- Serphyas, on 11/18/2008, -0/+14I wanted to make a witty comment, but...geez, this is just such a goddamn barbaric trade.
- Serphyas, on 11/18/2008, -1/+14*adjusts monocle*
Pshaw, incorrect! Ivory is actually found in the animals' teeth and tusks, my good sir.
-Buzz McKillington - organicpop, on 11/17/2008, -2/+11What a heinous crime...
- FurtThePirate, on 11/18/2008, -0/+7wow I didn't even know that ivory was still a worth while market...
- viker7, on 03/30/2009, -0/+6Don't ***** with Tony Jaa's elephants.
- DJBONEZ, on 11/18/2008, -4/+8That really is messed up. If you think about it, their bones would look really good as a staircase railing in my house.
- Barackalypse, on 11/18/2008, -1/+5Africa has a totally different standard for heinous, if it doesn't involve cannibalism, female genital mutilation, ethnic cleansing, or hundreds of thousands dead, it doesn't even tip the heinous meter there.
- k3rfuffl3, on 11/18/2008, -1/+5They keep the lions in check.
- Annibal, on 11/18/2008, -0/+3Yuo can also substitute "African elephants" with americans....duh!
- CTabuga, on 11/18/2008, -1/+3no more dead elephants!
- MedicalMatt, on 11/18/2008, -0/+2see also Idi Amin, who in thinking that jailing the leaders of the opposing political party wasn't enough, ate them.
- MedicalMatt, on 11/18/2008, -0/+2It's money from ***** like this that funds ***** like that.
- aereaus, on 11/18/2008, -1/+3Man I can't believe all the down digging Elephant haters. What's up with that?
- PeppermintPig, on 11/18/2008, -0/+2Ever?
- AFelsinger, on 11/18/2008, -1/+3probably store it until they allow another auction like they did last month, with the money benefiting conservation efforts.
- Lula87, on 11/18/2008, -1/+3Does a species have to do something for humans for it to deserve living on earth? Do you really think you're so important that an intelligent and mostly peaceful herbivorous roaming species on the other side of the planet from you doesn't deserve to live unless it's serving some purpose for you? That's a really ***** narcissist way to live.
- Ch0mpr, on 11/18/2008, -1/+3Who would kill an elephant? Seriously how ***** up is that?!
- Barackalypse, on 11/18/2008, -1/+2Then maybe we can stop that pesky ethnic cleansing happening in Darfur?
- daridave, on 11/18/2008, -0/+1Yeah, besides Dove is better for my skin. No, seriously, this is great news... but the sad part is, it's still "too late" if you think about it...
- inactive, on 11/18/2008, -0/+1Now Kenya can spend more time on its three main exports: Failure, AIDS, and refugees.
- terrydog64, on 11/18/2008, -1/+2Good
- Barackalypse, on 11/18/2008, -0/+1Sorry, I didn't mean to give the impression that I cared, I only care that my tax money isn't wasted trying to stop this, I just like to toss out how amusing it is to me that people are happy efforts to thwart ivory traders in Kenya while elsewhere on the Continent its human beings being hunted by the thousands.
- Barackalypse, on 11/18/2008, -2/+3Why are they wasting resources on this when 230,000 people fled the murderous violence in Darfur in 2008? They estimate 300k people have been killed since 2003 in the Sudan alone, ivory poachers don't even show up as a minor annoyance against that scale of human dealth and suffering. But hey. what's a couple million dead Africans from starvation and violence really matter, they're only humans and there are over a billion of them left, its the elephants we've got to worry about, they aren't so numerous.
http://www.iht.com/articles/reuters/2008/10/21/afr ... - viker7, on 03/30/2009, -0/+1jealous?
- MedicalMatt, on 11/18/2008, -0/+1or heroin addicted elephants. That wasn't too cool either.
- MedicalMatt, on 11/18/2008, -0/+1put it in handsoap
- Imabanana, on 11/18/2008, -0/+1Good thing they got busted, but a little late, the elephants are already dead...
