- radicaldementia, on 09/29/2009, -7/+162In controlled environments, very high concentrations of CO2 are beneficial to plants and it's a common practice to pump extra CO2 into greenhouses. Raising greenhouse CO2 concentrations to 1000ppm (which is far higher than any predicted atmospheric levels) increases plant growth by up to 50% in some species.
However in the wild, where water and other nutrients are not limitless, studies have shown that most plants will not benefit from extra CO2, and many will actually become less productive. CO2 is only one necessary component of photosynthesis, and without enough sunlight and water the carbon fixation process is capped. Also, plants "breathe" CO2, but it's what they "eat" that makes them nutritious for animals. Plus, this obviously ignores all of the other effects of increased CO2 which can (in certain regions) make the environment less hospitable overall. - Aminus, on 09/29/2009, -17/+144More good news: new studies reveal investing in bold-faced lies is good for your shriveled, blackened heart!
- sulthernao, on 09/30/2009, -5/+112H20 is good for you also. However, too much of it causes drowning.
- PlasticHotDog, on 09/29/2009, -17/+107What the *****? These people have no shame.
- stephhicks68, on 09/29/2009, -13/+101Must be the same ad agency that prepared the "clean coal" spots.
- nahsrocketeer75, on 09/29/2009, -16/+77Special place in hell will have elevated levels of CO2.
- chris8535, on 09/30/2009, -6/+53whats H-Twenty?
- digitalArtform, on 09/30/2009, -4/+42People need O2
Try scuba diving with pure O2, or see what happens at 2 atmospheres partial pressure. It's toxic. - byakkun, on 09/29/2009, -12/+41Maybe we will all go to hell. Do we really have to bring hell to this planet to "save jobs", and conserve the "healthy" consumer habits in the mighty capitalism?
- jerryjamesstone, on 09/29/2009, -9/+37Um, no one says 'What the *****' anymore...please use the Internet-approved WTF :-)
- zachstanley, on 09/30/2009, -1/+28Why, an impossibly large dideca-atomic hydrogen molecule, of course!
- Dregganaut, on 09/30/2009, -5/+30that's carbon monoxide though
- DigitalisAkujin, on 09/30/2009, -11/+35Can we stick these people in a room with pure CO2? I bet they'll turn green....
- MaxxusFlamus, on 09/30/2009, -4/+27Car fumes are both CO2 and CO.
CO is a result of incomplete combustion. Ideally, a complete burn would result in CO2 and H2O. - mrgeekguy, on 09/30/2009, -7/+28I was hoping they would show a village full of Bangladeshi's waste deep in water all shouting "CO2! IT'S GOOD FOR US!!!"
- captininsanity, on 09/30/2009, -10/+31CO2 is actually a liberal conspiracy to take down Americas industry. Our troubled wildlife is due to lack of factory exhaust and coal burning!
- iBleeedOrange, on 09/30/2009, -3/+23Wow, two Onion articles in one day
...wait - lolerskate, on 09/29/2009, -14/+34Sure CO2 is a, essential component of life as we know it, doesnt mean im gonna go and breath car exhaust fumes.
- k3rfuffl3, on 09/30/2009, -4/+21"CO2 is not the main greenhouse gas, it is water vapour by a long way."
From a comment on the page. CO2 is not the only thing produced when you burn hydrocarbons like gasoline/diesel/natural gas. Equation for burning methane, a component of natural gas, is:
CH4 + 2 O2 -> CO2 +2 H2O
That H2O part is pure water vapor so you're really emitting two green house gases when you burn fossil fuels. - Swivelstick, on 09/30/2009, -2/+19And the smoking doesn't cause cancer mob.
- k3rfuffl3, on 09/30/2009, -2/+16Even drinking too much water can cause high blood pressure leading to brain swelling and ultimately death.
- zeusx99, on 09/30/2009, -2/+16dying energy industry?
I'd say increasingly unpopular energy industry, but it's hardly dying... - ptoomey, on 09/30/2009, -1/+15That's Dihydrogen Monoxide, one of the most dangerous substances known to man!

