You have got to be kidding. Even NASA admits publicly that global warming exists.
I'm not even going to bother digging your comment down. I've stooped too low already. - Topher06, on 10/12/2007, -0/+9@ AegisGFX, you clearly don't know how a Prius works. It doesn't even plug into the electrical grid
http://hybridcars.about.com/od/hybridcarfaq/a/howpriusworks.htm
I will admit though that hybrid cars are only trendy vehicles for the treehuggers that are still clueless. Drive a hybrid car over 60km/h and your using gas just like every other car on the road. Great for dense urban neighbourhoods with a lot of traffic lights and stops, but for highway commuting and less dense cities, they do pollute as much as any other car.
Also, the whole argument about how electric cars just make the pollution elsewhere, I would prefer if ALL cars were electric and then you can keep pollution to a point source rather then spread out across millions of vehicles. The ability to control pollution output at a point source is a lot more practical then trying to make millions of cars less polluting. For instance, a coal burning electrical plant could be made to capture its Carbon emissions if technology is made available, and so you can retrofit the plant to be greener. You can also build it outside of the city and surround it with carbon consuming trees to make it have less of an impact on the environment. Sure, pollution is diverted elsewhere, but is manageable and the cities/towns become less smoggy and healthier to live in. Also as alternative power generation facilities are made available eventually fossil burning plants can be turned off while there will still be millions of gas guzzling cars on the road even after the industry goes fully electric. Governments can control power plants, they can't put a gun to your head and force you to abandon your gas guzzling smog producing SUV. - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -6/+14The reason why Global Warming is such an annoying issue with me is because those who are backing the idea of global warming seems to be even more closed minded than those not automatically accepting this "self-produced" fate.
It's getting warmer in some parts, things are going a little weird compared to our super extensive amount of knowledge of our history; oh wait, we've only got about a hundred years worth of semi-usable information about our world's weather patterns. If you want to use the weather and specifically temperature level index for the past 100-odd years, that's fine, but own up to the fact that it's not exactly the most precise prediction, especially since we know earth has been here slightly longer than we've been around, and has had much, much greater climate changes without the super evil fossil fuels. Since this "global warming" is due to our emissions, how exactly did previous climate changes happen without these nasty little guys? Let's avoid it since it hurts the "global warming" arguement.
Even if all of the previous statements were true, and they might very well be true, this extremely excessive amount of negative feedback from "global warming" supporters against the "non-believers" has seriously got to stop: it doesn't help a thing. It does, indeed, make the situation even worse as it turns off the potential large portion of the public who would be beneficial to convince in the fight to fix these problems. I've definitely noticed this in my family, mostly conservative, in which even the subject of "global warming" turns into a "oh god, not this stupid issue again", and anything after the introduction is automatically ignored. Why? Because of the -excessive- negative name calling and arrogance from the other side. As stated earlier, you're losing a large portion of the population who could aid in helping things change for the greater good.
Now do the ideas of making cars run cleaner and finding better ('alternative' already has a negative connotation, sorry.) sources of energy make the environment slightly better? There is a strong possibility that this is true, but I doubt we'll find the answer to that any time soon with the constant badgering of name calling, "it's our fault, we're idiots", and "nothing can change, only stay at today's level" theory continuing to proper and zero signs of letting up. You want someone to blame for this "global warming" still persisting? Don't yell at the mom trying to raise a decent family - yell at the people making possible partners into enemies and laugh at the political use of "environment". I get sick at the thought that people for the environment have managed to get their opposing side to hate the idea of helping the environment so much that we can't even talk about it. - danakin, on 10/12/2007, -1/+8Ah, irony. So delicious.
- nixonrichard, on 10/12/2007, -22/+28Their message was a response to a message created by kids from an arctic Inuit community.
Let me tell you something about those arctic Inuit communities who are encouraging the rest of the world to go carbon neutral. I have been to several arctic villages and they:
Power entire cities by burning gasoline
Drive snowmobiles everywhere . . . even little kids, it's like their form of a big wheel
Drink loads and loads of soda. I don't know what this has to do with global warming, but soda is the new water in those cities. - drmangrum, on 10/12/2007, -1/+7There are places where an SUV is the only viable vehicle of choice. What people make fun of is how so many suburbanite soccer moms "absolutely MUST have" an SUV to drive little Johnny and Suzy to their 15 different structured activities over 20 miles of asphalt.
People will sacrifice $10,000 in initial vehicle cost, plus the insane gas costs when a minivan is more practical and economical....all for the looks and to keep up with the Joneses. - PunkPortrais, on 10/12/2007, -13/+19Damn hippies.
- nixonrichard, on 10/12/2007, -3/+8I'm pretty sure after seeing that picture, the Super Adventure Club got to those kids before their parents arrived.
- mateo60, on 10/12/2007, -5/+10I know Global Warming is an important issue, and I'm all for conservation and all, but this picture makes me want to go buy a Hummer and run my A/C full blast.

That map does not show any of the good effects. For example, plants grow better with more CO2, that's why they pump CO2 into some geenhouses. And parts of Russia would become more farmable. - dvsbastard, on 10/12/2007, -4/+7@futureruins There is truth in it, however, as long as you don't confuse "Climate Change" with the often touted "Global Warming" alarmist clap trap... Then you will do fine! Otherwise... EVERYBODY PANIC!

