- StigNordas, on 11/20/2007, -1/+15I got a weekly veggie basket as a gift from a local farm last year. It was fantastic, all seasonal stuff, locally grown (with 100 miles) and organic. Great gift idea, even got me to eat raw turnips.
- tambird, on 11/20/2007, -1/+14I loved the make your own satchel out of all those plastic bags part. Talk about shabby chic.
- straydreamer, on 11/20/2007, -1/+12I hear a lot of good things about things crafted from bamboo. Poke around a bit and you can find some pretty inexpensive stuff, ranging from furniture to smaller and cheaper home decor item. And as I understand it is a highly renewable resource.
- PeachesTheCow, on 11/20/2007, -7/+16Why anyone would want to go to a mall this Friday blows my mind. The populace is truly pathetic.
- jessiejac, on 11/20/2007, -2/+10I'm green, but I'm no cabbage so I need all the help I can get to come up with "good" gifts this year. This list will get me started, and maybe even finished too. Now if only she could recommend a way to spend less green too...
- inactive, on 11/20/2007, -1/+9This list is great, very thoughtful. I always try to shop local but this takes it to the next level. I already have people in mind for some of these gifts. Others I would never have thought to give but under the umbrella of sustainable lifestyle I think it would be cool to receive these as gifts.
- inactive, on 11/20/2007, -1/+9Just think about the amount of waste you can skip by bringing your own bags if you need to shop. Just like at the supermarket. I'm always amazed at the amount of store branded bags I'm stuck with. Great guide by the way. Far more complete than a list of more things to buy.
- homedaddy, on 11/20/2007, -0/+8we get a box every other week. it's a challenge to learn to use new veggies but the kids love it and it's fun. We haven't made it out to the farm yet but I can't wait to go check it out.
- inactive, on 11/20/2007, -0/+8A fantastic idea, plus all the revenue goes to the farmers themselves and not the middle-men.
- MFallopian, on 11/20/2007, -1/+8next up: recycled Christmas cards.
- PaulGriffin, on 11/20/2007, -1/+8Am I the only one who doesnt give a ***** about this "Green" Propaganda garbage?
I'm sleeping with the lights on tonight...Maybe i'll turn the shower on the prep for the morning as well. Creates the illusion of sleeping in a rain forest y'know! - meandnips, on 11/20/2007, -1/+8The Sigg bottles are great, and also the recycled grocery bags, which I try and use now (the only problem is remembering them when I go grocery shopping)
- sashapave, on 11/20/2007, -1/+7The "All Food Recycling Compost Kit with Bokashi" looks awesome. My current composting bin next to the sink is getting a bit rank. Oh, wait, it's a gift guide. Crap. 'One for you... One for me' :)
- socialdork, on 11/20/2007, -1/+7The three Rs...Reduce, Reuse, Recycle. OK Did no one else start humming that Jack Johnson song from Curious George? Come on? No?
- MTessa, on 11/20/2007, -2/+8Black Friday is insane. The day americans go spend a ton of money on things they don't need. Yeah for a green list. I still say buy what you need or can use.
- inactive, on 11/20/2007, -1/+7Cool, nothing like getting an early start on gift giving season!
- inactive, on 11/20/2007, -1/+6Thankfully none of these are going to require a trip to the mall.
- trystero49, on 11/20/2007, -1/+5with global warming aren't we all getting a green xmas? (ducks)
- sashapave, on 11/20/2007, -0/+4Just be careful about planting that stuff in your garden, it can be almost impossible to get rid of unless you can find a panda/koala rental service.
- inactive, on 11/20/2007, -2/+6Very nice list of ideas. I like how it actually makes you think vs another shopping list.
- StigNordas, on 11/20/2007, -0/+3is it just me or does shopping seem to start earlier and earlier each year?
- ritita, on 11/20/2007, -1/+4i love it. Used bikes for everyone this year.
- inactive, on 11/20/2007, -1/+3Someone buy me a breezer bike please!
