- Alex2, on 12/26/2007, -3/+11Ya.. that's it.. the ice caps aren't melting from global warming.. it's HOTSPRINGS!
YEAH! That's the ticket! - Clade, on 12/26/2007, -1/+7Maybe the loss of the icecap is due to the numerous environmentalist-sponsored ice breaker ships going up there to measure the ice and the temperature of said ice :D

- SyntraFTW, on 12/26/2007, -0/+3Am I the only one with his mouth open at "Wayward Robots"?
- l2OI3, on 12/27/2007, -0/+3Somehow I expected this to be a google search for "Hot Springs" . . .
- Magwich, on 12/27/2007, -0/+2They did a story on "Wired Science" tonight on PBS about this. Great show if you haven't seen it, especially if you like Wired Magazine.
- jgzman, on 12/27/2007, -0/+1This is, in fact, what I was expecting the story to be about. "Search? That's an old way to say 'google.'"
- Mockylock, on 12/27/2007, -0/+1Did they talk to Russia to make sure it's alright to travel there?
- hddigger, on 12/27/2007, -0/+1I also just finished watching the newest episode of Wired, and it was quite good as usual. Very interesting, indeed.
- whyufail, on 12/26/2007, -1/+2And believers in the hollow earth theory are rallying their reasons why this is all a fake and they can't possible be there! It's the same set as the moon landing! Shenanigans!
- jsg7, on 12/27/2007, -0/+1Let me know if they find any sleestacks under there...
- inactive, on 12/27/2007, -0/+1Is it just me or does it look like a whale swimming in the background (right) when they film under the ice?
- hoopy22, on 12/27/2007, -1/+2I was expecting some "remarkable finds" as stated in the title. You know, like 180 bazillion barrels of oil, or maybe an alien spaceship base.
Maybe "mildly interesting" would be more correct in describing this article. - Markpdotcom, on 12/27/2007, -0/+1is small?
- wrathchilde, on 12/27/2007, -0/+1Nice article. Gakkel Ridge is o.ne of the slowest spreading mid-ocean ridges on the planet. It is similar to the .mid-atlantic ridge, except that with such a slow spreading rate, there is far less mantle melting, and the kinds of venting likely to be found are more like the Lost City site, which is unique so far.
I like how NASA gets top billing for kicking in $3 million, while NSF *whose budget is more than 10 times smaller) gets a brief mention for putting in over 1.5 times that much. Nice. - wrathchilde, on 12/27/2007, -0/+1Oil is found on continental shelves, you know with the sediment, and time to cook the organics... Mid-ocean ridges are basically zero-age, where crust is generated, and there are no sediments or large organic deposits to make oil.

- scoottie, on 12/27/2007, -4/+4LOL
- SkippyDoorknob, on 12/27/2007, -2/+2The earth is steaming mad at ice!
- UtahApocalyse, on 12/26/2007, -2/+1So drilling a hole through ice and unleashing hot springs is what really is melting the ice.
- Walshboy, on 12/27/2007, -1/+0NASA funding for bottom of the arctic circle host springs? Isn't that also where there are large deposits of oil? Something smells fishy and it is not the new species of sponge. Unless it is really good at cleaning up oil spills.
- debuggercll, on 12/27/2007, -5/+4Digg me down.
- Takteek, on 12/27/2007, -3/+2That wasn't very funny....
- newtrip, on 12/26/2007, -12/+7We already know what is below. It's the screams thousands or possibly millions of tortured souls. Let's not drill any more holes guys! No good can come from this!
I'm totally cereal. - spyd3rweb, on 12/26/2007, -14/+7There can't be hot springs in the arctic.. IT MUST BE GLOBAL WARMING!!!
- ps2pers0n, on 12/26/2007, -11/+0My penis.
