- vault, on 12/21/2008, -18/+73Green voters have the most unrealistic expectations ever.
- michaelpinto, on 12/21/2008, -4/+48This is a direct result of having the first primaries in Iowa - no state (no even New Hampshire) should have that kind of monopoly every four years. After the mess with Michigan and Florida something needs to be done to change this. Ironically now is the best time for the Republicans to shake this up - although you can bet it's not on their radar...
- Mujokan, on 12/21/2008, -2/+42Just for those who don't click through, here is the beef (so to speak) that the Organic Consumers Association has with Tom Vilsack.
• Vilsack has been a strong supporter of genetically engineered pharmaceutical crops, especially pharmaceutical corn.
• The biggest biotechnology industry group, the Biotechnology Industry Organization, named Vilsack Governor of the Year. He is also the founder and former chair of the Governor's Biotechnology Partnership.
• When Vilsack created the Iowa Values Fund, his first poster child for economic development was Trans Ova and their pursuit of cloning dairy cows.
• The undemocratic 2005 seed preemption bill was the Vilsack's brainchild. The law strips local government’s right to regulate genetically engineered seed.
• Vilsack is an ardent supporter of corn and soy based biofuels, which use as much or more energy to produce as they generate and drive up world food prices, literally starving the poor. http://www.organicconsumers.org/articles/article_1 ... - Beatmiser, on 12/21/2008, -4/+35I'm amused by everyone here bashing this because it is from the Christian Science Monitor that don't realize it's a well respected publication that has been around for a long time.
- msaleem, on 12/21/2008, -3/+31A little premature on the declaration I think, but good questions to start asking.
- inactive, on 12/21/2008, -4/+28Even better article here: http://www.counterpunch.org/cummins12182008.html I hope you get to read this one!
- kolop1, on 12/21/2008, -10/+30But Obama will save us all...right?
- supermanred, on 12/21/2008, -6/+24No, he wont. But at least he wont send your son or daughter to war so his rich friends can make even more money.
- bodhibay, on 12/21/2008, -15/+30Meet the new boss...
- groo68, on 12/21/2008, -0/+15There is no real war on terror. We don't need to take out countries to kill terrorists. that just makes more terrorists. we need to work with countries to clear out corruption and call it foreign aid, not carpet bomb cultural centers and cheer about a victory.
- SemiSarcastic, on 12/21/2008, -10/+25"Hey, this guy isn't officially the president yet..."
"But I need something to bitch about NOW!" - kds405, on 12/21/2008, -1/+16The Christian Science Monitor has nothing to do with Christian Science anymore.
- enigmatics, on 12/21/2008, -1/+14Actually... even as an atheistic socialist I've found them to have some very reputable, balanced reporting. At least as far as faith based journalism goes.
- inactive, on 12/21/2008, -3/+15Let us engage in a rational discussion of this important topic.
- badfish0116, on 12/21/2008, -4/+15No I think this is the part where you sound like a whiny douchebag.
- inactive, on 12/21/2008, -2/+12Has Obama disagreed with anything Bush has done since he won the election?
- JayBabs, on 12/21/2008, -7/+17Business as usual. This is why I don't put my faith in a politician to create "change".
- skinturtle, on 12/21/2008, -2/+11The thing about promising change is that everyone has their own agendas as to what that "change" is. So when this guy gets into office and he doesn't do "change" the way some people have interpreted it to be...he'll be screwed. It's already starting...and he isn't even in there yet
- ericdano, on 12/21/2008, -15/+24Did anyone REALLY believe the BS that Obama was going to change things? First clue was Biden as VP.......
- Elliuotatar, on 12/21/2008, -7/+16This doesn't jive with this:
"Environmental groups, scientists cheer Obama appointments"
http://www.latimes.com/news/nationworld/washington ... - Kidddrunkadelic, on 12/21/2008, -2/+10If voting actually brought change it would be outlawed.
