- jayrok, on 11/22/2009, -3/+14Acid also leaves Phish and its followers at risk.
- Countess666, on 11/23/2009, -0/+4almost all powerplants remove the sulphur dioxide from their smoke to prevent or at least minimize acid rain.
its also why its removed from all vehicle fuels today.
but as with all carbonated beverages, CO2 makes water more acidic, and we increased the concentrations in the air by 1/3, and the oceans follow that. - InfiniteNothing, on 11/22/2009, -1/+4Not really. Once you eat all the fish where are you and all your cousins going to get food?
- chillybeans27, on 11/22/2009, -0/+3At the time of the Cambrian explosion, I doubt these fish had such a highly evolved mechanism of predator detection. Regardless, the point is that they're not used to these artificially elevated CO2 concentrations now, and it's affecting their ability to survive.
- yankeesultan7, on 11/21/2009, -0/+3Acid in the ocean poses a serious problem for fish ruining their sense of smell. This must be eliminated
. - getsome2k, on 11/21/2009, -2/+4Bad for the prey, good for the predators, bad for the world.
- Midtowner, on 11/22/2009, -2/+4Evolution will eventually catch up. Fortunately, fish should be pretty quick-evolving creatures considering how quickly they can multiply.
- InfiniteNothing, on 11/22/2009, -1/+2Kind of a big bet no? Evolution can only work so fast. Maybe some GM is in order.
- quirkopatra, on 11/22/2009, -1/+2Second story this week about our dying oceans.
- erkokite, on 11/22/2009, -2/+3In other interesting facts, I brushed my teeth this morning.
- schrutefan, on 11/22/2009, -2/+2We can just pour bleach into the oceans to balance it out.
- nirvanix, on 11/23/2009, -1/+1Aren't the oceans being acidified by sulphur dioxide from burning coal?
- poitsplace, on 11/23/2009, -0/+0The study was for 1000-2000 PPM of CO2
Once you factor in the ever-increasing amounts of CO2 necessary to raise atmospheric concentration...there isn't enough coal/oil/natural gas known or even suspected to exist in commercially viable levels to reach those levels. Why the heck did they even bother to study 2000ppm when we can't hit 1000ppm? - quirkopatra, on 11/22/2009, -2/+1I haven't done that yet. Not finished with my coffee. You gonna watch some sports on TV today?
- jrm125, on 11/22/2009, -2/+1Fatal attraction!?
- curtisag, on 11/22/2009, -3/+2So during the Cambrian era when life was exploding in terms of diversity and numbers on land and sea, where carbon concentrations were 10 to 20 times higher than today, there was no problem. But today at much lower concentrations it is. Nice.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cambrian_explosion - Aliwalla, on 11/22/2009, -4/+1if you look at it from the predators perspective it's awesome.
- AlyxVance, on 11/22/2009, -4/+1these people stop at nothing.
