- Diggopolis, on 12/01/2008, -1/+23I've had the chance to watch different shows on the Discovery Channel and PBS this past year about Antarctica and it's surprising how much life exists down there... and how far some of it travels every year between it's summer and winter residences (so to speak). Thanks for the article, Sungoddes. :)
- radicaldementia, on 12/01/2008, -2/+17In a way this isn't that surprising. The Galapagos are a very small chain of islands, whereas Antarctica is an entire continent. It's not like Antarctica is some newly discovered oasis of life, it's pretty desolate, but it's got a lot more space. Still, it's pretty amazing that so many species can survive in such a seemingly inhospitable environment.
- acmaurer, on 12/01/2008, -1/+16the census is a great idea - especially because they found five new species! very cool!
- Tynan, on 12/01/2008, -2/+11Galapagos: 10,000 square km
Antarctica: 14,000,000 square km
Is anyone surprised? - gregdigg, on 12/01/2008, -0/+5His question (which was more rhetorical than actually being a question) wasn't really "holier-than-thou," which would be displaying an attitude of superior virtue, it was more pretentious and condescending.
- hnazareth16, on 12/01/2008, -2/+6I'd love to visit Antarctica for this very reason. It would be such a welcomed change from the pigeons of New York City.
- derekmas10, on 12/01/2008, -0/+4dugg for superior virtue.
- york2600, on 12/01/2008, -0/+3The amazing thing is there is so much life in Antarctica that has never been inventoried. These scientists looked at life on the Antarctic peninsula nearby the tip of South America. This is very far from the polar region where most of the life in far below permanent sea ice. There has been some amount of diving done further in towards the pole, particularly in the Ross Ice Shelf region. There's a limit to how far a human can dive and that's really kept us from seeing what's down there. There are some really great NSF projects going on right now to build underwater vehicles to explore hundreds if not thousands of feet down. There are some amazing scientists working on this stuff and the footage they've brought back is spectacular. I'm sure some of it will make it into some of the BBC, NOVA, and National Geographic films in the next few years.

- york2600, on 12/01/2008, -0/+3There's plenty of life under the sea ice in Antarctica. You only need coastlines for mammals. There's lots of underwater regions that have yet to be explored.
- nomadofthehills, on 12/01/2008, -0/+2How the hell is that not common knowledge?
- Danktolker, on 12/01/2008, -1/+3If so many different species can evolve and sustain life in such unfavorable conditions, I think it's within the reason to assert that sentient aliens from other worlds are reading this right now.....
- DannyTMurphy, on 12/01/2008, -1/+3If you kidnap me and I survive those 6 months, I'll be keeping a few bullets for you when you come to pick me up.
- max420, on 12/02/2008, -0/+1haha
- bubba9999, on 12/01/2008, -0/+1Make them type a series of numbers into a computer every 20 minutes...
- flashingcurser, on 12/01/2008, -0/+1I thought that the important thing about the Galapagos was that they had a large number of UNIQUE species that could be found nowhere else. The article states that Antarctica has more species and more diverse species but it doesn't say that the species are unique to Antarctica.
- BuddingMonkey, on 12/01/2008, -1/+2For the sake of all of us let's hope they don't get rickrolled.
- Yeyui, on 12/03/2008, -0/+1Title should be: Small Antarctic Archipelago Has More Species Than Galapagos
That would have helped all the people commenting correctly but irrelevantly about Antarctica being really big. - slapthemonkey, on 12/02/2008, -0/+1Keep hunters out and allow these species to live and procreate
- Jareth86, on 12/01/2008, -0/+1Volcanoes would be a welcome change from NYC.
- Yeyui, on 12/01/2008, -0/+1RTFA: These species are all located on or near the South Orkney Islands. "In total, these island have a surface of about 620 km², most of which is covered with ice." [wikipedia]
So yes, I am surprised that an antarctic archipelago has more biodiversity than an equatorial one with more than 12 times the land mass. - ssfwestlife, on 12/02/2008, -0/+1cute penguins
- Coffeedemon, on 12/01/2008, -1/+1Bah.... I've been talking up "Survivor: Baffin Island" for years and no one will listen.
- FindTheGreen, on 12/02/2008, -1/+1At the risk of being repetitive, Antarctica is huge, the Galapagos are not, shocking results. Although the inventory will provide meaningful data in future climate studies, so it is a great idea.
- york2600, on 12/01/2008, -1/+1You'd just be trading the Pigeons for Skuas. Skuas are worse. They'll dive bomb you for food and they're a protected species so all you can do is run.
- petebot, on 12/01/2008, -1/+1Does this include aliens alien capable of absorbing and perfectly imitating other life-forms?
- inactive, on 12/01/2008, -3/+2i just found out there are no reptiles and snakes in antarctica, courtesy of our lunchroom bulletin board
- nomadofthehills, on 12/01/2008, -4/+2 Antarctica- 5,400,000 square miles. Galapagos- 4,897 square miles.
Hmmm.... - outinreno, on 12/01/2008, -3/+1Yea I saw that one... http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0443473/
- Tynan, on 12/01/2008, -3/+1I sense a reality TV show. A good one, finally!
- whoizthedrizzle, on 12/01/2008, -2/+0a gun?
make it interesting. - inactive, on 12/01/2008, -3/+1penguin the new mountain goat? or bacon?
- freezerburn666, on 12/01/2008, -3/+1wwe called, they want their movie plot back
- Rudegar, on 12/01/2008, -4/+1i for one welcome our new "the thing" and "elder things and albino penguins" overloards
if i had just gotten an edgar allan poe arthur gordon pym ref into that i would be all set - akchrs, on 12/01/2008, -7/+4I wonder how much disease, germs, etc. the scientists introduced to the area and are going to blame on global warming when the animals die.
- derekmas10, on 12/01/2008, -5/+2and how many of each of those square km are covered with Ice and morasses, etc?
Perhaps if you did a coastline analysis your holier-than-thou question might hold more water, but it doesn't. - tostrye, on 12/01/2008, -5/+1"Antarctica Has More Species Than Galapagos"- thats what she said.
- max420, on 12/01/2008, -7/+2The Galapagos are still awesome. I've always thought it would be interesting to kidnap various people, and then drop them off at different places on the islands. Give them a map, some water and a weapon. Hide a few weapon and supply caches on the island, and let the people know that if they can survive on the islands for 6 months, they will be given a huge sum of money should they survive the ordeal.
But to make things interesting, if they run into any of the other "competitors", they can kill them for bonus points. Kind of like that "Battle Royale" movie, but instead of Japanese teenagers with guns, it could be rich kidnapped business men with guns...'
Oh, and yeah Antarctica is cool too...
