- rjinso, on 11/12/2008, -4/+95Sounds like the real problem is the ridiculous ride-sharing laws.
- fmohr, on 11/12/2008, -3/+60Are those ride-sharing laws a joke?
- inactive, on 11/12/2008, -4/+58Cry me a freakin' river Trentway - Wagar. Another one of "big money interests" shining through.
- inactive, on 11/12/2008, -2/+48QQFQC? Q'est-ce que ***** que c'est?
- jerryjamesstone, on 11/12/2008, -9/+55Yes, we wouldn't want to have evil things like carpooling around...
- hbyrne, on 11/12/2008, -1/+44Fascinating. Time to update a few laws.
- aethelberga, on 11/13/2008, -3/+44Sounds like the real problem is a cranky bus company trying to take advantage of antiquated ride sharing laws to bully a smaller competitor.
- lockr, on 11/13/2008, -0/+41In fairness, apparently the government has introduced legislation to legalize this kind of thing:
http://www.thestar.com/News/Ontario/article/526516 - RogerStrong, on 11/13/2008, -8/+44This was NOT about you and your friends and coworkers carpooling.
This was about anyone with a van using it as a “public vehicle” to sell rides to complete strangers. In other words to set up a transit/taxi BUSINESS - without being licensed, insured, and having to comply with the safety regulations of a taxi/transit business.
Buried as innaccurate. - Sambora, on 11/13/2008, -5/+39Buried for inaccuracy. Canada does not equal a province, and there was no mention of which province -- not to mention that this article's title is completely misleading and should have [citation needed] written all over it. Seriously, "Canada Has Spent Billions On Carpool Lanes, But The Courts Are Now Forbidding Their Use By An Online Ridesharing Website" -- how is this issue forbidding carpool lane use? Sensationalist hippie garbage. Thumbs down to you good sir!
- samotage, on 11/13/2008, -1/+30That is the most unbelievably remarkable thing I've seen in a very long time... Arcane carpooling laws are actually in effect formed almost 40 years ago? And here is a busco getting their underwear all in a knot about it...
* You must travel from home to work only - nowhere else!
* You cannot cross municipal boundaries
* You must ride with the same driver each day
* You must pay the driver no more frequently than weekly
Surely they can't be serious? - PeppermintPig, on 11/12/2008, -13/+41Fascism is fun!
- phybere, on 11/13/2008, -1/+21They are. And don't call them Shirly.
- FredSpeaking, on 11/13/2008, -1/+21The title is in accurate. _Ontario_ fined the company, not Canada.
- MorganMghee, on 11/12/2008, -7/+27Politics and big money in action. How exactly is this 'free market' supposed to work again? I'm confused... Regardless, if we are ever going to make any headway in cleaning up our environment, everyone is going to need to get on board. That includes the owners of transportation companies, the judges making rulings, and the people being transported.
- pdmcleod, on 11/13/2008, -0/+17It's an appeal waiting to happen. But where the hell are these laws anyway? The article keeps referring to "the province" but doesn't say which one. The Digg article and site keep referring to to it as Canada when they're clearly not nationwide rules.
- hopefuel, on 11/13/2008, -4/+21What's next Craigslist being sued by every retailer/service provider ever?
Oh, Canada.....(note the difference in emphasis) - duggdowncatisad, on 11/13/2008, -1/+16Who cares? They'll never stop us from sharing rides on Pirate Bay.
- NathanielJ, on 11/13/2008, -0/+13You apparently didn't do too well in French either.
- SilverBlade2k, on 11/13/2008, -0/+12It's a lot better then how the U.S was under the Bush government..
- inactive, on 11/12/2008, -0/+12:) very nice cake. I've never heard it said so eloquently.
- jerryjamesstone, on 11/13/2008, -1/+11LOL.
- TSK05, on 11/13/2008, -2/+12It feels good to say that again.
- NathanielJ, on 11/13/2008, -0/+10Yeah, and that level of french is about as eloquent as what you would get from Google Translate.
yellowcakewalk's is better. - Sonizel, on 11/13/2008, -2/+12k it's not that bad
- a1cd, on 11/13/2008, -4/+14Canada has a lot of problems with these large companies/unions pushing their weight around and cutting out us normal people in way of profits.. the goverment hardly ever steps in to help up (see rogers, bill c52 etc)
In the last few months I have had to deal with 2 different transit strikes (thankfully not at the same time), and now because of a T.A strike my university has been closed and will likely remain closed for weeks and pretty much get my semester discredited .. - - - glennkachmar, on 11/13/2008, -2/+11Bureaucracy is the epoxy which lubricates the wheels of progress! Sadly, Canada has as much bureaucracy as any country.