I know, I know, don't feed the trolls. But I couldn't resist. - Brassbud, on 09/30/2009, -8/+22This is actually almost certainly true on a large scale. Most periods condusive to life during the Earth's existence have had far higher temperatures and CO2 levels than today. CO2 might be bad for society and some current ecosystems, but to say that it is bad for the Earth is a bit narrow-minded.
- ChromaVita, on 09/30/2009, -0/+14It's the name of next year's G20
- Dregganaut, on 09/30/2009, -2/+15it's CO2, not C-zero-2
- buckrogers1965, on 09/30/2009, -5/+18Idea for their next ad campaign: "Are you getting your daily recommended dose of lead and arsenic everyday?"
- Dregganaut, on 09/30/2009, -5/+18Yeah, ***** facts, we've got a science fiction author on our side!
- squinky86, on 09/30/2009, -2/+15CO2 is only one ingredient. We therefore need to poke a hole in the ozone layer over where we're increasing CO2 concentrations to let in more sunlight! You, my frend, are a genius!
- inactive, on 09/30/2009, -5/+17We should start irrigating with sports drinks. They have electrolytes, and thats what plants crave.
On another note, have you ever seen plants grow out of a toilet? Because that's where water comes from. A toilet. - Shwaavay, on 09/30/2009, -4/+15Except that water vapor condenses into clouds which reflect sunlight causing global cooling. Run for your lives.

- brsox2445, on 09/30/2009, -8/+19Words fail to express how ignorant some people are. I dont care if you are conservative or liberal, democrat or republican, etc. no one should want to claim these morons as their own.
- supermanly, on 09/30/2009, -4/+15If Siberia becomes a fertile bread-basket, then anything within the tropics is going to hell in a handbasket.
- Murrabbit, on 09/30/2009, -4/+15Yeah water is good for nature, too, but too much of it and we've got some serious problems. The sad part is their calculation that a fair segment of the US population is dumb enough to buy this ***** is probably correct.
- NiftyG, on 09/30/2009, -4/+14You're right, it did come from the atmosphere.
The atmosphere of a much earlier Earth that didn't support human life. That CO2 was sequestered away over time, and now we have a milder climate that is quite lovely and perfect for humans.
If you want to turn back the clock a few hundred million years, then release the carbon. No guarantees that the resulting climate will be hospitable to humans, though. - desertDenizen, on 09/30/2009, -1/+11"... humans have nothing to do with it."
My four Taco Bell meximelts from tonight are disagreeing with you as we speak. :) - Math, on 09/30/2009, -0/+10The Earth had high levels of CO2 in the atmosphere around 60 million years ago, when the first birds had just evolved, and there are insects the length of a small car, flying around.
I for one would rather leave things the way they are now. - kartman2001, on 09/30/2009, -7/+17Bad trick by the oil industries, but I am pretty sure that Southern California Edison, Exxon etc... are not a "dying energy industry". Fossil Fuels will be around for quite a while.
- gernblansted, on 09/30/2009, -0/+10O2 is life saving. Pure O2 under pressure is death. That's why scuba divers use dominantly nitrogen/O2 mixtures until the nitrogen becomes "toxic" (narcosis - the nitrogen won't kill you, but you'll get so high you'll probably kill yourself), then at deeper depths they start using helium/O2 mixtures.
- Lefts, on 09/30/2009, -1/+11No, the ads that the ad you were referring to was mocking.
- ChileanGoD, on 09/30/2009, -12/+21FOR THE LOVE OF GOD PEOPLE!... it's C O 2... it's a ***** O!... for OXYGEN! it's not a zero.
Same goes for H2O, CO and so on.
THERE IS NO ***** MOLECULE NAME THAT HAS A ***** ZERO IN IT!...
/Chemistry nazi out - siwasher, on 09/30/2009, -0/+9The more things change.....In the 70s in California, PGE (I think) ads said that the water around nuclear reactors actually contained more life than elsewhere. True enough: the warmer water clogged up with algal growth.
- Hrodrik, on 09/30/2009, -2/+11"Thank you for contacting CO2 Is Green. We are a nonprofit issue advocacy organization. Our mission is to support scientifically and economically sound public policy on environmental issues. Currently, we are especially concerned with federal proposals that would interfere with nature's dependence on carbon dioxide (C02).
CO2 is not a pollutant. CO2 makes Earth green because it supports all plant life. It is Earth's greatest airborne fertilizer. Even man-made
CO2 contributes to plant growth that in turn sustains humanity and ecosystems.

***** off. - Swivelstick, on 09/30/2009, -2/+11Stating that the majority of the scientific community is doing this for political gain is a flat out lie used by ignorant pricks to try and make their arguments more plausible. Sadly it works as people would rather look to invisible friends for salvation then to the people with the brains that can do something about it.
- tidu, on 09/30/2009, -3/+11What are you guys talking about? The earth was created 6000 years ago.
- zoomer123, on 09/30/2009, -2/+10The Competitive Enterprise Institute made a similar ad not long ago.
