"Straight above, blue sky is normal sunlight reflecting off the atmosphere. In the belt of Venus, however, the atmosphere reflects light from the setting (or rising) sun which appears more red."
Sky is blue because blue is preferentially scattered by the atmosphere so why is the belt of venus red? Is it because when the sun is setting or rising the air mass it has to pass through is so much greater so that all the blue sunlight is scattered away so only red remains? This explanation doesn't exactly explain why the blue light is not being scattered toward your eyes (which is what one would expect would happen since light is generally scattered in all directions) but instead toward the direction of the source (and away from you)...
