Let me sum up the average digg user.
- Wow, that why it's so cold right now
- It's just a conspiracy to tax you more
- I'm ok, I don't live by the coast, I won't be affected 1 bit
- Oh it's just another report by yet another scientist (what's that, number 1000) that is funded by an alarmist group so they have to say the climate is changing. - sneaker98, on 04/07/2009, -3/+24Don't forget "Duh, ice melts in the summer!"
Gee, I guess NASA didn't know about that one. - jodhas, on 04/07/2009, -0/+20Can people stop being sarcastic? I don't know which side you're on! =)
- overtoke, on 04/06/2009, -6/+25go read a book
- vikingcoder, on 04/07/2009, -5/+21The world is larger than your area of it.
- anstice85, on 04/07/2009, -6/+22No way. Global warming is fake because.. *licks fingertip, sticks in air* it's cold, see? Plus ALGORE ALGORE ALGORE
(was I first?) - anstice85, on 04/07/2009, -2/+17Dear diablozx9,
Weather and climate are two different things.
Sincerely,
Your third grade teacher - freedomischaos, on 04/07/2009, -1/+14I see the Artic is on thin ice.
- anonymous1986, on 04/07/2009, -1/+14Buried for not knowing the difference between weather and climate.
- anstice85, on 04/07/2009, -0/+13Yes, I'm sure none of the scientists studying this realized what season it is. You should call them up and alert them. But had you read the article, you'd see that they're not morons and take that into account.
- YojanV, on 04/07/2009, -2/+14@ syntaxgs... are you being sarcastic, or are you so badly educated you simply can't type? Because if the latter case is true, you're hardly the greatest advocate for the anti climate change group.
- inactive, on 04/07/2009, -0/+12I consider colours to be teapots.
- swerwerwer, on 04/07/2009, -3/+14What would anyone possibly gain from claiming the ice caps are melting if it weren't true? If anything the people who would gain from this whole situation are those who want us to maintain the status quo, continue living only for todays profit rather than the future, and recklessly consume all of the resources we have left (ie oil/car companies, timber industry ect along with our behavior which has resulted in such a bad economy). I dont understand why people seem to think global warming means that they wont have snow in the winter over a period of a few years? It is clear that half of these people have absolutely no knowledge of science, our climate, or how the earth works. It doesn't matter what you call "global warming" you can't ignore the fact that WE humans have been depleting our natural resources faster in the last 100 years then we did over the past 5,000 on top of increasing population and the loss of fresh water this is a concern for everyone and it is not as simplistic as "the earth is getting hotter."
- anonymous1986, on 04/07/2009, -2/+12Reading usually helps you know, the first paragraph in the article states:
"The latest Arctic sea ice data from NASA and the National Snow and Ice Data Center show that the decade-long trend of shrinking sea ice cover is continuing. New evidence from satellite observations also shows that the ice cap is thinning as well"
The second states:
"Arctic sea ice works like an air conditioner for the global climate system. Ice naturally cools air and water masses, plays a key role in ocean circulation, and reflects solar radiation back into space. In recent years, Arctic sea ice has been declining at a surprising rate." - sneaker98, on 04/07/2009, -3/+13It scares me that you're completely serious about what you've just said.
- sneaker98, on 04/07/2009, -0/+9>>"-Only 30 years of data to compare to, we don't have any clue what it really means, if anything"
Wrong. We know, through taking ice samples in the arctic regions, what our atmosphere should look like going back hundreds of thousands of years.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/File:Carbon_Dioxide_4 ...
Yeah, our planet is cyclical. And it sure as hell isn't following the normal cyclical pattern. Not by a long shot.
Good lord, get a *****' clue. - hawkspur, on 04/07/2009, -2/+11RTFA.
- beatle42, on 04/07/2009, -0/+8@woodrow of course climate and weather are related, but only in the same way that any individual throw of the dice in craps is related to the long term profit of the casino. It doesn't matter if you win big on any particular roll, the long term trend is still in the house's favor. Similarly, it doesn't matter what the weather on any particular day/week/season is, the long term trend is clear.
- wrathchilde, on 04/07/2009, -2/+10Interesting point added by the Washington Post coverage: http://www.washingtonpost.com/wp-dyn/content/artic ...
"The new evidence -- including satellite data showing that the average multiyear wintertime sea ice cover in the Arctic in 2005 and 2006 was nine feet thick, a significant decline from the 1980s -- contradicts data cited in widely circulated reports by Washington Post columnist George F. Will that sea ice in the Arctic has not significantly declined since 1979." - anstice85, on 04/07/2009, -2/+10Climate change is the correct term, actually. The media latched onto "global warming" in the 70's and hasn't let it go.
- WasabiBomb, on 04/07/2009, -0/+8Okay. Now who's going to be making money off those carbon taxes? I mean, you're claiming this is all one big conspiracy... so who's behind it all?
Oh, you don't have a name? Just some shadowy "They"? Well, there's a shocker.
On the other hand, Exxon (and Big Oil in general) stands to *keep* making a lot of money by convincing people that climate change isn't happening. You know, just like tobacco companies suppressed evidence of the health issues caused by smoking. Hell, they've already been caught attempting to pay for anti-AGW papers.
Now, which conspiracy theory is more likely?
Oh, and before I forget- ManBearPig! AlGore! Natural Cycles! Other Planets! That about cover it? - thedinomeister, on 04/07/2009, -0/+7The amount of ice in the arctic is based on a wind function, and would be false to state that the area is warming up on it's own from CO2. It all has to do with the type of regime that sets up wrt wind direction and whether it passes over the pacific or land before it reaches the northern areas. If it passes over the pacific, then we see increased ice thicknesses like we have seen in the past-- thus keeping the region cool. However, since satellite measurements began, winds have been dominating the region from the siberian side-- thus bring in drier air masses that produce less snow -- compound those effects over a large timeframe and you will notice that the ice that melts in the summer gets only part of that replaced during the winter. This in addition to the albedo of the open water can speed up the effect. I doubt that the increase of CO2 from 250 parts per million to 380 parts per million will have that much of an effect in such a short timeframe.
watch this to see how ice behaves in the arctic: http://arctic.atmos.uiuc.edu/cryosphere/arctic.sea ... - wrathchilde, on 04/07/2009, -3/+10The article says nothing about the effects of the current Spring season. Did you read it? If you even skimmed it, you should have caught this important statement:
"Thickness is important, especially in the winter, because it is the best overall indicator of the health of the ice cover. As the ice cover in the Arctic grows thinner, it grows more vulnerable to melting in the summer." - fatfreddyscat, on 04/07/2009, -2/+8He who controls the ice controls the universe!
- dikky, on 04/07/2009, -1/+7there is a difference between global weather averages and local climate

