- RogerStrong, on 12/18/2007, -17/+182These aren't cars; they're golf carts with turn signals.
Here in Winnipeg you can't get around town without travelling on 60kph streets. The Zenn only goes 40kph / 25mph - they'd tie up traffic.
Nor do they have the safety requirements of cars. No crash testing, no crash protection - making them death-traps in normal traffic. - satanatnmtedu, on 12/18/2007, -24/+127How many places is 30 mph (48 km/hr) a viable top speed? It seems that this car would be rather impractical.

We Do... We Doooo! - CannedMango, on 12/18/2007, -5/+43As a Canadian, I feel that there is a *very* important point to mention here:
This story was reported on by the National television channel (the CBC), which is funded by the government of Canada. Would you see that in the US? - slapshottttttt, on 12/18/2007, -14/+42Its unfortunate that the Green Party spends 90% of its time on drafting effective rhetoric and 5% on researching the statementst they make.
The other 5% of their time is presumably spent smoking hemp products of some kind... - spyd3rweb, on 12/18/2007, -5/+30Last I looked batteries perform really poorly in freezing cold weather.
- zyl0x, on 12/18/2007, -5/+26Let me know when we're going to march on parliament for this one.
Oh wait, no one actually cares enough to do anything about stuff like this. - bogatash, on 12/18/2007, -13/+33Let ruin the environment so people don't think we're gay.
- cramd, on 12/18/2007, -7/+27This would be fine in an urban setting. In cities like Vancouver, where there is a very high number of people that live in our downtown core, these cars would be great for getting around to do some shopping, or on a rainy day when the scooter is just not fun. I don't feel these were designed to be commuter vehicles.
- LogicBomB, on 12/18/2007, -2/+22Umm... in Ottawa, Ontario many regularly travelled, non-highway streets are 50-80 km/h. And to be honest I wouldn't drive in anything that did less than a buck twenty.
- d3dm, on 12/18/2007, -4/+23These cars will become acceptable as soon as Canada converts all of their streets into fairways.
- loki49152, on 12/18/2007, -6/+24Who killed the electric car?
1. Physics
2. Chemistry
3. Economics - moghua, on 12/18/2007, -0/+15I believe they impose that limit specifically so that the car can be legally sold as a "neighborhood electric" ( http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Neighborhood_electric ... ) I would imagine that after you get it home, you pull the "undocumented" fuse somewhere to disable the limiter.
- tankedsender, on 12/18/2007, -3/+18From Zenn's website: http://zenncars.com/
1. Is the ZENN legal for sale in Canada?
On Friday, November 2, 2007, Transport Canada granted ZENN Motor Company use of the National Safety Mark. The National Safety Mark is a requirement for any vehicle sold in Canada and confirms that any vehicle bearing this mark meets or exceeds the standards set forth by Transport Canada.
The issuance of the National Safety Mark is the first step of many to bringing the ZENN to market in Canada. Of the ten provinces and 3 territories, only British Columbia currently has low-speed vehicle regulation in place. ZENN Motor Company will begin engaging the provinces to immediately draft low-speed vehicle legislation and do their part to provide consumers with a vehicle choice that drastically reduces their carbon footprint and contributes to a much more sustainable way of living.
Any progress on entering the Canadian marketplace will be posted to our website. Please continue to check for updates on www.ZENNcars.com. - bogatash, on 12/18/2007, -5/+18In every city in the world. Is that a good enough answer?
- buckrogers1965, on 12/18/2007, -6/+19Most humans don't define their sexuality by their vehicle. Only men with tiny dicks do that.
- RogerStrong, on 12/18/2007, -0/+12The same with people who think that this has anything to do with Harper.
- spiralspirit, on 12/18/2007, -0/+12Electric production at power plants is far more efficient than the combustion engines in cars.
