- sodade, on 06/11/2009, -2/+18#12 - don't have more than two kids and socially ostracize the ***** breeders with 6 kids who don't care that every child born is now a burden to our whole society.

How will I get by, without my electric knife! - Rudegar, on 06/11/2009, -0/+6buried for getting popups at all
- Alabaster1234, on 06/11/2009, -0/+5While I'm not an expert at all about recycling. I applaud you for posting the ny times article. It's amazing to me just how much people rely on comedians (and in this case comedic magicians) for their news. I guarantee you if you were to talk to either Penn or Teller and asked them what they thought about the fact that people are actually using their entertainment show as a news outlet that they would say it was scary.
I've already heard Jon Stewart in an interview give the same speech... basically that he runs a comedy show... nothing more. The people who think that it is legitimate news are scary. Granted Stewart does hold the "real" news accountable by making jokes about their stupidity... which is a great service, but he openly admits to not having a news show.
Sorry, I know that's not what you were talking about. - shanealeslie, on 06/11/2009, -0/+5#13 If it takes the same amount of time or less to earn the money for gas, insurance, and maintenance required to drive somewhere, ride a bike or walk.
I've known people that would get in their car and drive two blocks to pick up a six-pack and a pizza - and taken more time to do it then I did ON FOOT! Their engine running the entire time. - NMRgentleman, on 06/11/2009, -3/+7Interesting that their first suggestion is to use toilet paper made from recycled paper. Anybody want to comment on that? I've read in several places that recycled paper is actually worse for the environment than new paper - a Penn and Teller presentation on recycling is probably the most famous presentation of this, but there have been articles elsewhere as well. I remember one in the New York Times.
The argument is two-fold. First, most paper comes from trees grown to make paper. If we don't need that paper, we don't need those trees, and the companies that keep the forests will sell them off for some other purpose. Secondly, the recycling process requires the use of additional chemicals that are not needed for the making of fresh paper. And nature recycles paper just fine, it just takes a little longer. - TheUngod, on 06/11/2009, -1/+5This article would more accurately be titled "11 Things You Can Do to Make You Feel Better About Yourself While Accomplishing Nothing".
- NLAndyD, on 06/11/2009, -0/+3#12 - Don't use a Private Jet...unless you're Al Gore or a Hypocrite Celebutard that tells everyone else how they should live, but are not will to make any substantial changes in their own personal lives.
- NiftyG, on 06/11/2009, -0/+3I'll be sure to remove the zebra mussels from my boat as soon as I get a boat.
- NMRgentleman, on 06/11/2009, -1/+4Here is the Times article: http://www.nytimes.com/1996/06/30/magazine/recycli ...
And here is the Penn and Teller. I would give a language warning but, this is Digg: http://video.google.com/videoplay?docid=-144439167 ...
The take away message especially from the latter is that recycling, especially paper, is more about feeling good than doing good. (Penn and Teller actually attack all non-aluminum recycling, but the rest mostly on economic grounds.) - WhiskeyLemur, on 06/30/2009, -0/+2Better boating: "Back home, rinse your boat, motor and trailer; let them dry in the sun for several days before visiting a different body of water." ....Aren't we supposed to be conserving potable water or something?

- bobnoxious, on 06/11/2009, -0/+1One thing you could do that isn't on the list that outweighs all of the ones listed: telecommute!
"Work by electron..." since 1998 - 919kwjc, on 06/11/2009, -4/+5Reduce - fine.
Reuse - good idea.
Recycle - worst idea ever. If you really look at the data, the additional pollution created by increased refuse pick up, transportation, and processing is worse than just throwing the stuff away. In addition, as we cut back on paper demand we cut back on the incentive for logging companies to plant trees. More recycling = less tress (as a product of supply and demand). Finally - have you looked into the chemical process required to remove ink from newspaper? Nasty. - shanealeslie, on 06/11/2009, -0/+1Use a box cutter.
- NMRgentleman, on 06/11/2009, -0/+1GoodOldNeon... anti-recycling think tanks? Why in the world would there be anti-recycling think tanks? There are certainly some pro-economy think tanks, but they wouldn't trump up anti-recycling facts if recycling really was a net benefit.
- Velguard, on 06/11/2009, -4/+5I wasn't aware gas prices were high enough for people to care about going green again.
- TheUngod, on 06/11/2009, -0/+1Chainsaw. Possibly a hedge trimmer.
- sodade, on 06/11/2009, -0/+1Welcome to the modern world where single people pay for breeders kids through insane tax policy.
- inactive, on 06/11/2009, -1/+2What a cynical attitude!
...wait, he's right. :( - torrentprime, on 06/11/2009, -0/+1Yeah, worrying about whether our kids or grandkids will have a planet to live on is *so* absurd. Let's watch Glenn Beck cheer some more tree-chopping and run his lights real high!
- sodade, on 06/11/2009, -0/+1All societies have an optimal population range that can be supported by the combination of natural resources and human ingenuity. We are well past that point.

Mirror please - NLAndyD, on 06/11/2009, -1/+1A child is not always a burden to society, it's only a burden when parents rely on others or government to take care of their children.

Courtesy flushing or not courtesy flushing? Cause idc how much you love the environment, I don't want to smell you from the stall over. - Hellahulla, on 06/11/2009, -1/+1Aren't Penn and Teller known to have been bought out and pretty slanted in this and some other issues? Not that they don't have any merit, but like with all, should be taken carefully and investigated elsewhere.
- FritoPendejo, on 06/11/2009, -0/+0Yes, clearly, based on nothing at all.
- GoodOldNeon, on 06/11/2009, -1/+1the "facts" in that NYT article where trumped up by anti-recycling think tanks.
recycling is not perfect and it wont save the world, but, more often than not, it is helpful and efficient. most of these economic anti-recycling arguments do not take into account externalities.
see http://www.edf.org/documents/611_ACF17F.htm - No1nose, on 06/11/2009, -2/+1I'm not so sure I'd want to use recycled toilet paper. Do they have some kind of reclamation device that skims of the paper fibers at the sewer treatment plant or something?

- FritoPendejo, on 06/11/2009, -4/+2I thought that every child born was a part of our society. Why don't you clue us into the magic population figure that would acceptable to you to no longer call human beings a burden to themselves?
- mrtman, on 06/11/2009, -2/+0I use salvaged construction materials all the time....to burn in my fire pit. Sometimes it is hard to get going though, so I start it, by using old tires.
- FritoPendejo, on 06/11/2009, -4/+0I wonder how much energy was used in the power it took for the writing and reading of this article? Imaging if you actually started planning everything around your use of energy. It is a path to absurdity.
