Another silicon valley? - The rise of solar energy

economist.com — Traditional solar cells are made of silicon, like computer chips, and for the same reason. They rely on that element ’s properties as a semiconductor, in which negatively charged electrons and positively charged “holes” move around and carry a current as they do so.
