- Adam87, on 02/21/2008, -1/+169I have seen this series a few times and recent a friend of mine bought the Planet Earth/Blue Planet set and it is awesome. I highly recommend if you have any interest in nature or environmental science. Really amazing what they say at the end, how we have only explored 1% of the ocean floor, incredible how much work there is still to be done.
- pinstripewizard, on 02/21/2008, -4/+147That narrator could tell one HELL of a bedtime story.
- dotlizard, on 02/21/2008, -10/+139omg, it's the Goo Lagoon! (oh man i watch way too much spongebob for an alleged adult.)
- sakuraz, on 02/21/2008, -5/+82I love David Attenborough's works.
Raise your thumbs if you do too! - pmctosh, on 02/21/2008, -2/+63I'm still shocked at the whole 1% thing. Impressive bit about the 200 yr old tube worms.
- bosssmiley, on 02/21/2008, -2/+52Sir David Attenborough. He is an undisputed god of broadcasting and the only reason (apart from "Top Gear") to pay the TV license fee.
- sharpie45, on 02/21/2008, -0/+33Amazing stuff. I'm surprised Blue Planet didn't get the recognition that Planet Earth did. Just as good in my opinion. I think some of the footage might overlap, that could be why.
- SpaceMonkeyZero, on 02/21/2008, -0/+27Then it's turtles all the way down!
- KnightWhoSaysNi, on 02/21/2008, -1/+26Now we know Spongebob Suqare Pants is based on scientific fact.
- hakz, on 02/21/2008, -2/+25thumbs have been raised
- neuens07, on 02/21/2008, -2/+25I wonder if underwater lakes can have underwater ponds...
- Widgett, on 02/21/2008, -1/+19Blue Planet is indeed a badass set. And I can't think about tube worms without remembering that original GI Joe animated miniseries. Sad? Yes, very.
- Fxer, on 02/21/2008, -0/+17Until they reach a turtle.
- inactive, on 02/21/2008, -4/+21Spongebob Squarepants?
- catachip, on 02/21/2008, -1/+17What would be your criteria for our understanding of the Earth? Different scientists explore different things simultaneously. Astronomers are not interested in the oceans, are you going to pull them off their telescopes and force them into wet suits?
- bosssmiley, on 02/21/2008, -0/+15What, nested one inside another? Each successive pool having a higher level of chemical concentration and ever stranger lifeforms. That would be weirdly cool.
- PlutoniumPlague, on 02/21/2008, -2/+16seriously, that was the first thing that came to my mind...
- theragu40, on 02/21/2008, -1/+13Agreed. In some ways, I kind of feel like the deep sea is even more intriguing than outer space. We can search for life in outer space, but it's so vast it's difficult to make any real progress. On the other hand, you have the deep sea which is almost entirely unexplored, certainly has new and wondrous lifeforms that we can't even imagine, and is right here on our doorstep. I find it completely fascinating.
- capiCrimm, on 02/21/2008, -3/+14Planet Earth/Blue Planet for President 2008!!!
- Doodleshanks, on 02/21/2008, -0/+11Mee Thane ... hee hee hee
- bctrainers, on 02/21/2008, -0/+11It's water on top of water! Brilliant!
- jj101, on 02/21/2008, -0/+10He also ran BBC2 for a while and commissioned match of the day! But his nature docs are an unrivaled achievements in broadcasting history in my opinion. A living legend.
Theres a fantastic old video of him, when he was much younger, encountering a tribe in new guinea (i think), where they run at him screaming and waving spears and he just steps forward, extends his hand to shake and says "good afternoon" in a ridiculously English voice. Does anyone have a link? - inactive, on 02/21/2008, -2/+12I bet if they were able to dive into the underwater lake, and it was big enough, there could be another lake under that too
- hacman, on 02/21/2008, -1/+11"There's a fleck on the speck on the tail on the frog on the bump on the branch on the log in the hole in the bottom of the sea."
- petro62, on 02/21/2008, -4/+14Pretty amazing that we no more about space than we do about our own oceans. Not that I mind, but I think we really need to be putting large efforts into exploring both.
- GfunkGbuss, on 02/21/2008, -1/+10I like turtles.
- Maksx, on 02/21/2008, -4/+13There was a lake in the middle of the ocean
The prettiest lake that you ever did see.
Well, the lake in the ocean
And the green grass grew all around and around
And the green grass grew all around. - sremick, on 02/21/2008, -2/+10"Pretty amazing that we no more about space than we do about our own oceans."
Knowing a bit more about the dictionary might be worthwhile too. - inactive, on 02/21/2008, -1/+9ُُThat will make nice under water weekends!
- noisician, on 02/21/2008, -0/+8yeah, every scientist should all concentrate on only one thing. all of them.
why are they looking for cures for cancer, aids, heart disease, alzheimers, etc when they still haven't cured the common cold? - billybob217, on 02/21/2008, -0/+8David Attenborough is an amazing narrator. Planet Earth rocks my world!
- Xiol, on 02/21/2008, -0/+8It's called British English you idiot.
I logged in just to downvote you. There are countries and languages outside of America you know. - inactive, on 02/21/2008, -0/+8What has two thumbs and likes Blue Planet...
- ghee, on 02/21/2008, -1/+8I'm ready!
- SpaceMonkeyZero, on 02/21/2008, -0/+7But at least now the 20 people in the world with Restless Leg Syndrome are ok! THANK GOD!
- ours, on 02/21/2008, -0/+7Spongebob was created by a marine biologist after all :-). http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Stephen_Hillenburg
I know, it's hard to believe. - baalzebub, on 02/21/2008, -2/+9that is part of a documentary by David Attenborough, he has done some amazing documentaries on nature & natural phenomena...
- shmatt, on 02/21/2008, -0/+6David Byrne was right!
- BrokenVisage, on 02/21/2008, -0/+6The Talking Heads were right! There IS water at the bottom of the ocean.. under the water, carrying the water.. and the days go by. (damn shmatt beat me!)
- inactive, on 02/21/2008, -0/+6THIS GUY!!
- bamafun, on 02/21/2008, -2/+8I would like to take the new underwater car down to take a look at this one ! =)
- CedEx, on 02/21/2008, -0/+5Pfft... found a lake... when someone finds an ocean at the bottom of a pond, I'll be impressed.
- mrdoogee, on 02/21/2008, -1/+6Buried for Celso != Kelso
- Veni_Vidi_Vici, on 02/21/2008, -0/+5I suddenly feel proud that I didn't know what that was from.
Bill Nye FTW !!! - mrdoogee, on 02/21/2008, -0/+5Better than NASA making submarines.
- elementop, on 02/21/2008, -0/+4Love the show, but don't smoke.
OTOH, I *do* have a six year old daughter, and Sponge Bob is vastly better than a lot of the other stuff she likes to watch. Or maybe I just never grew up :) - wooberstein, on 02/21/2008, -0/+4People say things like that a lot, but considering our oceans are finite space, I doubt that we know more about space than the oceans. We know a bit about our solar system and surrounding area, and we know where a few galaxies are, but mapping is not equal to exploring. We've known the layout (through sonar) of the ocean floor for quite a while now.
- DiggzDE, on 02/21/2008, -2/+6I think there are 5 of them.
- haydesigner, on 02/21/2008, -2/+6What a maroon.
- Sucka27, on 02/21/2008, -0/+4I thought Blue Planet was better because the U.S. got Sigourney Weaver on the voice over for P.E. She can't hold a candle to D.A.