- anonymous1986, on 04/07/2009, -2/+7From the new scientist article: http://www.newscientist.com/article/dn11642
There have been claims that warming on Mars and Pluto are proof that the recent warming on Earth is caused by an increase in solar activity, and not by greenhouse gases. But we can say with certainty that, even if Mars, Pluto or any other planets have warmed in recent years, it is not due to changes in solar activity.
The Sun's energy output has not increased since direct measurements began in 1978 (see Climate myth special: Global warming is down to the Sun, not humans). If increased solar output really was responsible, we should be seeing warming on all the planets and their moons, not just Mars and Pluto.
Furthermore read this article from NASA:
How Low Can It Go? Sun Plunges into the Quietest Solar Minimum in a Century
http://www.nasa.gov/topics/solarsystem/features/so ... - anonymous1986, on 04/07/2009, -1/+6You don't seem to realise that too much of something is bad, in this case excess CO2 in the atmosphere causes a stronger greenhouse effect.
- SpinningHead, on 04/07/2009, -0/+5Oh, I think that makes him the perfect advocate for the warming deniers.
- leandrotami, on 04/07/2009, -3/+8I'm getting tired of reading so much denial on Digg regarding climate change! I'm starting to believe that those people that seem to resist reason are in fact being paid to uninform, or perhaps are the most unintellectual people I have ever meet in my life. I can't really think of other explanations.

- magibeg, on 04/07/2009, -1/+6If you notice most of the time they seem to have their own theories built up upon disproved data controlled by institutes funded by oil companies while claiming that virtual every scientist in the field of climate science all over the world are taking part in a massive international collaboration to charge American citizens more taxes.
- wrathchilde, on 04/07/2009, -3/+7Commenting without reading is embarrassing, no?
"...do that every year" The article wrote about ice thinning in the winter. Do you really think it does that every year? Then refreezes... when? This is simple observation. The sea ice extent is lessening each summer, and the sea ice volume is decreasing each winter. - inactive, on 04/07/2009, -3/+7Ghendric, ooohw, where to start... Let's start by saying you are a complete and utter douchebag. If by lack of consensus you mean not EVERY scientist agrees with global warming. I'd say DUH! Of course not. When have you ever seen a big group of humans agree on anything. (think of all those ***** up people that believe in genesis and not evolution) Of course there are scientist that don't agree but I'd say that 98% of them agree there is something bad going on.
Why can't you see that there are significant problems with our way of consumption. We are polluting our seas, air and land. Cutting down forests, forcing more and more species into extinction and generally wasting our precious natural and mineral recources. And Global Warming is just one of the concequences of our failing ways. If you can't see the problem there it can only mean you are an utter retard. I think most scientists could agree on that - Dweller99, on 04/07/2009, -1/+5-algore

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ice-nine - anstice85, on 04/07/2009, -2/+5Err, you'd think that climate scientists would want to discover a result that DOESN'T indicate that we're screwed. I don't think you realize that the climate consensus came from an extensive process of review, a process which damn near every skeptic has refused to participate in.
- Enterres, on 04/07/2009, -0/+3Every try to convince a hard core cigarette smoker that smoking in public is immoral? It's difficult to convince any addict - to a drug, or to a wasteful lifestyle - that their addiction is hurting themselves and others. Usually it takes an intervention on the personal scale, but in this case it's going to have to destroy billions of people before we as a whole change.
- LEL2007, on 04/18/2009, -0/+3Maybe ... If we all were to take a breath every other time instead of every time we could cut CO2 in half and reverse global warming. But if CO2's the culprit, what's causing the heat up of Mars? The Sun? How-bout we just shut down civilization just in case algore and all those scientists are right.
- SpinningHead, on 04/07/2009, -0/+3You say population control like its a bad thing.
- MerchantofPanic, on 04/07/2009, -0/+3A message for the ice - harden the ***** up.

- gdha, on 04/07/2009, -0/+3Well yeah, we've known this for some time. Honestly, it is only a matter of time before it is all ocean.
- magibeg, on 04/07/2009, -1/+4"Maybe the ice ages? I mean if it weren't natural we would still all be living in an ice age right?"
That's a horribly uneducated statement. What you're describe is natural variances that happen over time. What scientists describe (and why they're making a big deal out of it) is a change from the natural variance. I don't know why people think they know something that scientists studying the field don't. If you happen to know something they don't then i suggest you publish a scientific paper about it. - WasabiBomb, on 04/07/2009, -0/+3@ozydingo
