- inactive, on 08/20/2008, -4/+64My only regret is that I have but one digg to give for that comment.
- tonaros, on 08/20/2008, -0/+54I did. It asked me if I meant "aspartame"
- kellfinder, on 08/20/2008, -8/+61I am outraged about this yet not surprised. It really shows just what is more important to government agencies......money.
- ACTtravel, on 08/20/2008, -14/+64this is crazy. i cant believe something like this can happen. same thing they did with sugar substitutes (ie aspertaine). Google that lol.
- mandraque, on 08/20/2008, -2/+43FDA has a very bad record, it works for food industry and big pharma, not food safety.
- ozziegt, on 08/20/2008, -1/+36You are obviously not a parent. Baby bottles are steam sterlized after every feeding, and boiled (aka sterilized) hot water is poured into them all the time. The microwave warnings are only for heating up food...there are no recommendations or warnings about microwaving for sterilization purposes.
Furthermore, the fact that Europe and Canada have already BANNED BPA products for children is a pretty big sign IMO. Also, the fact that Nalgene recently has replaced polycarbonate with a new plastic (called Dupont Triton) after being on the pro-BPA front for so long should also tell you something. - AndrewDB, on 08/20/2008, -4/+33Big companies paying off government officials?!
I'm shocked.. - kemp34, on 08/20/2008, -9/+36Just another example of how the FDA cares more about lining pockets than truly doing good. A government sponsored monopoly is just as bad, if not far worse, than one that arises in the free market. Why should we grant such power to a government sponsored monopoly? Especially when our safety is concerned.
- sinurgy, on 08/20/2008, -11/+33Seriously..."Big Plastic"?
- westfork, on 08/20/2008, -2/+24Everything I needed to know about the Government protecting my health I learned from the USDA's response to a Washington State cow testing positive for Mad Cow... they made it illegal to test for Mad Cow in American cattle (unless the cow was really, really old).
- chuckDontSurf, on 08/20/2008, -1/+21"Who puts boiling water into a baby bottle?"
I think the article's referring to sterilization. The bottles I've seen instruct you to sterilize them in boiling water - FTLJohnson, on 08/20/2008, -13/+32Another failed liberal attempt at safety and security through depending on government to be mommy.
It's OK though, conservatives depend on government to be their abusive daddy... and go kill all them brown people in Iraq. Together, BOTH conservatives and liberals can unite to destroy the world through willful ignorance by depending on Government, in an effort to outsource force and delegate responsibility.
Some of us read this, and it's not shocking at all. These are the one's who might be starting to wake up and take a look around. - kingmanic, on 08/20/2008, -1/+20It's releases an estrogen analog. Estrogen encourages fat storage. As well as man boobs, premature puberty, and various other problems.
Using BPA plastics for hot drinks makes the release 50 or more times worse. - perlabsrat, on 08/20/2008, -3/+21"One Corporation under God"
- TheAngryMob, on 08/20/2008, -1/+19Breast feed your babies and avoid the problem altogether (and make them healthier to boot).
- DiggRage, on 08/20/2008, -4/+22What, should every household have its own lab to test every product they might buy? Can you please suggest an alternative to having government agencies monitor these companies and products? Maybe if the elected officials of the American government weren't in the pockets of the big corporations, these agencies would be performing their duties as assigned. The problem isn't having government perform these duties... the problem is not having the right government doing it... and that government is one that listens to the people, is voted for by the people, and works for the people; and not soulless corporations with the bottom line as the only objective.
- chrism123, on 08/20/2008, -2/+19Lets also not forget the FDA making it illegal to label food as GMO. Thanks Monsanto.
- Takfam, on 08/20/2008, -1/+16Sorry to say, but you'll find both sides of the aspartame controversy are shady. Many of the studies that spoke against its use were funded by the sugar industry.
- Jacare, on 08/20/2008, -0/+15the first time aspartame went before the FDA(1980), the FDA shot it down because three independent scientists confirmed that it "might induce brain tumors." On January 21, 1981, the day after Ronald Reagan's inauguration, they re-applied to the FDA for approval to use aspartame. Reagan's new FDA commissioner, Arthur Hayes Hull, Jr., appointed a 5-person Commission to review the use of aspartame. after the initial five members voted 3-2 to uphold the ban Hull added 6th member to the review board and the vote became deadlocked. He then personally broke the tie in aspartames favor. and who might you think was the CEO of G.D. Searle & Company at this time?(the company trying to get aspartame approved) well it was none other than Donald Rumsfeld, that's right Bush's former secretary of defense, the guy who disbanded the Iraqi military and is basically responsible for the US having to police all of Iraq.
- phineous, on 08/20/2008, -2/+16Plastic is made from oil and chemicals so big plastic is an unholy marrige of big oil (you know the players) and big chemical (Dow, BASF, Monsanto, etc.).
If you don't think those corporations have lobbying power, then you don't think. - kingmanic, on 08/20/2008, -5/+19Du Pont, Dow, 3M, etc... Some of the largest corporations one earth.
- kingmanic, on 08/20/2008, -1/+14You may want to look at studies of BPA plastics. They do leak estrogen analogs. They do so at really high rates when used with warm or hot drinks of via boiling to sterilize. The release is within the range of "harmful" even when used with cold drinks. Canada has already banned them due to current research on the topic.
- Kenzan, on 08/20/2008, -3/+15When legitimate scientists have conducted studies on BPA, it is consistently linked
to obesity....
HUH?
Obesity from Plastic?