This kind of thing wont take over in one night - there will be time and incentive to upgrade the infrastructure. - Stromatolite, on 12/18/2007, -5/+17The ZENN isn't designed to replace an internal combustion engine vehicle on long trips. It's designed to get around town for shorter trips. Think running to the grocery store or picking up kids from school. Here's a review of the car, which is considered a "Neighborhood Electric Vehicle": http://lincolnev.com/zenn.html
- inactive, on 12/18/2007, -3/+14The Green Party isn't full of potheads. It's full of PC Party rejects. The high school students who support the Green Party are the ones who smoke pot all day... "Man, the environment is *****, man. We should totally, like, do something."
- Russkull, on 12/18/2007, -3/+13this is not aboot canada being funny, it is aboot respect, and flapping heads, and being a canadian i resent that, you are a racist.
- inactive, on 12/18/2007, -0/+10We can build to compensate for the grid surge. It's still better to have one massive power plant working at peak efficiency than to have millions of poorly maintained little internal combustion engines all over the place.
- dustinmacdonald, on 12/18/2007, -4/+13If it can't go 60km/h I don't want to even hear about it.
- Chineyz, on 12/18/2007, -1/+10Its from the simpsons.. Funny episode... Nice placement.
- RogerStrong, on 12/18/2007, -4/+13I live in downtown Winnipeg. The main routes are mostly 60kph, far over the Zenn's 40kph maximum speed. With our rivers and railroads, you can't get around without travelling on a main route.
- Narcism, on 12/18/2007, -4/+1340kph? Does it come with an itty bitty 60 year old asian chauffeur?
- orehitna, on 12/18/2007, -5/+13whether or not these cars can at this point in time keep up with traffic is irrelevant in the 'grand' scheme. think of it this way, sure it's impractical to have a car's top speed of 40Km, however, if the company behind this / these cars are shut down, the opportunity for one that can do upwards of 60 or 80 km/h that isn't a bandwagonning not-really-all-that-eco-friendly hybrid or isn't produced by a large car company is dwindling.
the government of any country, let alone our own (speaking as a canadian, obviously) should never be preventing innovation. - RogerStrong, on 12/18/2007, -4/+12According to the news, the top speed is 25 mph (40 km/hr).
- Butros, on 12/18/2007, -2/+10almost dugg you down before realizing 120 km/h is like 75 mph...
- gothsquirrel, on 12/18/2007, -1/+9If you can get up to 25mph in Philadelphia with all the stop signs and light your lucky so it would deffinatly work here.
- Bigflexy, on 12/18/2007, -0/+8The Electric Car - The car that would solve Ontario's alleged speeding problem...
- Russkull, on 12/18/2007, -2/+10regarding speed, this vehicle would be perfectly suitable for my daily commute which is in Edmonton Alberta, mostly stop go traffic anyway.
- Heni905, on 12/18/2007, -2/+10is it tested in 3feet of snow? what about -40windchill?? im pretty sure the snow plows would bury these things..
- RogerStrong, on 12/18/2007, -1/+9Sure. A bicycle can be a very intelligent choice or a very stupid one depending on where you drive it.
- UncleCrapper, on 12/18/2007, -0/+8IN OTHER WORDS, as of November 2, 2007, ZENN is now legal for sale in Canada. The remaining road block is that low speed vehicles are only legal in one province at the moment, British Columbia. The web site goes on to mention that ZENN anticipates that their product will be on the market in BC by spring of 2008, and conditionally in other provinces as low speed vehicle regulations develop.
- smacksaw, on 12/18/2007, -1/+8When I noticed the link was from the Green Party I was like "Oh they're going to blame Americans" but what was worse is that there was nothing in the actual video about it.
Living in Vancouver I have a specific complaints about these LSVs, and unlike the Greens I am going to substantiate my claim and answer you. First off, it's an impractical speed. On many of the roads in Downtown it's too slow and it's a hazard. So do you know where these people drive when they can't keep up? You guessed it, the bicycle lanes. Same thing goes for scooters - people want to get rid of those as well.
