- padraic2112, on 11/17/2008, -0/+23Heck, biking will save me $400+ in parking fees alone...
- SteveMTyler, on 11/18/2008, -0/+15they need better secuirty at the bike racks. They need a bait-bike program, and they need to be aggressive.
(this is at Vancouver, but it is probably applicable to all college towns.) - Sornos, on 11/18/2008, -0/+13Why isn't this at my college?
- reyoo30309, on 11/17/2008, -0/+12What?! Colleges paying students? The world really is ending...
- imasuperDOTcom, on 11/17/2008, -2/+13Thanks to the bail-out program, Bikers can also deduct $20 a month from their taxable income!

Let's Gooooooooo Green! - volcom88, on 11/18/2008, -0/+5UC Irvine won't even allow people to ride bicycles on most of the campus. WEAK.
- Kinsbane, on 11/17/2008, -0/+5Try getting a UCLA student to bike through the Sepulveda Pass from the Valley.
- GarrettGrimsley, on 11/18/2008, -0/+4I completely agree ratles, why worry about something that affects all of us and instead pour money into defense! END SOCIAL PROGRAMS, EXPAND DEFENSE SPENDING!
- thechosen, on 11/18/2008, -1/+5You'd think we'd have something like that over here at Berkeley...considering it's tree hugger central.
- trogdorBURN, on 11/18/2008, -0/+3great find.
- GarrettGrimsley, on 11/18/2008, -0/+3I'd say it has a tiny bit to do with excessive defense spending, but mostly this.
- BristolMyLove, on 12/21/2008, -0/+3The only time I've ever used the LA bus (in recent memory) was one time during the summer going over the Sepulvada pass. It's really fast and you can just stick your bike on the bus... it was actually kind of nice. No sitting behind the wheel in the traffic that's always there.

We do. It's called the Green Bike Share. It's still in its infancy, but it's definitely happening. - galeninjapan, on 11/18/2008, -0/+2I wonder where that money is coming from.
- orangester, on 11/18/2008, -0/+2I'd prefer this much more over my current method of donating plasma.
It's impossible to get a job now, instead there are people being let go.
On top of that I'm going to have a great time trying to get more student loans thanks to our wonderful economic situation.
I'd love to thank the generations before me for ensuring that not only is it extremely hard to afford a higher education now, but if I can afford to finish college the job market will be a horrendous *****. - GarrettGrimsley, on 11/18/2008, -0/+2A good u-lock would probably do fine, unless there are people running around with jaws of life, or maybe blow torches.
Cable locks are worthless, I've have a bike stolen from in front of a busy mall that was on a cable lock.
My trusty u-lock? No problems yet.
That said, bike trees are awesome.

Video related. - Barackalypse, on 11/18/2008, -0/+2I wonder what the money is being taken away from. Oh, that's right, education, which explains why so many kids have zero critical thinking skills, because some Universities have long ago dumped their commitment to education in favor of advancing social and political agendas.
- cddict1, on 11/18/2008, -0/+2is there any vacant seat? i am coming for admission.
- GarrettGrimsley, on 11/18/2008, -0/+2I've seen bike racks that were bolted together and not used 'em. Welded or bust.
- Grok22, on 11/18/2008, -0/+2crazy. although i did almost hit 3 different people today biking to class, In my defense it was snowing and the people stepped out in front of me.
- Derelict267, on 11/18/2008, -0/+2Cal state fullerton just passed a new rule this semester; no bikes or skateboards on campus =/
- samotage, on 11/17/2008, -0/+2What a great idea!
- Styvo, on 11/18/2008, -0/+2I believe the number you were looking for is trillion? BTW its like 10.6 trillion.
http://www.brillig.com/debt_clock/ - newbyx86, on 11/18/2008, -0/+2Uh, I attend UC Davis. If you have a car here, odds are is that you use your bike more often. Freshmen can't even have cars their first year. And if you don't have a bike, you're SOL; better leave for class early or you won't make it in time.
Just make cities (and college campuses in general) more bike friendly. - antonio97b, on 11/18/2008, -0/+2My response.