WTF? - CoopSa, on 08/20/2008, -4/+16Any idea why your toaster doesn't catch on fire when you plug it in? Turn just about any appliance over and you will find the UL logo. Underwriters Laboratories is a private company and vendors submit their products for testing. The government is not involved. If you want to sell your toasters in the big evil Wal-Mart, they require you to do this because they like their customers to buy safe products and keep coming back to spend more money. People think that because food product safety is the government's responsibility they don't need a private accreditation agency to evaluate food packaging. We need to ABOLISH the FDA, they kill many times more people than they help!
- kingmanic, on 08/20/2008, -0/+11some people are more 'people' then others. If the Gov. has an aspect that doesn't work for me it's a decade long battle to get enough people to pressure the law makers into change. If I'm a corporations I just pay a hundred thousand to a lobbiest, he has lunch and a bill is drafted within a week.
- AbsurdParadox, on 08/20/2008, -13/+24Pro tip: The problem is Government, not Businesses
- Phearce, on 08/20/2008, -1/+12"Not heat stable." Lucky then that it's never used in hot things like coffee or tea. Oh, it needs to be hotter? Fair enough. Lucky it's never used in anything that goes in a microwave. Whew, thanks chemistry.
- afruff23, on 08/20/2008, -1/+11Dupont is always involved in some conspiracy (according to conspiracy theorists).
- ozziegt, on 08/20/2008, -1/+11Actually, boiling incrases the rate at which BPA is leeched even at normal temperatures. Also, when you put boiling hot water in a bottle because it has been sterilized, the purpose is to keep the previously boiled and clean water in the bottle and to let it cool so the child can drink it.
And people aren't dandy...there are a lot of diseases in children which at are at an all time high and we don't know the cause.
We use heavier glass bottles for our child and it's worth it for us...one less thing to worry about. - kevintmckay, on 08/20/2008, -0/+10people who sell out like this should be tracked down and prosecuted
- shawnanigans, on 08/20/2008, -0/+10I'll use the completely objective test for aspartame that it has a horrible aftertaste and ban it.
- ManOfVirtues, on 08/20/2008, -0/+9:: looks down ::
So that's my problem. Can I Sue? - MadLeper, on 08/20/2008, -1/+10Canada removed BPA products not because they were proven unsafe, but "just to be on the safe side". All BPA products sold in Canada were tested by Health Canada and found to be safe, testing well below the limits for any effect on human health.
Many studies show smoking as a dangerous health hazard, yet it's still legal. So why doesn't Health Canada ban smoking "just to be on the safe side" ?
And if Europe bans BPA products, you can bet it's because some big Euro trade organization wants to eliminate competition, not because of any safety concerns.
This is just more narrow-minded zealotry from the eco-nut/Soccer Mom/Anti-Corporate crowd. File this under Aspartame, mercury in vaccines and killer WiFi radiation. - inactive, on 08/20/2008, -1/+9And for some reason, the thought of the FDA being paid off....doesn't surprise me at all.
- matthewf01, on 08/20/2008, -0/+8I was gonna make fun of him as well for telling me to look up something he misspelled, but your way was much more clever.
- inactive, on 08/20/2008, -2/+10Excuse me, but I had no clue about this, and I'm sure MOST people don't otherwise the shelves at Target, Walmart, etc would not be lined with these products.
- woofers07, on 08/20/2008, -0/+8I'm sorry but if you're suprised by this you need to wake the ***** up. Not just you but everybody
- 955701, on 08/20/2008, -2/+10Agreed. I've actually moved away from caring about anything the government says or does. My friends and I have effected our own organization, pooled out resources and have actually become very happy doing it. We have a doctor, we have a mechanic, I fix all the computers in the group. It's nice because since I'm the community computer guy, I get to dictate what everyone runs and what computers they have - They win because they have a good computer guy and I win because the systems are consistent & I get payback in return - kid-sitting, auto-work, house keeping. It's working really well so far.
We're using a LETS system to manage our "bartering" so everything is fair. And we've capped the group so it's only close people with like personalities - no chance of cliques, distruct or subversive behavior forming.
So we're just waiting for the FBI to show up and arrest all of us now. - inactive, on 08/20/2008, -0/+7DO NOT piss off big chocolate man.
- BoneheadFarker, on 08/20/2008, -1/+8@kingmanic
Exactly. And if corporation weren't legally considered to be a person, they'd have a much harder time getting away with that *****. - CrackyJSquirrel, on 08/20/2008, -0/+7Not necessarily. My wife went back to work after maternity leave and pumped the milk into a bottle for our sitter to use. So yeah, we breast fed but because of the circumstances it still was in a bottle.
- neurobox, on 08/20/2008, -0/+7"Haven't you guys figured it out yet? This is a government of the corporations, by the corporations, and for the corporations..."
Hey! They're people too, ya know... well, legally... - jeff419, on 08/20/2008, -11/+18Violent overthrow keeps looking better and better
- Chyeld, on 08/20/2008, -9/+16Or maybe, just maybe, the fact that the few studies that have proven something were flawed means a bunch of people who are ignoring the fact that it's been in use for about 50 years and we haven't suddenly turned into lobster clawed freaks are simply looking for something to get excited over.
Folks this is a chemical that is literally everywhere in our life. There are few people out there who don't test as having it in their system. And the FDA isn't the only government agency out there that has concluded that it's safe in present levels. The EU, Germany, and Japan have all had their agencies say that same. - ozziegt, on 08/20/2008, -4/+11I am pretty sure BPA is banned for children in Europe. It is definitely banned in Canada.
- afruff23, on 08/20/2008, -5/+12@DiggRage
Ever heard of "Consumer Reports"?
You're living in a pipedream if you think that government would be better if only the right people were in power. - wunksta, on 08/20/2008, -1/+7you mean corporations control our government? i thought that was normal.
