- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Forestry is a field spoiling for disaster. For instance the trees replanted after clear cutting aren't grown from seed any more, they're cloned (via a process called meristem propagation) from particularly tall, straight, fast-growing and branch-free trees. One'd think that having entire forests of millions of genetically identical trees is an obviously bad idea, but apparently it isn't as obvious as one'd think, because this is already reality.
As for these terminator trees, they still produce pollen - meaning they depress the seed production of non-terminator conspecific trees around them, and also field tests suggest their infertility isn't 100%, meaning that the transgene genes will eventually transfer to the wild population. - rhettnyedotorg, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1BOOO Canada.