- quaxon, on 12/21/2008, -1/+9That should have actually been the final clue. Any body who did any actual research on him, like his senate voting record in which he voted for fisa, patriot act, bailout, etc. should have known that he was the same exact prick as every other mainstream politician. Hell the fact that he got so much attention from the mainstream media to AIPAC should have been enough for any intelligent person to figure out that he was bought and paid for by every major corporation and conglomerate in this country that has been running things for decades now. And you actually thing is change huh? the only politicians that will bring the actual change you idiots speak will never be allowed that kind of access to the media. You didnt want change, you just wanted to fit in and prove to everyone how un-racist you are by voting for the kinda black guy who acts just like the typical white.
- SeraphimJulius, on 12/21/2008, -5/+13I love how people are bitching about Obama before he has actually put his plans into play.
Sure he may have picked people you disagree with but he has control over them. I rather someone with competence have control over people and be able to mold them into what he needs them to do.
Wait until he actually ***** up before complaining. - jrburkh, on 12/21/2008, -4/+11In political news...
The SHOCKING truth:
Some people like some politicians, some people don't like some politicians. News at elev... oh, actually that's the whole story. - jhails, on 12/21/2008, -1/+8Monsanto is the Exxon of agriculture. No change here folks. Looks like a descision Bush would have been happy with.
- galeninjapan, on 12/21/2008, -10/+17News Flash: Politicians don't keep promises.
- splorpdotorg, on 12/21/2008, -0/+7By RONNIE CUMMINS
"Vilsack's nomination sends the message that dangerous, untested, unlabeled genetically engineered crops will be the norm in the Obama Administration," said Ronnie Cummins, Executive Director of Organic Consumers Association.
The author quotes himself? "I guess that saves time in finding other people with the same opinion," said splorp! - badfish0116, on 12/21/2008, -5/+12Actually he's sending 30,000+ more troops to Afghanistan. But I'm sure it's for the best of intentions/
- Squires, on 12/21/2008, -1/+7Expanding a war in the "Graveyard of empires," sounds like a great plan.
The government cannot create jobs. It can only reallocate resources from a productive area to a politically favored area, which has the effect of destroying jobs in the productive area. - grungegbunny, on 12/21/2008, -2/+8Yeah! Those crazy scientists want us to think the world is some sort of sphere too. Just go outside and look at all the flatness especially in Kansas.
- voisine, on 12/21/2008, -4/+9Oh shut up. The voters were given the opportunity to vote for change and they rejected it with Ron Paul. They voted for Obama instead. In a democracy, you get the government you deserve.
- AgmLauncher, on 12/21/2008, -5/+10lol @ people who think this guy will bring change.
Here's a reality check, the office of the president of the united states
1. Does not have the power to bring the change we need
2. Does not allow the occupant to stay in office long enough (even if elected for a second term) to effect the majority of his plans due to the incredibly sluggish process of passing bills through the house and senate.
3. Is at the mercy of the culture of its citizenship, which at this point is ignorant, lazy, and unpatriotic.
It has nothing to do with Obama as a person, it's a simply a reality check about his position.
Good luck Obama. You have the equivalent challenge of climbing Everest naked, without oxygen, and without ropes/harnesses. - sodade, on 12/21/2008, -1/+6The very word "christian" screams "you can't trust us to be objective."
- jab46, on 12/21/2008, -2/+7The man is not the President yet! Give him a chance.
- Cattywampus, on 12/21/2008, -5/+10It's one of the nation's more respected newspapers.
And it's a hell of a lot more credible than the Huffington Post, which seems to be the source of most of the political-related info posted here on Digg. - sigg14, on 12/22/2008, -0/+5but you can judge by what he has done in the past what he will probably do in the future. that and well look at the company he keeps. and actually resorting to the "your racist" defense of obama is what reeks of desperation.
- haydesigner, on 12/21/2008, -0/+5@groo68: "we need to work with countries to clear out corruption"
Starting with our own. - Cattywampus, on 12/21/2008, -7/+12Apparently a lot of people on Digg really believed it. (Of course, some of them don't read anything except the Huffington Post.)
