Badass Anti-Whaling Stealth Boat [PICS]

life.com — Earthrace, the Sea Shepherd Conservation Society's new high-tech anti-whaling powerboat, rests in Auckland Harbor head of its imminent deployment for Perth, and then the Southern Ocean. The 24-meter trimaran has paint which deflects radar waves, so can approach Japanese whaling vessels almost unseen.

    The captain is a an old, dangerous fool. He risked everyone's lives by sailing into ice in a boat that should never even be near ice, and he rammed another vessel risking lives on both ships.

Take a small boat with the occupants sealed inside, a history of mechanical breakdowns and a small radar cross section, paint it black so it can't be easily seen by anyone and then sail it through dangerous seas where a rescue is hard to mount at the best of times. Then, for that little extra something, use it to harass and possibly ram much larger and more robust ships.

    When these guys break down and start to sink, they'll be trapped inside the boat because of all the ice that's caked on the outside and nobody will be able to find them and come to the rescue.

    They just want to be martyrs.

    Despite the small size she is amazingly comfortable in rough seas - capable of having something like 5m of water above the windscreen.

    She was silver then and didn't look quite as hardcore as she does here.

    It's an amazing engineering achievement, that boat.

  • JKAL, on 11/07/2009, -45/+75That's because it's not the boat that makes a difference it's the crew, the crew of the Sea Shepherd are a bunch of cowards that only attack weak targets, trying to look like heroes, they are not doing this to save whales, they do this to feed their egos.
    Another greater cause of whale & other sea life deaths is the use of high tech naval radar techonology mainly from subs, these are killing sea life in the thousands, all gone to waste, not even consumed.
    But you will not see these Shepherd cowards attacking a naval vessel anytime soon, they will only attack ships that will not return attack.

But its worth noting it has had _significant_ problems since being launched, having broken down numerous times due to mechanical problems when it was doing the circumnavigation. Not the ship I would want to be on in the ***** Antartic ocean.

Braving physical danger with little reward is an ancient definition of bravery. Would it be "brave" of them to use explosives and RPGs to systematically murder whaling crews? Sea Shepard tries to harass whalers with non lethal means where lethal ones would be vastly more effective.

    According to the IUCN Red List, Mink whales are considered of "Least Concern" from a conservation perspective.
    Bottlenose dolphins are also not considered an endangered species.
