- Viend, on 03/26/2008, -15/+208In Soviet Russia, the air pollutes YOU!
- reflex768, on 03/26/2008, -7/+178What's really tragic is the people inside the Soviet Union had no real idea how vastly their environment was being systematically raped and ruined by the state and system. All the propaganda printed in Pravda trumpeted falsely that the USSR had the best environmental protection rules in the world, and of course that things in America were greatly worst. When the collapse came and the propaganda ended, the magnitude of the problems had to be an incredibly rude awakening.
- boochicko, on 03/26/2008, -5/+141All of a sudden the LA air smells kinda nice again.
- djepik, on 03/26/2008, -1/+80Top notch photos! --- too bad the subject is so depressing.
- aaabatteries, on 03/26/2008, -4/+77why is it that the children with missing forearms are all missing their left arms rather than their right?
- drgirlfriend, on 03/26/2008, -1/+65Heh, nothing like a nice Marlboro after 12 hours of coal mining. Ahhh, smooth.
- shadowblade989, on 03/26/2008, -1/+59I was wondering why they all had to be in their underwear to show they were missing their forearms
- nextyoyoma, on 03/26/2008, -0/+41while I tire of "soviet russia" jokes, this one makes sense. +1
- rootofsilence, on 03/26/2008, -0/+41Buried because you're an idiot if you class any of those images as anything that could be 'considered child porn'
- MasterThief117, on 03/26/2008, -3/+39Will people shut up about the "child porn" already? It is only pornography if that is how you think of it. The mature diggers will understand that the photographer is showing the disabilities of these unfortunate children.
- dilibau, on 03/26/2008, -2/+38I live in a country with an ex-Soviet regime (Romania) and the magnitude of the state-driven environmental disasters is almost the same... we unfortunately have the most polluted place in Europe (called Copsa Mica) and a bunch of other smaller sites that almost look like Half Life's zombie-infested ponds. The sad thing is that it's nothing I can do to change things, corruption, lack of eco-education and lack of funds are too big of a problem (and in other ex-Soviet countries too)...
- Habemus, on 03/26/2008, -7/+37BDS at its finest. +1 for the demonstration.
You do realize that the Soviet Union was party to every international environmental protection pact of their time? Lot of good it did their citizens. - inactive, on 03/26/2008, -30/+60Now we all know the US has teh best environmental protection rules in the world!
The Bush administration told us so. While refusing to be a party to any environmental protection pacts...... - pk7677, on 03/26/2008, -2/+32Holy crap 2nd photo looks exactly like half life 2.
- Fatcheeseguy, on 03/26/2008, -7/+37These pictures made me feel how lucky I am to be living in northern California.
- 4rp4n3t, on 03/26/2008, -4/+31*****
- airburst, on 03/26/2008, -2/+24People in western countries don't know how good they have it.
- PdxPhoenix, on 03/26/2008, -0/+21Perhaps to show that they are otherwise normal?
- Pfkninenines, on 03/26/2008, -0/+19Grow up already, pervert.
- crussell96, on 03/26/2008, -0/+18get off the Turnpike!
- dakbonsa, on 03/26/2008, -1/+19http://veimages.gsfc.nasa.gov/2477/S2002011041003. ...
Well, China is following Russia's trail now.. - OneLess, on 03/26/2008, -0/+18Grow up.
- Whatup, on 03/26/2008, -1/+18Northern Californians are polluting the air with their bongs.
- matman, on 03/26/2008, -9/+26Oh my god!! Lets face it. If you are not born in the US, UK or some other English speaking nation (Western Europe notwithstanding) you are totally shafted.
- dilibau, on 03/26/2008, -1/+18your puritanist arse should go express its frustrations somewhere else
- SebG, on 03/26/2008, -0/+16You're an idiot and should quit life
- SpaceMonkeyZero, on 03/26/2008, -3/+18Worker's Paradise indeed! /s
- khemicalwar, on 03/26/2008, -0/+14I'd say enriching the air.
- howlinrain, on 03/26/2008, -0/+14Good God that is not child pornography, grow up. That picture is disturbing, not for the nudity, but due to the fact that that child and countless others have to suffer because of mankind's innate desire to develop more "sophisticated" and deadly weapons in order to wipe each other off the face of the planet. At what point is "progress" not worth it anymore?
- icono887, on 03/26/2008, -2/+16Russia never ceases to amaze me with it's ***** ups.
- inactive, on 03/26/2008, -0/+13You are a sick man, if you even thought of that.
- sivsta, on 03/26/2008, -0/+13wow, that's pretty sad.
- inactive, on 03/26/2008, -0/+13It's only child porn if you have a stump fetish.
- davidlyness, on 03/26/2008, -3/+16Most likely because the pollutants effected their genes in the same way while still in the womb.
- 4rp4n3t, on 03/26/2008, -1/+13You're not doing it right
- SpaceMonkeyZero, on 03/26/2008, -1/+13Even New Jersey lives up to it's name of "Garden State" compared to those pictures.
- dilibau, on 03/26/2008, -2/+13would you have known that the shipwreck was from the Aral Sea? do you even KNOW where the Aral Sea lies?
- MasterThief117, on 03/26/2008, -0/+11You're not very bright are you?
- Harelin, on 03/26/2008, -0/+11Perhaps it is dependent upon the photographer's intentions... if it were to portray art, yes, you would be right. But this is purely to educate, not to impress or induce wonder, and it accomplishes that goal by informing the viewer of the context.
- elementop, on 03/26/2008, -0/+11The problem is that in the Soviet Union, dissension was forcibly repressed. You need government controls to control pollution, perhaps, but you also need freedom of speech and freedom of the press to encourage the government to look out for the best interests of the population.
- Digger1218, on 03/26/2008, -2/+12Not really. Africa, most of Asia, the Former Soviet states, Eastern Europe, Mexico, Central America, and much of South America are pretty much ***** holes compared to the US and Europe, Japan, and S.Korea.
- sponeil, on 03/26/2008, -0/+10Why don't you travel to Romania and ask how you can help, then? Just because you don't live in that country doesn't make it any better to have the same attitude about it. Just sayin.
- NevaDieENT, on 03/26/2008, -1/+11Yea especially since it didn't take your forearm or seal your eyes shut. I almost shed a tear for those kids, lets hope someone can save future generations soon.
- giz0r, on 03/26/2008, -1/+11Oh my god that is horrible
- diggit83, on 03/26/2008, -1/+10I actually believe you are from Russia.
Im sure you are a big Putin fan too..... - iiiears, on 03/26/2008, -3/+12I saw that also. Unless the photographer grouped them excluding those with damaged right forearms.
Odd but, Is there a government subsidy for a handicapped child? - synned, on 03/26/2008, -0/+9Guilty Conscience?
- Sogui, on 03/26/2008, -4/+13Sorry I don't see anything about a growth in the local wildlife (read: radioactive wild dogs) that even begins to serve as a "moral counterbalance" to the loss of lives suffered at Chernobyl and the decades of fallout in the surrounding atmosphere.
- inactive, on 03/26/2008, -2/+10Liberals don't pollute.
