I'm not bitter, but I would have been if I had bought google stock 2 months ago.

Google just went from "do no evil" to "do good". I, for one, applaud this initiative.

They need to have those features available for starving kids in 3rd world countries. It'd be much more interesting watching a moving blob.

Now I can't wait to I get home and buy a tree or two (I'd do it right now but I'm at work and there's no way I'm going to enter payment info in Windows).
And I'll tell everyone I know too.

Good idea, but how many times would you bother checking to see if Google has updated the view? You'd get more out of planting your own tree.

If you really want to pay someone to plant the tree then make money off of YOUR tree by selling the carbon credits to Al freaking Gore and his cronies, sure do it. Or if you don't want to do something really, really, smart and call your city's parks department and ask where they are planting trees and if you can donate to help fund it, or better yet donate to fund it then ask if you can help plant it yourself. Please give the money to your local parks department most are broke and would be happy with any donation you would give. Nahhh that would make too much sense, to plant your own tree, locally where you can do something really really unthinkable, like see it with your own eyes and it doesn't take any electricity to walk up to its trunk, and give it a hug if you like. No plant one around on the other side of the world where the only way to watch it is by using a stinking computer. Personally I'll just watch my own trees, in my own yard grow, and volunteer to help plant the trees as I usually do when our parks department does plantings. Please people get a life, plant a tree yourself, Don't waste your money paying someone to do it for you. This has my vote for most idiotic green idea of the week award, because there are quite a few floating around out there. Maybe I should start a blog dedicated to it since it appears there are more people with money than brains out there. Ok, rant over now, I feel better.

I should have tough about that for my backyard. Giving everybody pics each 3months and having a hundred trees in the backyard for almost free.

Um.. just as an FYI for those praising/condemning Google, they've got absolutely nothing to do with this. The company behind the "initiative" is just using Google Earth as a method by which you can view your "donation"...

Now we need to have Google plant some microphones in the woods to answer the life long question... "If a tree falls in the woods and nobody is around, does it make a sound?"

They took all the trees, put em in a tree museum. And they charge people 5 dollars and a half to see 'em.

I guess it does beat my pet rock. Although I'd be pretty ***** if some native decides to cut down my tree for fire wood. Does that $5.50 cover security too?

Um... in case you didn't know, they push impoverished people in third world nations out of their houses and level entire villages just so people can plant their trees and get off to their own "goodness". These plant a tree things have always been utter *****.

Pay $2.50 for seeds and plant the tree in your backyard. That way you can look out your "Windows" to see the tree instead of Google Earth.

This just in - Pay 5.50 and watch paint dry in china via webcast! But seriously... I would rather have them spend all their efforts on just planting the tree instead of tracking it. Its a waste of money to spend the extra time getting the coordinates and inputting them into a database and so on.

Great idea !! Work the marketing and people are going to talk about it. And that what's happening here ! I have the idea that we could probaly go further. I'm working on a reforestation concept in the same direction that will allow you to invest in different places around the world .. meaning different products, prices and effects (CO2, sunstainable impact, social impact and so on) ... what do you think ? any advices, ideas ...
