An Underwater Lake at the Bottom of the Ocean watch!
youtube.com — The sight of a lake at the bottom of the ocean is simply amazing. Brine pools are large areas of brine on the ocean basin. These pools are concentrations of water having an extremely high salinity as compared to the surrounding ocean, caused by the motion of large salt deposits through salt tectonics.

- Adam87, on 02/21/2008, -1/+169I have seen this series a few times and recent a friend of mine bought the Planet Earth/Blue Planet set and it is awesome. I highly recommend if you have any interest in nature or environmental science. Really amazing what they say at the end, how we have only explored 1% of the ocean floor, incredible how much work there is still to be done.
- sakuraz, on 02/21/2008, -5/+82I love David Attenborough's works.

- DiggzDE, on 02/21/2008, -1/+4Whenever I get my (null) HD-DVD (null) Blu-Ray player, I plan for these series to be some of my first purchases.
- Andia83, on 02/21/2008, -0/+1Planet Earth was incredible, but I've always loved the Blue Planet series the most. The ocean fascinates me, especially life on the ocean floor, and things like this.
- 0ceanic, on 02/22/2008, -0/+3if it is salty, why is it not called an underwater sea?
- sakuraz, on 02/21/2008, -5/+82I love David Attenborough's works.

- neuens07, on 02/21/2008, -2/+25I wonder if underwater lakes can have underwater ponds...
- bosssmiley, on 02/21/2008, -0/+15What, nested one inside another? Each successive pool having a higher level of chemical concentration and ever stranger lifeforms. That would be weirdly cool.

- theragu40, on 02/21/2008, -1/+13Agreed. In some ways, I kind of feel like the deep sea is even more intriguing than outer space. We can search for life in outer space, but it's so vast it's difficult to make any real progress. On the other hand, you have the deep sea which is almost entirely unexplored, certainly has new and wondrous lifeforms that we can't even imagine, and is right here on our doorstep. I find it completely fascinating.
- FutureGuy, on 02/21/2008, -2/+3They could have told me this was Europa (Jupiter's moon) and I might have belived, awesome. Planet Earth series is a masterpiece, kudos to Discovery.

- sharpie45, on 02/21/2008, -0/+33Amazing stuff. I'm surprised Blue Planet didn't get the recognition that Planet Earth did. Just as good in my opinion. I think some of the footage might overlap, that could be why.
- Sucka27, on 02/21/2008, -0/+4I thought Blue Planet was better because the U.S. got Sigourney Weaver on the voice over for P.E. She can't hold a candle to D.A.
- 1gunners4, on 02/21/2008, -0/+1Weaver isn't the voice on the DVD/HD-DVD/Blu-Rays

- LogicBomB, on 02/21/2008, -0/+4So you guys smoke too or genuinly enjoy the show? I only ask because all my friends who like the show smoke and to be 100% honest I've never seen it.
- elementop, on 02/21/2008, -0/+4Love the show, but don't smoke.
OTOH, I *do* have a six year old daughter, and Sponge Bob is vastly better than a lot of the other stuff she likes to watch. Or maybe I just never grew up :)- adoxtater, on 02/22/2008, -0/+1+1 I couldn't agree more. You described my situation perfectly. I too have a 6yr old girl an genuinely enjoy the show. Much better than the other ***** she watches LOL
- Blandyman, on 02/21/2008, -0/+1My girlfriend is 17, but she acts like a 9 year old half the time, and I actually have a 9 year old sister... we love to watch the show. My sister likes all the annoying (though funny) bits and slapstick comedy, while my girlfriend and I love that AND the puns and homosexual undertones.
- elementop, on 02/21/2008, -0/+4Love the show, but don't smoke.
- staxofmax, on 02/21/2008, -1/+1I was thinking Snorks instead.
- SlimFastForYou, on 02/21/2008, -0/+1I thought it was sort of interesting that the lake was brine. It's the same stuff that is a byproduct of desalinization - it poses a minor barrier to desalinization being done on a more wide scale basis. If this substance and methane and pressure could support these lifeforms we could build aquariums for them. Hell, if we had a lot of brine we'd have a lot of seafood too :).
- kianat, on 02/21/2008, -1/+9ُُThat will make nice under water weekends!