- inactive, on 12/21/2008, -1/+6Obama sold you a bill of goods. For a guy who got elected to get rid of the failed policies of the last 8 years', it looks like he is setting himself up for another 4. It is funny that the description lists climate change as our top challenge when unemployment is headed to 9%, and social security and medicare are on course to bankrupt the nation in 15 years. That is unless Obama's proposed runaway spending does it first. History is headed for a replay of the late 1970's with an approaching deep recession matched with ruinous inflationary monetary policy. Who will be the new Reagan I wonder.
- inactive, on 12/22/2008, -0/+5Monsanto GM = food patents = food tax to a corporate entity. Try suing them when your crops are contaminated! Like Music they will blame you for downloading, so to speak..
Good luck! - FoxtrotUSAF, on 12/21/2008, -9/+14You can't hate him for what he's done in the past so lets hate him for things we speculate he'll do. You reek of desperation, which smells a whole lot like racism.
- greenfyre, on 12/21/2008, -0/+5MOst or all of us die? http://www.realclimate.org/wiki/index.php?title=Im ...
- quaxon, on 12/21/2008, -2/+7So basically you are saying because it is hard, he shouldnt even try. And on top of it you will give him a pass for being just like every other politician. I mean seriously dude, what has he actually ever done in his time in government that was actually good for this country. There were a number of bills in the senate that he voted for that should have set off a red flag for all you idiots who actually think he is different but his mainstream popularity and you peoples desire to fit in and seem hip out-shadowed the actual politics behind the man. ***** you and all the other apologist idiots, it's because of people like you actual change is hard to come by as you are the ones who choose the same ***** politicians over and over again.
- slippeh, on 12/21/2008, -3/+7Which has a huge effect on the content of the article, as we all know.
- nick111, on 12/21/2008, -0/+4Still... appointing a Monsanto guy?
- inactive, on 12/21/2008, -1/+5It's time to wake up. You've clearly completely bought into the entire package Obama has been selling to get elected. You've been had. I'm embarrassed for you. Nothing has changed. This isn't some grand paradigm shift, the beginning of a new era, or anything else like that.
And @ foxtrot: to imply that disapproval of Obama's planned policy is racist? Holy *****...talk about lunatic fringe. - dancantone, on 12/22/2008, -0/+4I'm a Democrat but when Obama gave his acceptance speech with all the repeated references to how he may not be able to accomplish a few things he promised....I knew what had happened.
This ***** guy is a puppet like Bush Jr.
***** anyone who snickered and ridiculed Dr. Ron Paul, a fine honest American.
Not the racist he was smeared to be!
I was born here in the South and am just now 38....I hate what America is now!
I remember the first group of Cambodians that infiltrated our schools....they just didn't fit in or belong culturally.
At least when blacks were integrated, they were familiar with the ways of our American life.
I'm sorry if that sounds racist because I'm not, just honest.
Anymore, a lot of "American's" are not even from America!
If you're not living behind a gate, you'll soon be ***** under during the coming civil unrest planned to throw us all into chaos.
All to bring about a change in our sovereignty and lead us all into a globalized New World Order.
They now freely admit to it.

~***** all Obama Zombies~
You voted for the enemy AGAIN!
Google "Obama and the Council on Foreign Relations"
That's not the "Change" I care to believe in people... - Betrayal, on 12/21/2008, -3/+7Oh god look how the shift in opinion about Obama suddenly changed here on digg!
- inactive, on 12/21/2008, -2/+6"Chains we can believe in". Most people are lemmings, they will get what they deserve.
- uncleosbert, on 12/21/2008, -1/+5i have to admit, vault's assessment matches my experience. many of my environmentalist friends seem almost like they make a point out of being impossible to please. that's got to change if we're going to get anyone to listen.
"It's a question of tactics. Civil society does not respond at all well to moralistic scolding. There are small minority groups here and there who are perfectly aware that it is immoral to harm the lives of coming generations by massive consumption now: deep Greens, Amish, people practicing voluntary simplicity, Gandhian ashrams and so forth. These public-spirited voluntarists are not the problem. But they're not the solution either, because most human beings won't volunteer to live like they do. Nor can people be forced to live that way through legal prescription, because those in command of society's energy resources will immediately game and neutralize any system of legal regulation.
However, contemporary civil society can be led anywhere that looks attractive, glamorous and seductive."
