I'M A SHAAARK
SUCK MY DIIIIIIIICK
I'M A SHAAAAAAAARK! - Surferess, on 11/11/2008, -1/+18We need all the animals. You don't have to like sharks, but you should appreciate their place in the ecosystem.
- Ggoldfish, on 11/11/2008, -1/+13Sharks are apex predators. When an apex predator is removed from it's ecosystem it has an adverse affect on the whole system, which will eventually have an impact on our lives because the fishing will change, or disappear, among other consequences. We need to be better stewards of our world.
- gcsmit6, on 11/11/2008, -1/+12there is a lot more than just shark extinction at stake. check out this movie, it's amazing.

- serif69, on 11/12/2008, -2/+8I detect future greatness for this comment.
- filovirus, on 11/11/2008, -5/+11I like sharks. Can we stop effing up the planet already.
- chemam, on 11/12/2008, -1/+7STOP KILLING THEM!
Fishermen in Galapagos and Costa Rica catch all sorts of sharks only to cut their fins and dump them back into the ocean, the sharks simply drown to death. - AltF3, on 11/11/2008, -2/+8I honestly couldn't understand that broken english.
- YourNameHere1, on 11/11/2008, -3/+8Go surfing in a wetsuit made of meat.
- ScottMcIntyre, on 11/11/2008, -2/+7This is one story where a comment saying 'cute' isn't an option.... (except I just did, d'oh!)
- frieddonuts, on 11/11/2008, -2/+7It appears that humans are a new kind of apex predator- one that doesn't bring stability, but instead destroys ecoosystems at every rung of the food chain.
- PeppermintPig, on 11/11/2008, -4/+8Over 99 percent of the world's animals have gone extinct. It's a fact. WE ARE ALL GOING TO DIE!
- inactive, on 11/12/2008, -3/+7The Asian food market is disgusting. We're draining the oceans for what? So some rich people can have some mercury laced shark-fin soup? The fishing industry needs to be monitored much more heavily than it currently is. Terrible.
This doesn't just go for sharks - but for every bit of aquatic life. So many species are subject to overfishing. - cl2yp71c, on 11/11/2008, -3/+6Say, if an endangered shark attacks you, may you still kill it?
- Langford, on 11/12/2008, -2/+5Probably, but the harpoon you were carrying may look suspicious.
- netneutrality, on 11/12/2008, -2/+4Does this mean the other 75% won't die out? If so why do we need to worry about the 25% that will?
- angryredplanet, on 11/12/2008, -2/+4Your timely advice despite the scientific warnings advising (and governmental ignorance of) zero catch limits? You clearly have little understanding of oceanic ecology or of the importance of a hierarchical food chain.
Sharks already have outlived most species, having been around for 450,000,000 years relatively unchanged. They are an apex predator and have been the driving force of evolution for nearly all other species on the planet. In the last 30 years their numbers have plummeted - a conservative estimate of 100,000,000 sharks are taken every year - far more than are born. The hunter is now the hunted with an impossibly short amount of time to adapt. This is a very important issue, much more than your being able to surf. - ldner77, on 11/12/2008, -2/+4Sharks, You have no chance to survive make your time.
- mrcabnit, on 11/12/2008, -2/+4*****' karma.
- YourNameHere1, on 11/12/2008, -0/+2I've surfed behind dolphins on waves (Frisco pier, Outer Banks NC, Hurricane Gabriel 1988), and I've seen so many dolphins swim past me, under me, and around me..... About a month before those shark stories there was a pod of dolphins that swam up to me at Kelly's cove.... I could of touched the dolphins because they swam so close to me. (I didn't because I didn't want to bother them)
I've been barked at by aggressive sea lions that didn't like me surfing where they were eating abalone off of the reef..... (Juan creek Mendocino CA 1996)
And all of my East Coast shark experiences were with mako sharks, blue sharks, sand tiger sharks, and possibly one hammerhead. I had this one 6 foot (but real skinny) blue shark swim up to me aggressively and almost hit me with its tail. It was at Salvo near Rodanthe in the Outer Banks. I just laughed and paddled in.
None of this bothered me. But once you see a shark underwater (and not in a shark-cage), that is bigger than my Honda Accord.... it gets scary.
People get attacked all of the time in the "Red Triangle". I've surfed the reefs at Davenport Landing, and Waddell creek, and all of those beach breaks between SF and Santa Cruz like Montara.... it gets spooky out there in the fog and cold dark silty water. It's even worse when surfing in Humboldt County, Mendocino, and Sonoma (Goat Rock left by the Russian river). - Rowwen, on 11/12/2008, -1/+3Sharks rarely attack people. Driving to a beach is more dangerous than being there.
But if I see a shark I'm still not going in the water, hehe.
...I'd actually be afraid if I saw dolphins near me...even if they're said to save people from shark attacks, sometimes they kill for pleasure. - MicrosoftBob, on 11/12/2008, -0/+1Quint doesn't have a Boston accent. More Irish than anything.
- subterfuge, on 11/12/2008, -2/+3if you are attacked by a shark, you must first wait and get a good look at it so as to determine whether or not it is a member of an endangered species. if the shark does, indeed, belong to an endangered species, you are legally required to allow it to devour you.

