- jerryjamesstone, on 07/16/2009, -1/+23You know what's really green, if he gets cold ...turn off the heater, and let him cuddle up with his cellmate.
- brucealmighty, on 07/16/2009, -0/+19Of course being rich and famous got him a HUGE break in the selection of his prison. This one is a Boy Scout camp compared to High Security classification prisons to which anyone with over 30 years to serve is normally required to be sent. Somebody definitely pulled a lot of strings on his behalf.
- granolajoe, on 07/16/2009, -0/+18Sweet! He'll be able to run his handjob Ponzi scheme and save energy at the same time!
- bigthree, on 07/16/2009, -0/+15at least our tax dollars won't have to spend as much keeping his cell lit at night
- mikecap, on 07/17/2009, -0/+11They should make the prisoners run in giant hamster wheels hooked to turbines to generate electricity.
- DaviDTC, on 07/17/2009, -1/+12His direct actions have resulted in a couple suicides and ruined entire families while making his own have the life of luxury.
- deweyhewson, on 07/17/2009, -2/+8So he swindles people out of almost countless amounts of money, and we pay to put him up in comfortable surroundings for the rest of his life.
I wouldn't have it any other way, necessarily, but sometimes it blows being a civilized nation. - jester55, on 07/17/2009, -4/+10Yo dawg I heard you like money so we put you in a green prison so you can save money while you steal money!
- orville1151, on 07/17/2009, -2/+6Spire, I don't think that someone being pushed beyond the edge of despair makes them stupid.
Everyone, including you, has a breaking point. You just haven't seen yours. Yet. And I hope you never do.
Besides, what about those who were depending on their savings to pay for their medical needs?
Do they just die because Madoff was a thief? He, in my opinion, is no better than the thug who kills a clerk at an all night store for $50. And he deserves to be treated like the common thug. - sheagunther42, on 07/17/2009, -0/+4Building a LEED certified building isn't terribly more expensive than non-LEED and they're WAY cheaper to run over the long term, so a 30 year picture has this place saving loads of cash. I'd like to see a solar powered electric chair.
- inactive, on 07/17/2009, -0/+4For those who wish this man to suffer in such ways as mentioned. I understand the gutteral response, but step back and think. He is going to die in prison. It is still a prison, and for a man that was used to a big yacht, and extreme luxury, this will appear to be hell on earth. And, he's there for the rest of his life.
Can we concentrate on where the money went, and his co-conspirators? You know, the people who know where the loot is. Maybe some money can be returned to the victims, who now are in their own hell, financially. - orville1151, on 07/17/2009, -0/+3Knock a year off his sentence for every billion dollars he can find, or every co-conspirator he can name.
They might find that all of a sudden he can remember were more of the money went, or who helped him perpetrate the fraud. - RandomGorilla, on 07/17/2009, -2/+5Prison shower rape with low-flow shower heads. Can you imagine that? Not only will he get convict penile DESTRUCTION rained down upon his man-*****, it'll take a ***** hour just to wash his hair.
- pyrogyro, on 07/17/2009, -0/+2Bet his cell wont be as decorated as Martha Stewarts either
- deadlyrice, on 07/17/2009, -2/+4As far as I'm concerned he deserves to be in a federal pound me in the ass prison.
- scarlettletter, on 07/16/2009, -0/+2It would be interesting to know how much more it costs in tax dollars to build such a facility. I like the idea though.
- consonance, on 07/17/2009, -0/+2And look on the bright side: being able to view PG-13 films, Madoff will be able to watch Live Free Or Die Hard as many times as he likes!
- mtxrawkus, on 07/17/2009, -0/+1Lets add a solar-powered guillotine and call it a day!
- jaaames, on 07/17/2009, -0/+1This is gonna be just like Shawshank Redemption, except he's gonna die pretty soon and he's evil. Excellent!
- craftyguy, on 07/17/2009, -0/+1I bet the prison walls are made of recycled cardboard or something.
- conceptracr, on 07/17/2009, -1/+2Just because he has to serve over 30 years does not mean he has to serve in a high security prison. The nature of the crime that was committed determines the level of security that is needed.
Butner is no boy scout camp. There are rapists, assailants, murderers, along with white collar criminals in this facility. - Shigglyboo, on 07/17/2009, -0/+1I'm still pissed. I read that he'll be in one of 5 "dormitory" style accommodations. So, in other words, he'll be living more comfortably than some poor people.
- kineticarl, on 07/17/2009, -0/+1This can be true, but it depends on what Leed points they got. And "certified" is the lowest level, and really doesn't even describe any kind of energy savings. They do get points for bike and hybrid parking, for instance. And the USGBC is only now starting to follow up on buildings' actual performance after construction.
- regulan, on 07/17/2009, -0/+1Hey thanks for perpetuating the myth that hybrids should be special treatment. Silly hybrids getting preferential treatment even though I have a diesel car that gets 15% to 20% better real world millage than any hybrid on the market, were're talking 60+mpg, show me a hybrid that can even come close to that.
When will people learn that hybrid don't decrease emissions, then increase mileage. - vertinox, on 07/17/2009, -0/+1To be fair a few of the people he swindled committed suicide.
- nreynolds, on 07/18/2009, -1/+1@ vertinox
yeah, and that's horrible. but he didn't kill them, he didn't even come close. You don't give someone wife 50 years in prison if her husband commits suicide after she divorces him. - ECPDancer, on 07/16/2009, -1/+1this is crazy.
- inactive, on 07/17/2009, -2/+2As long as there are environmentally unfriendly inmates to pound him in the ass on a regular basis like he deserves, I don't care how ***** green his new tax payer funded Shang-gri-la is.
- siwasher, on 07/17/2009, -2/+1"70 percent of construction waste was recycled and the faculty uses green cleaning products."
They call their screws 'faculty"? - Spire3660, on 07/17/2009, -6/+5Sorry, cant lay suicide on him, its a personal choice. IM not defending him in any way, merely pointing out that your logic is flawed. If someone is stupid enough to take their own life, there is no one to blame but them. See also Lori Drew.
- nreynolds, on 07/17/2009, -6/+2I can't believe how completely ridiculous people are being about this guy. Yeh, he's evil and all, but he got many more years than a ***** MURDERER would have. I don't care how much money this got lost/stole, he didn't ***** kill anyone.
I don't understand why murder doesn't carry a minimum sentence of life in prison (also should carry a maximum sentence of life in prison). But this guy got what amounts to more than a life sentence for MONEY. ***** people and the things that they believe should be true about society. - Presbyterian, on 07/17/2009, -7/+1You know alot of murders never get more than 30 years.
