http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=U01xasUtlvw - trashymac, on 07/15/2009, -0/+9This is gonna be very popular in Portland.
- wannaBdug, on 07/15/2009, -2/+11ABAA? It doesn't sound right. They are being quite hypocritical aren't they?
- hotentot, on 07/15/2009, -1/+8I dumped AAA car insurance last year, after 43 years! I had a stellar driving record, but some financial difficulties, which are now being resolved, and AAA uses credit ratings (at least in MI) to help determine your insurance costs! That's an outrage, as my credit has absolutely nothing to do with my driving ability! I went with State Farm, at half the cost! AAA has gotten too big, and they think they don't have to listen to the consumer.
- CoD4, on 07/15/2009, -1/+8Why people put AAA stickers on their cars is beyond me
- HiSam3, on 07/15/2009, -0/+7Yeah!
- ShingoEX, on 07/15/2009, -2/+7It's not pronounced as a single word, so it's not an acronym. It's just a set of initials. NASA, NAFTA, and LASER are acronyms. FBI, CIA, and AAA are just initials.
Maybe you learned something new today. - omgwtflawl, on 07/15/2009, -0/+5Holy *****! You can skip going to the DMV with AAA?
Like, for everything or only for certain things? Can I transfer a drivers license from another state through AAA, for instance? - magus_melchior, on 07/15/2009, -0/+5I think the idea behind "hostile to public transit = bike unfriendly" is that bicyclists can and do take their bikes aboard trains (although they don't help crowded trains much), and many buses come equipped with bike holders in their bumpers. Reduce public transit, and you reduce the effective range of a bicycle unless you're Lance Armstrong.
- hbyrne, on 07/15/2009, -0/+5What will AAA think up next?
- ShingoEX, on 07/15/2009, -1/+5If you're quite a ways away from your destination, and you get a flat tire, broken flywheel, brake failure the frame breaks, etc...roadside assistance would be a big help.
Also, AAA isn't an acronym :P - codered1322, on 07/15/2009, -0/+4Isn't roadside bike assistance just one "A" for "Ambulance"? I bet they come quicker than a tow truck at least...
- ByteGuerilla, on 07/15/2009, -0/+4"it has never been particularly bike-friendly. In fact, the association lobbies *against* public transportation funding."
Bikes aren't public transport. - inactive, on 07/15/2009, -0/+4Some jokes aren't funny enough to be posted.
Just sayin. - holyskeleton, on 07/15/2009, -0/+4"hey cutie! what's going on?"
"aww my bicycle broke. can i get a ride?" - schwack, on 07/15/2009, -2/+5"AAA Roadside Assistance, are you in a safe location?"
"Is the back of a police car a safe place?"
"Yes sir, what is your emergency?"
"I just accidentally rammed my bike into someone, and I need a tow." - Ghostalker, on 07/15/2009, -0/+3"I feel for ya pal, but you want AA, this is Triple-A"
"Hi my name is Homer and I'm planning a trip to St Louis" - bdbr, on 07/16/2009, -0/+3Wow, this is the third time now. If the Digg description doesn't make total sense, try reading the article rather than guessing what the description means. AAA "actively lobby against bike paths, bike-friendly traffic laws and other green concerns"
- Earlofnecromium, on 07/16/2009, -0/+3"hey AAA, im running low can someone run me out a sandwhich and a glass of water?" Best thing ever.
- bdbr, on 07/16/2009, -0/+3The article said they had also lobbied against bike paths and bike-friendly traffic laws.
- Sky75, on 07/15/2009, -0/+3Better World Club FTW!
- 4AntiStupid, on 07/15/2009, -0/+2I would always carry a kit with parts and tools, but this would be good for the less mechanically inclined that doesn't want to get stuck 10 miles from home with a flat. It might be hard to find enough contractors in some areas.
- grovest4life, on 07/15/2009, -1/+3Bike paths, buses that can hold bikes.
- janjamm, on 07/15/2009, -1/+3I the the triple A is really triple F'd.
- absolutelytrue, on 07/15/2009, -1/+3I really want to know.. what will AAA think of next?
- awfl, on 07/15/2009, -0/+2My first insurance was with AAA, back in the day of the oval aluminum stickers on the back of red wagons and TripTiks. For me they were most always more expensive than State Farm at maybe 1/3 less, and do I recall you used to have to buy a membership as well? Plus AAA does not have a monopoly on roadside assistance.