- mrcpu, on 11/13/2008, -0/+8In all fairness, the problem with the law in Ontario is being fixed by this bill:
http://www.ontla.on.ca/web/bills/bills_detail.do?l ...
The definitions of "public vehicle" and "taxicab" in the Act currently exclude a car pool vehicle. These definitions are amended and the definition of "car pool vehicle" is repealed. Section 1 of the Act is amended to state that a public vehicle and a taxicab do not include a motor vehicle described as follows: with a seating capacity of 10 or less; travelling on a one-way or round trip where the taking of passengers is incidental to the driver's purpose for the trip; no fee is charged or paid for passengers' transportation except to reimburse the expenses of operating the motor vehicle; the driver does not take passengers on more than one one-way or round trip in a day; and the owner or lessee of the motor vehicle does not use more than one vehicle as a car pool vehicle, unless the owner or lessee employs most of the passengers being transported in the vehicles. - a1cd, on 11/13/2008, -0/+8Toronto actually has some of the highest fares in North America for major citys, (the highest IIRC) $2.75 one way, cant use transfer back. I live in a suburb about 20min away from toronto and my fare is $3.25
- naturalpapa, on 11/13/2008, -1/+9When in the Great White North, better take the bus, eh?
- MrSquirrel, on 11/13/2008, -2/+10Is it possible that such ridiculous laws were originally lobbied for by the bigger transit companies in the first place?
- tjex, on 11/13/2008, -0/+7To be fair, it's only in Ontario, not all of Canada
- Sisko41, on 11/13/2008, -3/+10and Americans are overweight red necks :)
- crossmr, on 11/13/2008, -1/+8I got bit by a quebecor once.. I'm still taking antibiotics..
- inactive, on 11/13/2008, -1/+8Haven't you seen the PSA? If someone wants to carpool with you, he's probably a homosexual. Keep your distances.
- inactive, on 11/13/2008, -2/+8its a lie
- walshgopher, on 11/13/2008, -1/+7Thats the kettle calling the pot black.
- Sisko41, on 11/13/2008, -0/+6everyone is moving to Saskatchewan now dude. Alberta is played out.
- zacharytelschow, on 11/13/2008, -0/+6Canada still cool.
- samukalra, on 11/13/2008, -0/+6And once you pass a certain point in Toronto, you have to transfer to a different bus (a completely different company) and pay another fare.
In total, it costs about 5.75 for me to get home each day.
So...
***** THE TTC
***** THE YRT - chaoswings, on 11/13/2008, -0/+6I'm sorry but we Canadians can't have a comeback for that one. No matter what Canadians say, all an American needs to respond with is "Oh yeah? We had Bush....*sound of crickets*"
- Sornos, on 11/13/2008, -4/+10No one will listen as it is a much more interesting to think of it as a confirmation of believes that the government is always wrong.
- SpaceForRent, on 11/13/2008, -0/+6Worst part... 3 pages before the article in the Toronto Star, was another one where carpooling was encouraged by the PM as a method of saving the environment.
(We have ALWAYS been at war with Oceania)
What's next, Holiday Inn suing me for letting a friend crash on my couch? - inactive, on 11/13/2008, -14/+20God dammit Canada, stop making yourselves look bad!
-America - Logicexe, on 11/13/2008, -0/+5With grammar like that you better be from Quebec.
- nescalona, on 11/13/2008, -4/+9The real problem here is the ridiculous labor and environmental laws in place, even more so than the ridiculous ride-sharing laws.
- Wheemer, on 11/13/2008, -0/+5Thanks for help keep our image good!
- Kerrigore, on 11/13/2008, -0/+5They probably thought the article was just calling us provincials. To most Americans, "Canada" is one place.
- walshgopher, on 11/13/2008, -1/+6We aren't nearly as bad as Americans...I mean the worst we get is Quebec and their bark is way worse than their bite...
- RogerStrong, on 11/13/2008, -1/+6@ChonoonFiend:
Are you saying that there should not be any safety and insurance regulations at all? Or only when you put a corporate logo on the side of your vehicle? -
