- russ3, on 01/06/2009, -1/+7If 10 turbines can only run half of the public area lighting, maybe that suggests we've gone a little crazy with indoor lighting.
- NoTiG, on 01/06/2009, -1/+5For a second I though this was going to be about designing buildings in such a way so that if you had several buildings in a row (like on a street) it somehow guided the wind and built it up so you could generate power in just one place. But I guess that wouldn't work.
- 2of8, on 01/06/2009, -3/+7I ***** hate how the biggest criticism of wind power is how it looks. Seriously, is that what matters most to people? Not saving money, not reducing pollutants in the atmosphere, not reducing dependence on foreign fuels. But what an "eyesore" wind turbines are.
(I won't even get into ranting on how much I disagree with that. I think wind turbines are a good statement of intelligence of a population/government) - wehrmanweb, on 01/06/2009, -1/+5I work for an Architectural firm and we had a rep come in and talk about these... What it came down to is these are more for image than function. Sure they create power but the wind has to be blowing in the correct direction, they work better on taller buildings they cost a lot.
- ousthouse, on 01/06/2009, -0/+4safety > energy savings
- inactive, on 01/06/2009, -1/+410 kw of wind power per tower block - yea the planet is saved !
I thought this was going to be about a building that had a special shape to blow all the litter away. - blur13, on 01/05/2009, -1/+4The Bronx huh? How much you want to bet someone rigs it to where they get free electric? ...I kid!
- IllBeBack, on 01/05/2009, -2/+5Half? That's pretty damned good.
- emjaymj, on 01/06/2009, -0/+3Half of the COMMON AREAS. Making it cover only a tiny fraction of the entire building's actual usage. Still... it's a start I guess.
- 2of8, on 01/06/2009, -1/+4I think well-oiled rotating things don't make a lot of noise.
- jaygeeze, on 01/06/2009, -0/+3This is such a simple-in-concept idea: buildings create massive wind tunnels. The problem is execution, I don't see big wind turbines taking up precious real estate in any city any time soon.
- graeh, on 01/06/2009, -0/+2I thought the same.
I dated this crazy smart girl for a bit who was doing aeronautical engineering at uni, she once told me that at said uni two of the multi-story buildings created an unexpected interaction with regular local wind patterns causing vortices to form between the buildings and buffet them to a structurally unexpected level. So I totally expected this story to be about someone doing it deliberately to funnel regular winds from a large area to a small area between buildings that could power windmills or something :( - russ3, on 01/06/2009, -1/+3Thats what i thought, and still believe it would work.
- inactive, on 01/06/2009, -1/+3I meant the sound of the wind breaking when the turbine spins. There would be a little bit of noise, when the wind breaks, right?
- diggydougie, on 01/07/2009, -0/+2Cost: 15000, savings: 1200/yr.
Breakeven in 12 years. Let's take a look at the condition of these things in 12 years. Outdoor equipment is usually not in very good shape after 12 years.
What this means is that the energy is NOT free until after the breakeven point. Whatever life you get after that point IS real free energy.
Also you need to factor in interest on the initial investment. But that would be offset by increasing energy costs on the savings side. - MokaPot, on 01/06/2009, -0/+2I just did the same logic. woa. Great minds think alike.
- inactive, on 01/05/2009, -3/+4Will the turbines be insulated so that residents won't be hearing loud turbine fans spinning throughout the day and night? That would be quite annoying.
- Cancerous, on 01/05/2009, -1/+2Even environment and savings aside, I want them simply because they are ridiculously cool looking.
- ebcreasoner, on 01/06/2009, -2/+3Not to worry though, Bush will be blown away naturally by Hurricane Barack.
- 2of8, on 01/06/2009, -1/+2Question. Why can't I reply to your post?
Answer to your question: I don't know. I've never been close to one of these small turbines. It'd be nice to find out, though. - Pezza131214, on 01/06/2009, -1/+2It'd be cool if buildings were built with channels on the roof to increase the wind-speed before it got to the turbines.
- lornali, on 01/06/2009, -1/+2Great idea
- thayanmarsh, on 01/06/2009, -1/+2While the savings might not seem huge compared to building the complex, the turbine will pay for itself before the building will.
- CarlT, on 03/05/2009, -0/+0Not to mention maintenance costs. However i do beleive the only way we can ever hope to get free energy is to let projects like this happen, because they pay for research and development of more efficient models!
In the UK cheap clean energy is hard to come by but http://www.uwpays.com is one company that does just that