I wonder what they are going to do with all the ivory tho, if they just trow it away or something like that, the elephants died for nothing - sugarkang, on 11/18/2008, -2/+3if you care that much, why don't you go to darfur and help out?
we're fighting two wars already.
our economy is a turd sandwich.
what do you expect?
the united states has done more than any european nation in fighting injustice.
sure its got its faults, but compare us to europe.
americans need to stay the hell out of other countries' business and let
europeans take over as policeman of the world if they're so inclined.
and you can go along with them. - gfxlonghorn, on 11/18/2008, -0/+1Or the head's of statues... it's totally worth killing and injuring tons of people over!
Yeah he can back flip kick into a lamp post... so what? - Remelox, on 11/18/2008, -0/+1Only if people start selling ivory from the victims of Darfur. Then Interpol will fix everything.
- PeppermintPig, on 11/18/2008, -1/+1Destroy it and increase the value of Ivory, and reincentivizing future poachers... There's a solution, but nobody wants to listen so whatever.
- aereaus, on 11/18/2008, -1/+1Fan-*****'n-tastic! I heard a report on the BBC that S. Africa was doing a once-every-ten-year sale of ivory. The ivory came from elephants which died of natural causes at the nation's national parks. The report stated that since it was going on, illegal trade would rise because of the sale, due to traffickers believing their stuff would go unnoticed during the sale.
But it was probably apart of a vast sting operation. Right on! Digg it! - hillkiwi, on 11/18/2008, -1/+1Finally a use for Black Water militants. $10,000 per poachers head.
- Lula87, on 11/18/2008, -1/+1heh heh
- thebadkitty, on 11/18/2008, -1/+1Did you not read what I said? I stated I'm not for the killing of the elephants, so don't get your hemp panties in a knot.
And no, African elephants are NOT mostly peaceful. They rip trees apart, have been known to gore other species when they get too horny (which is often), mud up watering holes, have no natural enemies so they're not even serving as a food source, and kill zookeepers and conservationalists just trying to keep their sorry wrinkly asses alive.
All I'm saying is, maybe they aren't as magical and holy as some hippies are convinced. Oooooh, I see why you're whining. I just looked up your profile. You're a chick. - Richandler, on 11/18/2008, -1/+1So what are they gonna do with all that ivory now that the elephants are dead and all?
- PeppermintPig, on 11/18/2008, -1/+1There are enough people out there who will do it because the illegality raises the value.
- theadvinci, on 11/18/2008, -1/+1What the guy above me said. Those idiots should be made into chess figures.
- gfxlonghorn, on 11/18/2008, -2/+2In other news, the Kenya Wildlife Service is having a piano and false teeth auction.
- cnot3, on 11/18/2008, -3/+2Now what are we supposed to make our piano keys out of?
- Lula87, on 11/18/2008, -3/+2I have been travelling all my life and I have ALWAYS seen ivory for sale in other countries. I would accuse the merchants of selling illegal contraband and they always claimed it was from an elephant that died from natural causes. Yeah right! I'm glad this bust was made, hopefully someday we can get the elephant populations back to what they used to be.
- TheScogg, on 11/18/2008, -2/+0I know I'm not the only one that was hoping that this was going to be a giant statue of a female's bosom carved out of beautiful, precious ivory.
- WileyK, on 11/18/2008, -3/+1Probably store it somewhere, which means the elephants died for nothing.
What a waste, ivory is a gorgeous material. - inactive, on 11/18/2008, -6/+4They certainly grabbed those poachers by the horns.
- kanojo1969, on 11/18/2008, -2/+0It's funny how people's opinions can vary on basically the same types of problems. While the ivory trade (and the trade in rare animal parts in general) is terrible, the effort to stop it is just as ineffective and misguided as the efforts to stop the drug trade in your own country.
They both have the same root cause; poverty, hopelessness, lack of education. And the only way to fix it is to resolve these issues first. As someone said above me - spend this money on getting rid of the despots and genocidal maniacs and it might actually do some good. - thebadkitty, on 11/18/2008, -6/+2I'm not exactly for the killing of these creatures, but out of curiosity, what have African elephants ever done for the world? I mean, Asian elephants at least pull their weight (in the literal sense) and coexist with humans, but don't African elephants just kinda trample stuff? They're pretty violent.
- inactive, on 11/18/2008, -7/+1Omit the word "elephant" and you're pretty much right.

What is Digg?
