- CaptainPlanet, on 03/26/2009, -0/+3i am so happy to see this post. I use social media everyday to organize for the environment. it helps me meet new activists, provide easy ways to take action like emailing or calling your congress person. Most importantly social media allows networks of folks to take action in their own communities. with a little help from organizers people can sign up and get support to do anything from organize house parties to recruit for lobbying their congress people, to visiting their supermarkets and demanding sustainable seafood policies. social media isn't the end all be all of environmental activism but it is really contributing to building the movements and amplifying grassroots efforts by giving tools to activists.

- julieanna, on 03/26/2009, -1/+2From SXSW to Change.org, all my experiences this year are reaffirmed my belief that social media is *the* way to foster activism and support a cause. Keep up the good work.
- keloyd, on 03/26/2009, -2/+3BAH! This article has the whiff of bloggers all listening to each other and pulling their own taffy.
Rampant Capitalism is the cause AND SOLUTION to wildlife preservation. The passenger pigeon was worth nothing to anyone; the American bison was valuable for its byproducts and tourism. Guess which one is still around by the millions.
When wood gets expensive, we grow it on sustainable farms or find substitutes. The Soviets just killed and poisoned everything in sight.
Bloggers and "social media" will never be more than fringe actors. The owners of the means of production, the corporate upper management and Ivy League scientists and captains of industry will save the environment while bloggers wring their hands or take credit. - Fruit45, on 03/26/2009, -0/+1this guy must really hate the earth
- LokitheComplex, on 03/26/2009, -0/+1I miss the passenger pigeon.

- starfocus, on 03/26/2009, -1/+2There are many ways to help through social media. It would be great to hear some of them in the comments.

- IKORKYI, on 03/26/2009, -1/+2on the plus side, they are grouping two things i hate: environmental activists and social media, making it easier for me to express my hate of them.
- inactive, on 03/26/2009, -0/+1Thanks for spamming your link. I bookmarked it, so I could urinate all over it later.
- drunkenoaf, on 03/26/2009, -2/+2I'm not sure how any people growing a tree in a Facebook app (which is most people's experience of social networking and wildlife)...
These tools require a bit more action to protect our countryside-- but all are most worthy. - 1plant1world, on 03/26/2009, -4/+4It's a hell of a lot better than blowing things up to make a point!
- inactive, on 03/26/2009, -1/+1Animals on Facebook? WTF!

- aixelsyD, on 03/26/2009, -2/+2Yea we can surely save the wildlife while we sit on our ass in front of our computers. How would it not be possible? So according to the website, you can give other people money so you don't have to do *****, learn about saving the wildlife, and make yourself feel good by participating in an online forum/petition/data mining activities.

- inactive, on 03/26/2009, -1/+0Captain Planet, he's a weirdo,
Gonna bring PH levels down to zero.
He's our powers magnified,
And he's fighting on a dirty hippies side.
Captain Planet, he's our zero,
Gonna be a poverty creating hero. - inactive, on 03/26/2009, -1/+0The Government should give people that want solar panels for there roofs interest free loans to get them. The min payment to repay the loan should be the same price as there current electric bill
Think about how much less oil American would use if every roof in America had solar panels on it
if you think this is a good idea then write your senator. You can find there contact info here http://www.senate.gov/general/contact_information/ ... - s10stealth, on 03/26/2009, -2/+0Leave Darwinism alone.
If any species can't handle the changing environment, natural selection will ALWAYS prevail and remove the weak to make room for the next stronger species. - ianenos03, on 03/26/2009, -3/+1Seems to me that social media can have a positive effect, and can also be a convenient cop-out that allows people to feel like they're doing something while really doing absolutely nothing, if not hurting the cause.
- inactive, on 03/26/2009, -2/+0Couldn't they look at Goat pictures from the past?
- eled, on 03/26/2009, -2/+0They kept forgetting the ist throughout the article, even in the title.
- Gibletoid, on 03/26/2009, -6/+1I used to go door to door for the Western Canada Wilderness Committee. It's a non profit group that just thinks that a percentage of wilderness needs to be protected, so we can get our protected areas in line with the states.
We would ask for donations, but our main job was to educate people about grizzly bear hunting, salmon hatcheries, and certain specific areas that need protection.
Our small little group of canvassers and phoners managed to stop 2 logging companies from cutting down 13 cut blocks since that was some of he last habitat for the Western Spotted Owl. All through legal means and the help of good people that care about their backyards enough to pony up.
It takes real work and real passion to get anything done.
If you don't speak from your heart at someone's door, they are not going to help you or the wild.
Social media for the most part is for the lazy, or the sitting at the very least.
Grassroots education is good in all it's forms. - inactive, on 03/26/2009, -7/+2social media can really make a difference and help people participate and spread the news about problems and solutions ... http://welovecroatia.com/en/