These things are a hazard to cyclists and cycling is HUGE in Vancouver. It's hard enough for bikes and cars to get along, adding in these things to the mix is not good enough. If they could go faster I don't think it would be a problem, but the thing about LSVs and Transport Canada seems a bit of a lie of omission to me in that they don't explain why they are revising their rules.
I would bet you a shiny new Loonie that the Transport Canada rules are for GOLF CARTS and have been broadly interpreted for these sorts of vehicles. If they could up the speed they could fix this. In summary, ***** the Greens for their potshot at the US. - farther, on 12/18/2007, -0/+7You see, in Canada, we like to pretend that we have a little thing we call "democracy".
The reality is that we simply vote for the party we least hate - Liberal, Convervative, New Democrats, Green, Communist: they're all rather useless. - dvandewalle, on 12/18/2007, -2/+9no, south park is funny, but the important thing to remember is it's the thinking man's funny, unlike family guy, that is frat-boy funny. take "blame Canada" funny song, since it is making fun of American ignorance masked as making fun of canada. American's don't get it, but us Canadians think it's funny, especially when we talk to a "huhhuh blame Canada, they take dog sleds to work" idiot.
- cramd, on 12/18/2007, -2/+9Dude you just have no idea how fun they are. I am come from a long background with motorcycles, I raced motorcross for years. Last week I picked up a scooter for little runs (up to the village for a coffee, out to grab a quite bite to eat...) and it is a BLAST. The other night I ran in to several guys on pocket bikes, who had setup a track in a parking lot. Well it was time to show them what the scooter could do. I was leaning it right over @60KM and loving it.
- ceredon, on 12/18/2007, -0/+6Why? Are you feeling lonely?
Get a clue. Obviously, the success or failure of these cars has little to do with anything Harper has or hasn't done. But, that shouldn't matter to you. - autorock, on 12/18/2007, -2/+8Bicycles can't go this fast, yet are definitely part of the solution. What's truly impractical is oil addiction. People are going to have to start changing their ways of thinking about what is "practical". Once gas is $10 per gallon, I think you'll see a lot of new ideas about what is a reasonable speed for a commuter vehicle.
- mos6507, on 12/18/2007, -0/+6And these things use lead-acid.
- inactive, on 12/18/2007, -1/+7Uh, no, it really wouldn't be when the MINIMUM useful speed is 50Km/h and you really need to be capable of more than that.
If you need something with great fuel economy, buy a Smart car. If you just want something with a zero carbon footprint, buy an electric scooter. - dvandewalle, on 12/18/2007, -1/+6maybe for driving through school zones, but last i checked my speed limits start at 50km/h in the city and are usually around 60km/h on surface streets, and closer to 80km/h on the highway i use to get to work. i am all for saving the planet, but face it, this is a niche product for a niche audience. the day they make an electric (or hell, even hybrid) that can be driven on the highway, works in the snow and doesn't freeze in a Manitoba winter, i'll be first in line.
- ryansmith18, on 12/18/2007, -0/+5Pfft...my full size truck can run over your large dick.
....I'm thinking bumper stickers.... - Inamint, on 12/18/2007, -4/+9Obviously someone is not a fan of the simpsons. Oh well, your loss.
- bearda, on 12/18/2007, -0/+5Depends on the battery technology. Lead-acid is piss poor. Others fair better.
- RogerStrong, on 12/18/2007, -0/+5No in Canada. Where I am (Manitoba) it's pretty much all hydo-electric, with more winds power being developed. Elsewhere its nuclear.
Yes there's some coal being used, but not as much as you think. - SilverBlade2k, on 12/18/2007, -11/+16I'm all for electric vehicles and wanting to get off of oil...BUT....a top speed of ONLY 40km/hr? No thanks. Here in Winnipeg, all roads are 50km/hr and more....60km/hr is more common...this car would be too slow.