No, not a U-Lock. The point is though that most people are reluctant to do anything. I actually had a bike stolen with a U lock. They just cut through the frame. My guess is the welded it back up and had a free bike. - statuescrumble, on 11/18/2008, -0/+2Im applying this year, wish me luck.
- inactive, on 11/18/2008, -1/+2SUV sucks.
- kolinkoolface2, on 11/18/2008, -0/+1thank you, i am not that stupid....
- GarrettGrimsley, on 11/18/2008, -0/+1He might mean state debt? I gave him the benefit of the doubt and didn't look it up.
- Derelict267, on 11/18/2008, -0/+1You sure? I read in the newspaper it was bikes and skateboards...
- Ghoztt, on 11/18/2008, -0/+1PUBLIC bike security needs to be boosted everywhere. Including rights to safe keeping at your place of employment & school. Until then, people become more honest, or standards of living become high enough for the elimination of crime - a large scale green movement towards biking to (X) IS NOT GOING TO HAPPEN.
Oh, and the economy could crash and everyone is FORCED to.
Always a scenario to consider. - BristolMyLove, on 12/21/2008, -0/+1They encourage it but look at the ground... It's spray painted in some places like near the tunnel that goes under Broadway to The Hill.
- agentzero141970, on 11/18/2008, -0/+1And us in San Diego State we get jack *****,............... except all the girls and parties=)
- hisean99, on 11/18/2008, -0/+1WTF, that's not even true. CU has bike lanes all across campus and they rent out bikes on campus. They encourage both biking and skateboarding on campus.
- WhatPeriod, on 11/18/2008, -0/+1And if by year-round near perfect weather, you mean my house burning down, then yes, there is near perfect weather.
- machocheese34, on 11/18/2008, -0/+1they allow bikes
- Barackalypse, on 11/18/2008, -0/+1How does this fit in with all the air quality initiatives like "Ozone Action Days" where air pollution (particulates, ozone, etc) levels are so high they advise against physical activity outside? For instance, Nov 18-19th vast swathes of California are listed as "Unhealthy for Sensitive Groups" and one of the groups that applies to are "people who are active outdoors"
http://airnow.gov/ - trogdorBURN, on 11/18/2008, -0/+1frickin a tell me about it....lost a $500 marin due to theft...
- nickbr00tality, on 11/18/2008, -0/+1What he said. I just walk to class though...I really don't want to carry my bike up stairs to get to some buildings...
- NotYourProdigy, on 11/18/2008, -0/+1What the ***** Colorado. I'm tired of always waiting for California to start the trends.
- blankb, on 11/18/2008, -0/+1Your Just Mad Because Your Not Gonna Get Paid
- sp89, on 11/18/2008, -0/+1My school (Cal State Long Beach) has carpooling lots that are closer to the classes and other important locations. I'm not sure if other schools have them but it is a way to encourage carpooling.
- doobiebrother, on 11/18/2008, -0/+1Wait, according to the article, only one Calif. school actually pays students (Stanford)?
- blankb, on 11/18/2008, -0/+1Shhhh
- thechosen, on 11/18/2008, -0/+1Oh yeah, I saw them tabling a while ago. It's a very interesting idea, but it's more about providing bikes isn't it? This article is about rewarding those who already bike.
Good idea though. - blankb, on 11/18/2008, -0/+1 I Stopped Job Hunting Until Today Just Because Of This Article
- BristolMyLove, on 12/21/2008, -0/+1University of Colorado has no biking and skateboarding painted all over the ground-- yet bike racks are everywhere and tons of people bike around campus. I tried once and it's somewhat hazardous when you're at a school of 28,000 people. Walking is easier.
- digg87, on 11/18/2008, -0/+1So did Cal Poly Pomona
