescent gas, a gigantic nuclear furnace where hydrogen is turned into helium at millions of degrees" with no thermostat.
You want to make an impact on the planet stop the pollution of the oceans. - saintsfan, on 07/13/2009, -0/+1anybody in the world can put anything they want in wikipedia so you know your getting the best possible information
- inactive, on 07/13/2009, -0/+1This is retarded.
Climate changes and the world stays in equilibrium. Who cares about carbon footprints? - uberduger, on 07/13/2009, -0/+1It was in the song 'You Only Get What You Give' by the New Radicals way back in ~1998, and Michael Ausiello uses it all the time. I can find you more usages if you want!
Love that word. - inactive, on 07/13/2009, -1/+2Not that the whole idea of a dictionary being more authoritative isn't kinda asinine. Are you really getting a much better appreciation for the English language from The Oxford English Dictionary than you would from Merriam-Webster? Do you imagine the words pronounced with a British accent or something?
- emjaymj, on 07/13/2009, -0/+1If you're trying to get people to click legitimate links, using a tiny URL service is just going to make people not trust the links...
- frepnog, on 07/13/2009, -0/+1so... can you use it in scrabble as one word?
- inactive, on 07/13/2009, -1/+2Or....
...I could just wait for someone like you to comment on them and verify their legitimacy. - KahRahTay, on 07/13/2009, -0/+1Asshat: One whose head is so far up their ass it could pass for a hat. see: climate denialist

That's good dude.