You just made my point for me. It's the sun, not anything we're doing. - mateo60, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3@MysticMaven
Seriously? The point that I was trying to make was that I found what the kids in the picture did to be too much symbolism and not enough substance. It seems a little corny. I would've been much more inspired to hear about a group of kids who went and cleaned up a park. Or had a bake sale, or washed cars to donate proceeds to an environmental cause, or walked around the neighborhood to collect recyclables, or any number of things that would've been more valuable than being a human sign.
Those kids went home thinking they did something great by making a human sign when they could've actually gone out and done something worthwhile. That's all I'm saying.
(For the record, I drive a small car that gets 50 miles to the gallon, I recycle as much as possible, I feel Americans are often much too wasteful and I'm a little ashamed of that.) - civperc, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3good lord that site is cluttered. horrid design/layout. could they have any more ads!?
- rossmcd, on 10/12/2007, -3/+6"Never underestimate stupid people in large groups."
That's how Dubya got re-elected. - 15charmaxwtf, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3I think that it's great if people want to do stuff on their own to make more energy but the last thing they should do is allow government to take a role. That is only asking for trouble. Why would they do more than just rhetoric and tax collection even if there was actually a problem? I guess they would fund more scientists to come up with more gloomy outlooks in their models ;) Oh, but that only benefits their rhetoric.
Anyway, on more of a side note, they haven't done a job of protecting private property against pollution for the last 150 years. - fetus54, on 10/12/2007, -2/+5I live in Park City and I can safely say this is true. A joke that me and my friends always make is there goes that mom in her SUV to pick her one kid up from school. To be fair it is somewhat justified to have a SUV here. The roads can get pretty nasty, and since our school never calls snow days (I ***** you not, I went to school for five years in Park City and they did not have one snow day) even though buses can not come, moms do have to drive their kids to school, and a huge SUV with snow tires is invincible on any Park City Road.
- scutfarcus, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3joe122370 - if scientists were trying to make money off "lucrative government grants" then they would disagree and try to create controversy so as to bring in more "lucrative government grants" to further study whatever topic was at hand. The fact that 99% of scientists are in total agreement about global warming totally negates your claim. What is totally clear, however, is that the 1% of scientists still trying to muck things up are funded by the oil industry.
I realize that the *effects* of global warming are not totally clear and that leaves room for debate as to exactly what we should do about it, but the point is we are screwing the hell out of the planetary systems on which stable life depends. - anarchyinthekr, on 10/12/2007, -1/+4@ fetus54
i am also from park city and it is justified to have an suv, however it is not justified to have one for every member of a family especially when there are so many damn hummers - Ghstfce, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Who are we kidding? It really says "Drink more Ovaltine".
- scutfarcus, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Well, you can vote can't you? And by that I mean voting with your dollars as well as at the ballot box! (support companies that give a darn)

- betasp, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2I bet they are public school kids.
- PragmaticSense, on 10/12/2007, -4/+6If the winters continue to get warmer; people don't need to burn so much oil and natural gas to heat their homes. This in turn causes less pollution to be spewed into the air. Interesting.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3timbellomo, one of them is me being sarcastic. Figure out which one for yourself. =)
Aardvark1878, that would prove that there was climate change in the past, and I am not denying that at all. In fact, I use that as a point. - PeachesTheCow, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3Why in the world does this post elicit such rage and hate? Are we really that cynical?
It's just a bunch of kids doing something rather interesting that gets attention. Carbon emissions are definitely affecting the planet in unpredictable and potentially negative ways, why get upset when some kids bring that to the forefront?
I do have to agree with the guy who mentioned klingon - i have no idea what that's supposed to be a picture of! - BigManOnCampus, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1LOL!!
So some kids are saying, "Don't worry all you peeps up north freezing your asses off, we'll try to keep it cold for you!"
ahahaha, that's hysterical. - pilgrim3970, on 10/12/2007, -2/+3"There is evidence for climate change, although I'll continue to repeat that global warming is a misnomer"
Yes but it is a "misnomer" that was repeated over, and over, and over (ad nauseum) until it became obvious that it was making those using the term look foolish, now it is "climate change". That we have climate changes is a no-brain-er. What is debatable is what, if any, impact man has on this. Why this seems to surprise people is puzzling. My only guess is that people can't accept that we may see a world that is like what the dinosaurs existed in and that in due time we may actually see another ice age.
The other poster who stated that NASA has "admitted" there is global warming - so what? that is about as astounding as if they had said there are fish in the ocean. But hey, I guess keeping folks alarmed is good for funding.
OK, it's early, I haven't had my cup of coffee, and I'm rambling.... - ironpirate, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2global warming is one of the biggest scams of the century
- scutfarcus, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2Correct. Global *weirding* would be more appropriate. The point is we are seriously messing with the planet's life support systems.

"they can't put a gun to your head and force you to abandon your gas guzzling smog producing SUV."
--just wait, any time now. - joe122370, on 10/12/2007, -3/+4....and the actual process of making the batteries for your Prius, and the problem of where to dispose of them when they quit working in 5 yrs is way more worse for the environment than just shutting the F up and driving whatever you want.
- kkss, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2As the blog entry notes, this event happened in conjunction with the premier of "Everything's Cool" at Sundance. The film does a great job of showing why the general public was wrongly convinced that the FACT of climate change was up for debate. If you link to the local coverage you'll see that this had nothing to do with "a bunch of hippies." Also, you can link to the film's web site to learn more about it.
- bbass74, on 10/12/2007, -2/+3"Yes, global warming happens naturally; however, the current rate at which the change is occurring is not natural."
And what evidence do you have to support this statement? What data do we have based on the past episodes of climate change that supports what the proper rate of climate change and what is an escalated rate of climate change looks like?
That's right, there isn't! Because we've only been collecting weather data for about 100 years and the last warming of the earth was approximately 18,000 years ago. Do you know what the rate of warming that took place back then was? Of course not, no body knows. So before you start making general statements that you heard on CNN or from Al Gore, you may want to do a little research and start thinking on your own. - kkss, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1As the post mentions, the language is Inuktitut.
