- otep, on 10/11/2007, -10/+152.
.....Whoo hooo -- a rarely seen species! Let's kill it. - 47knight, on 10/11/2007, -2/+94You know what really angers me about stuff like this, why the hell do they only have 1 picture of the damn squid, if it's a colossal squid why can't they take more and higher quality images!
dammit! - inactive, on 10/11/2007, -10/+100Mmmmnnnnnn Calamari
- manicleek, on 10/11/2007, -3/+87Whats next on the scale?
Ludicrous Squid? - Speedy7, on 10/11/2007, -15/+93Old News from February...
- juliustan, on 10/11/2007, -13/+55buried for use of "amazing"
- TheTimmeh, on 10/11/2007, -5/+35Cool stuff, but I think 5 months old is pushing it...
- inactive, on 10/11/2007, -0/+24FTA: "the squid would yield calamari rings the size of tractor tires"
Good Lord that's a big ***** squid. - LotusWolf, on 10/11/2007, -1/+24Mmmmmmmm colossal calamari
- mace2, on 10/11/2007, -0/+19I'm hoping there are lots of animals we don't know about in the deep deep ocean areas. Like maybe squids the size of football fields. That would be so awesome.
- sabach, on 10/11/2007, -2/+20If you slice it real thin.
- wiiaboo, on 10/11/2007, -4/+19"Bring out... the Krakken!"
- Homunculiheaded, on 10/11/2007, -0/+14forget the space station:
"Ph'nglui mglw'nafh Cthulhu R'lyeh wgah'nagl fhtagn" - Goombellaofgoom, on 10/11/2007, -1/+14I think the next size up would be "Kraken."
- rhythmisnothing, on 10/11/2007, -5/+17"I can assure you that this is going to draw phenomenal interest."
front page of digg.
can't get any more phenomenal - Uranium118, on 10/11/2007, -0/+12M-M-M-M-m-m-m-m-m-monster Squid!
- secretwhistle, on 10/11/2007, -3/+14Next class up is "Ginormous."
- spider418, on 10/11/2007, -6/+17Dugg to irritate date police...
- Makaras, on 10/11/2007, -1/+12Yeah, and while these guys aren't caught that often (b/c they live down so deep in the ocean most of the time) there have been a few good documentaries done, and all physical evidence points to there being a whole lot more Colossal Squid than what one would think. So while it is bad this one dies, it would have regardless of what the fishermen would have done, and it offers a rare chance to study what scientists know very little about. So all I am really saying is to me, the pro's slightly out weigh the cons....
- xtmno3, on 10/11/2007, -1/+11Would a Ludicrous Squid move at Ludicrous Speed?
- blast_flame, on 10/11/2007, -3/+12It's not a squid, it's a pink vorlon dreadnought (geek cred to whoever gets that)
- arjie, on 10/11/2007, -0/+9Well, some of us thought they'd caught another the way the title was worded.
- troon, on 10/11/2007, -1/+10Old news - IIRC, when they got it back to NZ, they had to use a giant microwave oven to defrost it for dissection. It was so large that if they just let it thaw out, the outer bits would have decomposed before the inside had thawed.
- keysersoze1, on 10/11/2007, -0/+8Mesonychoteuthis was discovered in 1925, long after the giant squid was described. This was the first adult captured and, since in many species the female is much larger than the male, the maximum size is still unclear. Here's a good fact sheet on them and check out the wicked hooks on the messie's tentacle club. http://www.tonmo.com/science/public/giantsquidfacts.php
- Sabretou, on 10/11/2007, -10/+18This is old news - FEBRUARY 22, 2007. How the hell did it get to front page on JULY 02, 2007?
- BloKKem, on 10/11/2007, -1/+8I like how in the comparison picture, the school bus is 40 feet long and the colossal squid is 43 feet long but the squid is much shorter than the bus. It also looks like a horizontal penis with legs
- berktt, on 10/11/2007, -2/+9I bet you would be bitchin' about it even if it was a month old... There are much older articles in Digg, but there always seems to be people who are reading about it for the first time.
- dmightx, on 09/21/2008, -2/+9I never saw this before...
- violet02, on 10/11/2007, -0/+7This always happens. Every single time they find some amazing sea creature we never hear of it again and there's one somewhat crappy photo. I wonder what else they've found down there that we never get to see!
- Goombellaofgoom, on 10/11/2007, -2/+9FYI, the squid was already dying when they caught it. If it was still lively, they would have released it after just a few pictures instead of pulling it into the boat.
- Protoss, on 10/11/2007, -2/+8hey he said ALMOST!
- eggloaf, on 10/11/2007, -1/+6That was almost as funny as me blocking you.
- Millsee, on 10/11/2007, -4/+9That's a lot of ink for a lot of pens.
- ruley, on 10/11/2007, -0/+5Cthulhu?
- inactive, on 10/11/2007, -0/+5If your penis looks like that - you should go see someone soon.
- dmightx, on 09/21/2008, -1/+6So was it killed before or after they captured it. I hope they didn't kill it themselves.
- RobotKing, on 10/11/2007, -4/+9I think the school bus can take him on.
- BigSax, on 10/11/2007, -0/+5I don't know about the school bus, but the mighty firetruck.... If it stalks giant squid the way it stalks gazelle, this monstrosity doesn't stand a chance!
- TheTankengine, on 10/11/2007, -0/+5Only if it is camouflaged as plaid.
- Radionesiac, on 10/11/2007, -0/+4IT'S A TRAP
- kuuhaku, on 10/11/2007, -0/+4Yes....you did....twice!
- OwdenBowden, on 10/11/2007, -2/+6No Halo 3 viral Advertising at its finest. LOL
- inactive, on 10/11/2007, -0/+3that's a lot of times
- jodofashodo, on 10/11/2007, -0/+3NSFW
- coreytn81, on 10/11/2007, -0/+3It's not like they set out to kill it. They lay out nets to catch toothfish, and the squid became entangled. That doesn't make them any less guilty for killing it, but it's not like they spotted it like Moby Dick and decided to harpoon the thing.
- WitNit, on 10/11/2007, -0/+3Man I saw the title and thought, "Great they found another giant squid. I wonder if it's bigger than the one I saw photographed and posted all over the internet months ago." Then I clicked on the link and realized...it's the one I saw months ago. :(
- pyry, on 10/11/2007, -0/+3Someone who likes a giant penis with legs?
- inactive, on 10/11/2007, -0/+3Why he hell did they CATCH it?
Couldn't they just leave the poor thing alone >:/ - coreytn81, on 10/11/2007, -0/+3They mention the eyes being as large as dinner plates, and having sharp hooks on some of their suckers.. "they have all these awesome traits, and we're not going to photograph them, we're just going to give you details and let you imagine"? In all fairness it could be worse. I mean who takes a high quality SLR onto a fishing boat?