- barth2k, on 07/16/2009, -0/+2they need to extend this service to pedestrians. I got it into my head to go hike the Appalachian trail the other day. After a mile, I thought WTF was I thinking. I could've used some pedestrian roadside service then. Hey AAA send some undocumented workers with a rickshaw to come haul my ass home!
- WebmastuhB, on 07/16/2009, -0/+2So now if you are on a bike riding around your neighborhood and it breaks down you can call AAA and wait 3 hours for an inept tow truck driver to show up. Or you could simply walk home.
- bdbr, on 07/16/2009, -1/+3The article explains why they're not bike-friendly.
- KittySpark1es, on 07/15/2009, -0/+1I haven't had to go to the DMV since I joined. I'm imagine there are some things you can't get done at a AAA office (like a drivers test for instance), but most of you basic things you can accomplish.
And why the heck am I getting dug down? Is there a large DMV employee population on digg.com or something? - codered1322, on 07/15/2009, -0/+1America... ***** YEAH!!!
- omgwtflawl, on 07/16/2009, -0/+1LOL you are lucky. I waited 6 hours to get a license transferred from one state to my current one, and another 7 to get my car registered. It sucked.
- sjones, on 07/16/2009, -0/+1Freewheel.
- grovest4life, on 07/16/2009, -0/+1There is a rack on the front of buses in some city's

http://transit.metrokc.gov/tops/bike/bikeride.html
I guess its more municipal than public though. - MayorMcCheapo, on 07/16/2009, -0/+1I've been a long-time AAA-er, but I never knew about their anti-bike lobbying efforts. I find that rather creepy. If this development signals a turnaround from those Big-Tobacco type tactics, then I'm all aboard!
- inactive, on 07/16/2009, -0/+1They're just setting themselves up for an insurance scam.
- cyrix, on 07/16/2009, -0/+1Flywheel? You mean hub? Or maybe rim? Other than that the only thing I can think of would be the rotors for my avid juicy brakes.
- ByteGuerilla, on 07/15/2009, -1/+2Those are public transport initiatives in America? In the UK we put bike paths on the pavement or in very narrow lanes on the side of the road, and those come out of local council coffers unrelated to public transport. We don't have bike racks on buses either, how do those work in the US? Do you hook the bike onto the back of the bus, or take it on with you and put it somewhere?
- SteveSgt, on 07/16/2009, -0/+1You can't carry a spare and a tool for everything. For example, how many people carry a spare rim and a wheel truing stand?
In my case, on my ride from Portland to San Francisco last month, I had a rim weld fail. I had to run the tires almost flat to keep them from coming unseated from the rim. Having a service to come fix that would have been like the MasterCard commercial: priceless. - thebigredcat, on 07/15/2009, -0/+1Oh, you *so* beat me to that! That bit was the first thing I thought of when I read the title. Well done.
- KittySpark1es, on 07/15/2009, -3/+4The $50 a year (or rougly) it costs for AAA is worth it alone to keep yourself from having to go to the DMV. DMVs are miserable.
- inactive, on 07/15/2009, -1/+1Depends on where you live. I have a satellite location DMV near me that has never had more than one person in line before me, and often I walk in and am the only one there the entire time I am doing my business.
- Lederhosed, on 07/15/2009, -4/+4I always thought AAA stood for Automotive ***** of America.
- inactive, on 07/15/2009, -4/+4What does allegedly being against public transportation funding have to do with bicycles? Are their public transportation bicycles? Bicycles Built for 100?
- AAAnews, on 07/17/2009, -0/+0If you look at AAA's record on environmental and safety issues (http://bit.ly/AAAenviro) and transportation funding (http://bit.ly/VyLQh), you'll see that AAA has always supported public/mass transit as a way to reduce road congestion and promote clean air. Also, AAA has always been a proponent of adequately funded infrastructure which includes mass transit, pedestrian safety and yes, even bicycles.

- AAAnews, on 07/17/2009, -0/+0You ask a very good question. Some people assume that "transportation funding" means only vehicles on a road will benefit. If you take a look at http://bit.ly/VyLQh, you'll see that funding for transportation infrastructure includes public/mass transit, pedestrian safety and yes, even bicycles, as well as adequate roads to relieve congestion, which has the added benefit of helping to clear the air. Less idling in traffic or on commutes = better air quality in cities.
- Hazardous544, on 07/16/2009, -0/+0If this is not enough try working for a tow company that has to AAA contract. All i have to say is hypocrites.