- 1aaaa, on 11/20/2007, -0/+2Well now I am.
- sashapave, on 11/20/2007, -0/+2just remember to car-pool or drive your hybrid!
- ritita, on 11/20/2007, -0/+2seriously. every year it just pops out of nowhere and then im behind.
- inactive, on 11/20/2007, -0/+2And as a bonus you get 1bn bokashi buddies hanging out in your compost bin.
- inactive, on 11/20/2007, -0/+2America's new past time: Consumption. People spending money they don't have on things they don't need. Fortunately, I won't have to "think green" this upcoming Friday because I'll be at work earning money rather than wasting it. Traffic will be a bitch, though. Oh well. Happy shopping, America.
- MunkeeBoy, on 11/20/2007, -0/+2For those of you who are interested there are stores out there who sell only sustainable products. I went to a "Green Drinks" night recently for a sustainable design group called O2. There's plenty of stores buying stuff from sustainable designers. This is the website of one guy I met there who owns a store called Ecolateral. They don't have a Christmas Sale but their Christmas pitch is "This Christmas get your friends and family something that won't cost the Earth." It would be nice to see a site made up that is a directory for sustainable stores. For those interested here is a link to get started:
http://www.ecolateral.biz/ - Homerr, on 11/20/2007, -0/+2Tip #1: Don't go buy a bunch of ***** you don't need.
- rlm051, on 11/20/2007, -0/+2woo i work at best buy on this day i hope they blast death metal to keep the hippies out
- Rickler, on 11/20/2007, -1/+3The products that have those 'great deals' are the ***** you wouldn't buy normally. For instance, the Soyo 24inch monitor for $300, this monitor comes with a thick 2 inch border and 4 inch chin for a bezel. Even so, you are probably going to buy it aren't you? Ohhh 10 bluray disks from the discount bin if I buy a $500 PS3? All the ***** movies I have seen and never want to see, ohhay!
- Iaianrocks, on 11/20/2007, -2/+3seriously go green is the new fad for companies to trick consumers im tired of this green *****. and all you neo hippy ***** who dugg this should go green and shut of their computers and never use the internet again. DIE ***** HIPPIES --- Cartman
- OneLess, on 11/20/2007, -0/+1An opportunity to do Christmas shopping without wasting time on a weekend? Some of us actually have lives.
- cagedit, on 11/20/2007, -0/+1Read the highlights and it seems that article is about Black Tuesday, not Black Friday.
- StigNordas, on 11/20/2007, -0/+1awesome, just don't let Target see you do it, they just cracked down on Timbuk2 for doing a similar thing.
- Babazoz, on 11/20/2007, -2/+2Or you could just say, "***** the hippie bastards, I'll get whatever the ***** I want with money I made."
- solis365, on 11/20/2007, -1/+1*shrug* even though a lot of people may do that, there are a lot of good deals on stuff. for example, you can find really cheap tools, appliances, clothing, DVDs, TVs, etc.
if youre buying a big ticket item like a tv anyway, whats wrong with saving a few hundred bucks? - dfsjdkflasjk, on 11/20/2007, -0/+0Want to become more green? Close this website, turn off your computer, and donate it to a charity. It'll save them from buying new machines and reduce your power consumption.
- quomen, on 11/20/2007, -1/+1I just don't get how this article relates to black fridiay.
But seriously, on black friday who has time to think about this kind of stuff? You gotta GRAB and GO! - mistahthompson, on 12/04/2007, -1/+0with thoughts like these, it's no wonder you work at best buy.
- mattwalton56, on 11/20/2007, -3/+2As a response to all of the hippies that dugg this, I'm about to go turn on ever light in my house and then go have a tree burning party. :-)
- drgooch, on 01/25/2008, -4/+2wow, what a bunch of tree huggers....
- deose, on 11/20/2007, -4/+2I thought it was giong to be a way to save money not the environment. buried.
