The tax credit goes to the COMPANY, which means it's up to them to decide if they want to pass the cash on down to their workers. No wonder it was "hidden". - floort, on 01/13/2009, -0/+97Hey, that guy in St Paul DESERVES $20 for riding his bike to work for an hour in the winter. brrrrr....
- BorsKaegel, on 01/13/2009, -2/+74But... can I put rockets on my bike and have it still count?
- govsucks, on 01/14/2009, -3/+59Excellent. I work out of my home. I'm gonna get up in the morning, ride my bike down the street and back and collect my 20 bucks.
- inactive, on 01/13/2009, -37/+90Share the road? Get your bike tabs! Get collision insurance!
As someone who has never owned a car, I find most bcyclists in my area to be annoying and often ignore road rules. Every Friday they have parades for bike rights, which is illegal because they have no permits and is nothing more than an impromptu "Hey lets bike through the downtown Seattle, hoging the entire freaking street and generally act like jerks!", they are doing a great job at pissing everyone off.
And they get an extra 20$ per month to be jerks. - DoctorDuckey, on 01/14/2009, -1/+39Michael Bluth will be overjoyed...
- dkietzer, on 01/14/2009, -0/+35Agreed. If you're hitting pedestrians, you're doing something wrong...
- kplo, on 04/01/2009, -10/+44They should get more than that. They're putting themselves at risk every day.
- inactive, on 01/14/2009, -0/+33Maybe you need riding lessons. I've biked to school and work in the summers for the last 15 years and have never had anything worse than a mechanical problem here and there.
- david76, on 01/14/2009, -3/+36I don't think I can take my bike on I-95 to get to work. :|
- smotpoker, on 01/14/2009, -0/+28@reaper527
It's illegal to ride on the sidewalks because of risk of hitting pedestrians and too hard to ride in the grass. Trying to drive on the edge is an option but IMO it's more dangerous because there is a worse chance of slipping off in a manner that causes you to wreck (and maybe get run over by the car) and you are less visible to people who may not be paying full attention
Personally when I skate or ride a bike anywhere, I frequently look for cars coming up behind me and move into the oncoming lane or grass if there is no sidewalk. If there is a sidewalk I usually just use that but I'm pretty sure if people start riding bikes more (or you live in an area where people already do that), police will enforce the no-riding-on-sidewalks rule
@elister
If you take the bus that $20/month won't cover the fare - sterni, on 01/14/2009, -0/+26what about if I walk?
- bollyuk, on 01/14/2009, -3/+28the health problems that you'll get more fit?
- TrancePhreak, on 01/14/2009, -2/+27yo dawg, we put a bike in yo bike so you can bike while you bike...... or something.
- Harabeck, on 01/14/2009, -2/+26Bikes are vehicles, they belong in the road by law. The exception is highways and such where only street legal motorized vehicles are allowed.
- oMeSSiaHo, on 01/14/2009, -3/+26"As someone who has never owned a car"
Implies that he bikes. You two fail! - inactive, on 01/14/2009, -3/+25yeah, fit into my tire tread
- complacentpanda, on 01/13/2009, -3/+24$20. Hmmm. Not bad if you do it year around, I guess. Might get kind of stressful depending on the traffic situations on the streets to where you work...
- Ockniel, on 01/14/2009, -1/+22What if I install a bike in my car?
- Cruelapollo, on 01/14/2009, -2/+22OMG, it's briefly cold! Global warming was a sham!
- batmanz, on 01/14/2009, -0/+18Perhaps this is news, but the most of the world does not live in southern California.
- pghtytfan, on 01/13/2009, -1/+19I wish I lived in a flat city so I could Bike around more, Pittsburgh's hills are horrible for biking into the city
- oboshoe, on 01/14/2009, -5/+22Put your bike in your car.
Then roll your bike up to your desk.
Bonus points if you act like a doosh to your coworkers for not doing enough to save the environment. - Daniel591992, on 01/14/2009, -2/+18doooooosh
- aherman, on 01/14/2009, -0/+15Back in my day, we would HAVE used the proper word.
- saucy05, on 01/14/2009, -2/+17Don't lump us all in one group. We have our own share of idiots, but majority of us are law abiding bikers. It's like saying all car drivers are illegal street racers.
- paydayloanlady, on 01/14/2009, -0/+14I would totally ride my bike to work if it wasn't 30 miles away, that's too much time in the cold for me, but more power to you if you can hang with the cold.
- m0llusk, on 01/14/2009, -1/+14one less car
- pardonmedoug, on 01/14/2009, -2/+15If you don't want bicycles in the lane you drive in, lobby your city council to create bike lanes.