- RobotBuddha, on 02/22/2008, -0/+1I second that shock. And insert a feeling of betrayal that my brain is wasting memory on plotlines from GI Joe.
- sithlordoflanc, on 02/21/2008, -0/+2And the Joes and Cobras were actually looking for heavy water for a superweapon.
- NinjaDawg, on 02/21/2008, -0/+1Ah yes - when I read the tube worm comment I immediately searched for 'Joe' in the page. Yo Joe!
- haidalangara, on 02/21/2008, -0/+0yeah blue planet is badass...david attenborough has got such a great voice. if you liked planet earth but hated sigourney weaver as a narrator (as i did), attenborough does a british version of the series for bbc. :-)

- bosssmiley, on 02/21/2008, -2/+52Sir David Attenborough. He is an undisputed god of broadcasting and the only reason (apart from "Top Gear") to pay the TV license fee.
- jj101, on 02/21/2008, -0/+10He also ran BBC2 for a while and commissioned match of the day! But his nature docs are an unrivaled achievements in broadcasting history in my opinion. A living legend.
Theres a fantastic old video of him, when he was much younger, encountering a tribe in new guinea (i think), where they run at him screaming and waving spears and he just steps forward, extends his hand to shake and says "good afternoon" in a ridiculously English voice. Does anyone have a link?- Miscellaneous, on 02/21/2008, -2/+1I know the footage you're talking about. I've got it on his DVD, "Attenborough In Paradise". It's amazing when you watch it and see the reactions of these tribesmen who had never heard of Attenborough, let alone seen a white man before and there he is filming them and giving them chocolate and other stuff they had never tried or heard of before. Makes me wishful that there might be more pockets of people somewhere, unmolested by the modern world.
- diadem2, on 02/21/2008, -0/+1The camrea man just kept filming too? Was he really being attacked? Was it really a first contact?

- wooberstein, on 02/21/2008, -0/+4People say things like that a lot, but considering our oceans are finite space, I doubt that we know more about space than the oceans. We know a bit about our solar system and surrounding area, and we know where a few galaxies are, but mapping is not equal to exploring. We've known the layout (through sonar) of the ocean floor for quite a while now.

- hellbent88, on 02/21/2008, -0/+1so if humans some how do block out the suns energy not every thing will die.....interesting
- Adamande, on 02/21/2008, -1/+3This probably will. When the narrator says these eco-systems don't depend on the sun's energy he's a bit inaccurate. I imagine he means direct sunlight. But the energy from the sun warms up the oceans overall and keeps the huge underwater currents working. If the sun were blocked out, the currents would stop, water would freeze and that eco-system would probably die. (Others might still live though. We are looking for life on Jupiter's ice moon Europa.)
- unr1, on 02/21/2008, -1/+3exactly. When I heard "independent of sun's energy" i was like WTF.
- RenZ87, on 02/21/2008, -0/+2@Adamande
If the sun was blocked out, the deep ocean will not freeze because of the amount of pressure at those depths. The eco-system is not dependent on sunlight since light is unable to pass through the water. The only source of energy present is the methane.
So the eco-system is not dependent on sunlight - minigamer1896, on 02/21/2008, -0/+1Um, I hate to point this out, but the tidal/gravitational fluctuation in the Jovian system is the only reason why Europa has the possiblity of life residing on it. The fluctuation is akin to our heart; the moving outside forces of gravity cause the moon's core to keep molten via friction, and allow for the possiblity of life to exist in the fluid. Without it, the moon would likely be a solid ball of ice. See Io for an extreme example of what the is happening to the core of Europa.
I don't know if the tidal action of our moon would be enough to keep the core active enough for the brine pools to stay fluid. - kingmanic, on 02/21/2008, -0/+1Thermal vents also provide heat, so if we somehow caused a nuclear winter this life would persist. The oceans wouldn't instantly ice over. If we removed the sun, that'd be a different matter. But I don't know of any technology that can remove the sun.
- Adamande, on 02/21/2008, -1/+3This probably will. When the narrator says these eco-systems don't depend on the sun's energy he's a bit inaccurate. I imagine he means direct sunlight.
