- socialpyramid, on 11/09/2007, -1/+17And remember that BP spent more money on their logo and name change (to Beyond Petroleum) than they had on actual renewable energy development? http://environmentalblogging.org/?p=415
- inactive, on 11/09/2007, -2/+16Article title: Ad Suggests Shell Uses CO2 Waste To Grow Flowers, Ad Standards Agency Suggests Shell Shut Up. Ahhh shell. I love how someone actually came up with this idea, and that it made it through several rounds of discussion at ad agencies and with shell, and nobody mentioned "By the way, everyone is going to know this is complete and utter BS." Seriously, who is going to say to themselves: "Yeah, i totally believe Shell uses all those millions of tons of CO2 emissions to grow flowers." Advertising is amazing sometimes.
- BufordT, on 11/10/2007, -2/+10FTA "a Shell ad that showed flowers spouting from the chimney of an oil refinery, suggesting the company used all of its CO2 waste for beneficial purposes like flower growing."
How does that suggest they use ALL of their CO2 waste for purposes like flower growing? Did they actually state it, or was it just images. If it was just images of flowers coming out of a smokestack, that is a pretty soft argument. - jonnyboy1544, on 11/10/2007, -0/+5Hate to break it to you all but the oil and gas industry has invested more money in renewable and alternative fuels than anyone else... including the US government, Natural Resources Defense Council, George Soros, the Tides Foundation and the likes.
- BigBlueCarbon, on 11/08/2007, -2/+6evil corporations.
- hammerattack, on 11/10/2007, -0/+3I really am sick of the EV1 "who killed the electric car" ***** buddy. The entire line of EV1's were prototypes. They were never intended for sale whicih is why every last one of them were leased to consumers with the FULL UNDERSTANDING that they'd be recalled at some point. Do you know what happenned to the EV1? 70 mile range. That's as far as you could actually go on a single charge. I know a guy that owned one, and he basically bought it to show off. He turned it back in to GM when he realized how god damned ugly it was.
When they make an electric car that can recharge in 5 minutes and go 400 miles on that charge, you'll find them selling like hot cakes. - hammerattack, on 11/10/2007, -0/+3....or both? I mean... a company operating for profit... what a concept.
- homey007, on 11/10/2007, -0/+3I agree that this article is very biased. I don't think the commercial makes any claim that "ALL", "MOST", or even "A LOT" of their CO2 emissions are going into this flower growing program. I feel Shell is just trying to let the outside world now they're looking into different ways to reduce their CO2 footprint and I feel that programs like these should be praised, not rejected.

If you aren't living like a caveman, you aren't doing enough.
Seriously, a company tries to do something positive and gets spanked for it? Just not cricket to me. - HotSauce750, on 11/08/2007, -3/+5The increased rates of Cancer in the area? That's because you're all sinners!!
- RunLikeTheWind, on 11/10/2007, -1/+3Make a movie about greenhouse gas without actually reducing CO2 (including the eight years you were vice president) -> win a Nobel prize.
Advertise a small pilot program of an innovative technology that could lead to major reductions of CO2 -> it's corporate deception. - hammerattack, on 11/10/2007, -1/+3Careful. Truth like that won't get you anywhere. These environMentalists like to think that companies like BP, Shell et all are "oil" companies. They're incapable of seeing the bigger "energy" picture and realizing that these companies know full well they'll need to transition to renewable sources soon. But "soon" isn't good enough for some people. They expect it to magically appear yesterday with no concern over how it's going to be paid for.
- darthom, on 11/09/2007, -0/+2Three-card Monte, anyone?
- radikal3dward, on 11/09/2007, -0/+1No, you're right, "soon" ISN'T good enough for me. Honestly, NOW isn't good enough for me. 1997 might possibly have been "good enough for me." Anybody remember th EV1??? Amazingly, it was a GM vehicle, fully electric, wonderfully accepted, NOT ONE CAR SAT ON THE LOT. Not to say that every car was bought, 'cause outright purchase was impossible, they only released them as leases. Where are they now? They're in a scrap yard (http://www.electrifyingtimes.com/ev1crush.html), virtually stolen from their dedicated "owners."
- DasCrackbaby, on 11/10/2007, -5/+6WHO WANTS TO FIGHT?
ALL CAPS = SERIOUS BUSINESS - radikal3dward, on 11/09/2007, -0/+1True, you point is...

- lukasmack, on 11/09/2007, -4/+4Now if only they would nail our ISPs.
Sorry unrelated but necassary. - radikal3dward, on 11/10/2007, -1/+1You're right, they have, 'cause they actually had the money to do so, thanks to my $3+/gal. Do you actually think they're putting that kind of money into renewable energy sources _because_ they're renewable, or because they're likely to be profitable in the future, and they know their present system is doomed?
- inactive, on 11/09/2007, -9/+3Who cares. Damn tree huggers.