Or if you want just keep bitching about it, I'm sure that will improve your and everyone else's life. - inactive, on 01/14/2009, -0/+13weather and climate aren't the same
- Locke21, on 01/14/2009, -1/+14Bikes are required by law to ride in the road unless there's a bike lane. So if you have an issue with that, take it up with your local government, not the local bikers.
- tas08, on 01/14/2009, -0/+12douche*
- say592, on 01/14/2009, -0/+11But what if you are self employed...
- xerigen, on 01/14/2009, -0/+11Chain rule is f ' (g(x)) * g '.
- pixelguru, on 01/14/2009, -0/+11Sucks that your bike got wrecked, but do consider installing a "cow catcher" on the front of your next rig.
- Valyn, on 01/14/2009, -2/+12Riding near the gutter is dangerous, becasue a lot of ass hats will try to pass you when there is not enough room. Also its tough to stay on the side and then swerve around grates and gutters that are bigger than your tires.
Riding in the middle of the lane forces cars to not try to squeeze past you. It sucks as a driver, but don't blame the bicyclist, blame the city for not having bike lanes. - sockpuppets, on 01/14/2009, -0/+10...and that's how I met your mother.
- saulmora, on 01/14/2009, -4/+14Now, if they gave cyclists something closer to the $80/month that was originally proposed, it would really be worth it, and may even convince more people to give it a try and keep it up.
- scamper22, on 01/14/2009, -5/+15Just what is this tax break for?
If you drive a car...
You are already taxed purchasing the car.
You are already taxed buying the gas for the car.
You are already taxed each year you register the car.
Seems like Cycling is its own savings. This is an example of a waste of tax money. No one is going to start cycling just to collect a rebate of 20 bucks. If I lived close enough to my work in better weather, I would definitely cycle. Basically, this tax break is just not going to change behavior at all.
You'd be better off taking this money and spending it on... I don't know... bike lanes, any other transit project.
But relax... something tells me every company is just going to claim their workers are cycling to work, just to get the money. I mean, how is the government going to check this out? Are they going to have inspector come by and count the number of people cycling to work now? Wow, legislators are truly retarded. - inactive, on 01/14/2009, -2/+12I'm in seattle too. I'm embarrassed for people to know I'm a cyclist when this is going on. This a one of the most bike friendly cities in the US. I don't know why cyclists are determined to change that.
- CreamyGoodness, on 01/14/2009, -4/+14And?
"During the interview Clark mentions the different ways companies can use the tax credit. For example, they can use the money for showers, lockers or other bike-related facilities. Or they can use it to buy their employees bike helmets, bike locks or any other bike related accouterments."
So everyone benefits from bikers biking to work. As an avid cyclist, I for one am glad to see something for us to pedal for. I'm not the lard ass eating a dozen donuts while driving my 10 mpg truck to work. Anything we can to to help the situation.
Oh and elister - you're a douche. Sure there are cyclists who are dicks and will ignore traffic laws, just as there are small dicked ass clowns with plastic balls on the back of their trucks cutting people off in traffic because they have a tiny dick. Get over it, ***** are in society, some of them ride bikes. Don't group us all in that pack. - saulmora, on 01/14/2009, -0/+9Not flat makes it awesome though. What goes up must come down! Be careful with the cars though.
- ypypjb, on 01/14/2009, -0/+9Dugg for wind chill of minus Wasilla
- BCPneumatics, on 01/14/2009, -0/+9If you need two seats riding a bike's not a bad idea.
- DrivebyGroper, on 01/14/2009, -0/+9And work from home? :P
- Aros, on 01/14/2009, -0/+9I should run this by my superiors. I got a hershey's bar and a $5.00 KFC coupon for riding my bike to work from their lame Ride-share program. Nothing like greasy chicken smothered in chocolate after a bike ride!
Riding in an aircraft also grants you "credit", according to them. - jeexbit, on 01/14/2009, -0/+9Folks who work at home should totally get a tax break...
- Kbriggs, on 01/14/2009, -1/+10I've been riding for 2 1/2 years now, and I've been hit by 1 car, and that's about it. I knocked a tooth loose doing it, but it was also the first two months I was riding. Learning to pay attention while you ride is a big part of not hitting people or getting hit.
- drifter, on 01/14/2009, -1/+9dude you talk about the male genitals a lot.
- oboshoe, on 01/14/2009, -0/+8hmmm.
So I don't collect $20, I just spend $20 less.
Which means that when it all said and done, I've got an extra $20.
Gosh, that is totally different...........
Thank you Congress! -