- Rowwen, on 11/16/2008, -0/+1I care about sharks because they're misunderstood by others.
I don't really like the notion that we don't belong where other animals live.
I'm suprised by how you're sick of shark apologist AND still say, "Stop eating us!!!" We're the ones who eat and/or kill more of them than they do us.
Now I do believe that we need a solution to keep them away from beaches, but even so it wouldn't be done in many beaches since shark attacks are rare. - Dustmuffins, on 11/12/2008, -1/+2http://digg.com/users/shalubaibe/history/comments
lol - Beatmiser, on 11/11/2008, -4/+5Shark in the photo sure has an adorable 'Don't kill wittle old me I'm smiling at you!' expression.
=( - Rowwen, on 11/15/2008, -0/+1http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gAyDDUthJAw&feature ... LOL
Okay, I've never heard of dolphins actually attacking people, but I have heard of incidents where dolphins attack porpoises and such that do so without any possible territorial or food related reason. - Rowwen, on 11/12/2008, -2/+3idiot...
- mikbunn, on 11/12/2008, -1/+2Source on dolphin malice, please.
- zushiba, on 11/12/2008, -1/+2Finally we accomplished something!
- topgigmedia, on 11/12/2008, -2/+3"Cage goes in the wahtah. Divah goes in the cage. Shahhhhhhks in the wahtah."
- subterfuge, on 11/12/2008, -2/+3dugg for truth
- Zervaman, on 11/12/2008, -1/+2Yeah, that won't ***** up the life cycles of all species that rely directly/indirectly on insects and won't affect all the plant species that rely on insects for pollination. Good ***** idea!
- frankb00th, on 11/12/2008, -1/+2youre a ***** imbecile
- reticulate, on 11/12/2008, -3/+4This is how memes are created.
- jennagen, on 11/12/2008, -1/+1if by amazing you mean the most horribly depressing doc ever made..
as far as im concerned they already are extinct - Greenergrass, on 11/12/2008, -1/+1Should be urgent european ministers come to reason at the mid-december.
Good link here too:

It is European Shark Week:
http://www.europeansharkweek.org/ - PamLovesSpam, on 11/12/2008, -1/+1Ecosystem imbalances are really nasty business. Predators must always exist.
- Greenergrass, on 11/12/2008, -1/+1Yeahhhhh, good movie dealing about the humans'indifference.. 9O % of sharks have disappeared in 50 years.
- Violette888, on 11/14/2008, -0/+0The only comment worth reading.
The rest of the comments make all of you look like dumb idiots.
I agree with Floronic - it's all about biodiversity and the delicate balance of ecosystems. One day something seemingly as insignificant as the extinction of a shark species may lead to our demise. - Setherex, on 11/12/2008, -1/+1How bout just cockroaches
- ChaseUtleyWampa, on 11/12/2008, -1/+1I hope they go extinct...what the ***** did they ever do for me?
- palehorse864, on 11/12/2008, -1/+1Just when you thought it was dangerous to go in the water!
- chodges4, on 11/12/2008, -1/+1i hate sharks too, so much so i cried in that movie open water
even so, i'm still smart enough to realize you can't let animals disappear from the food chain just 'cus they're scary.
did you ever take a bio class? - floronicman, on 11/12/2008, -2/+2Idiots, its not just about sharks, ray and fish at risk. Sharks are key to maintaining the ecosystem. Once one level breaks down, it domino effects down to the next level [and so on]. There is already enough evidence of world wide aquatic breakdown and its a damn shame that we still have these stories coming out. Its very sad.
