Austin City Council declines to invest in 2 nuclear reactors

statesman.com — Reviving memories of the cost overruns and bypassed deadlines that plagued the last era of nuclear plant construction, Austin Energy, the city-owned utility, has told the council that the expansion of the South Texas Project in Matagorda County could go $1 billion over budget and take longer than expected to build.

    It seems like every year we hear of local cities pulling out bonds to get sports stadiums built to bring in professional teams. But then when something a city/county really needs comes along, "oh no, couldn't possibly outlay extra money for that... no no., can't go into a wee bit of debt for a nuke plant... no way."
