- AmyVernon, on 06/29/2008, -0/+8i have what's referred to in gardening as a black thumb, but absolutely everyone else in my family has a green one... i'm proud to say that they follow pretty much all of these tips. (my M-I-L composts, but the yard waste she doesn't, she recycles)... good advice.
- lucy22, on 06/29/2008, -0/+7I have been in the garden everyday. We have such a short season here. I try to get the most of being outside.
- chrisfnet, on 06/30/2008, -0/+6I just got my garden back in this year. Everything's been doing great so far.
I recommend everyone plant a garden, or at least a few plants. It's amazing how much money you can save on groceries. Plus, self-sufficiency is good for everyone. - MadOgre, on 06/30/2008, -0/+4We installed a Grey Water system here at Ogre Ranch. Works quite well and saves money and water. I'm talking thousands of gallons.
What that is, is waste water - not from toilets - is directed into a cistern, in this is located behind the shop, quite a bit deep under ground.
Water from the bathtub, sinks, dishwasher, washing machine... is directed into this holding tank. The water is filtered and somehow treated. I don't understand that bit so good. Then that water is reused in my garden and for landscaping.
I'm Greener than most Democrats now. Ha! - Thrilltone, on 06/30/2008, -0/+3ding ding ding
Trumps all 8 of those other ideas combined.
Could be a great cottage industry to convert our homes.
A fancy system is not required.
Simple rerouting of sinks, washer and shower and a system of pvc valves and pipe will work great.
Can you imagine how much fresh water the U.S. would save? - buckchoris, on 06/30/2008, -0/+3Just digg a hole in your garden and ***** in it,keep it buried in sand for 4-5 days and there you go human fertilizer.
- inactive, on 06/30/2008, -0/+3Going green is the new $$$.

Except if you live in south, then it just brings heatstroke. - MadOgre, on 06/30/2008, -0/+3"Billions and billions", as Carl Sagan would say.
Here is the kicker. My house was already plumbed for this... living out in the desert like I do, with a Septic tank... the other water had to go someplace else. All we had to do was drop a pump down into it. Done. 300 bucks. With water savings, it's already paid its self off and is putting us ahead. Wife gardens constantly. She has a lovely English Style garden. As she calls it. Areas are broken into sub sections and different things grow in the different areas, different shaped areas. All use water... water that would otherwise be wasted.
We also had to change our detergents and soaps and such. Small change. We just buy different products that work as well, don't cost any more... done.
And here I am being all Green.
Who wants to buy my carbon offsets? - inactive, on 06/30/2008, -0/+2missed the most important one..dont have a lawn.
- beauley, on 06/30/2008, -0/+2Most of us have at one time or other visited grandma's house to partake in her newly harvested tomatoes, or even freshly picked onions in the quaint back yard garden patch. You knew they were fresh because the garden soil had to be washed off those that were dug up.

Grow a Garden, Harvest Truly Fresh Vegetables - inactive, on 06/30/2008, -0/+1I'm really more of a straight edge punk kind of guy you know the Clash and Doc Martins, though I have known a few hippy Unix greybeards in my time. I am not quite that old enough to have Hendrix posters, hint I was 1 when Are You Experienced came out. Sorry to disappoint your stereotypes, not.
- antonio97b, on 06/29/2008, -3/+4my "garden" has an old engine block in it awaiting to be turned into a coffee table.
That and a bunch of used oil spilled. - atlquaker, on 06/30/2008, -1/+2Rule 1b. Plant some of those "magic" seeds that your uncle brought back from Amsterdam.
- inactive, on 06/30/2008, -1/+2The original Unix nerds were guys with quite literally Birkentocks and grey beards, i.e. hippies. Some of us ARE old enough to remember that and enjoy the best of BOTH tech and organic things. Ipod touch, Hardy Heron, AND freshly grown organic veggies, I know I do...
- rock774, on 06/29/2008, -1/+2plant grass !
- PuterPrsn, on 06/30/2008, -0/+1In Texas we're just about past the plant point unless your garden is under the trees - it's already 100 degrees and rising, the ground like adobe (the brick, not the application ;)
Tomatos & squash in pots on the porch - yes, until the squirrels dig up the roots :( - Hincapie, on 06/30/2008, -0/+1my garden is usually green
- Thrilltone, on 06/30/2008, -0/+1There are a lot of additives that plants don't mind at all. My friend serviced a commercial pool and the plants thrive the best where the heavily chlorinated water is dumped during backwashing.
- inactive, on 06/30/2008, -0/+1One of the best ways to green up any plant, lawn or garden is to cultivate your earth worm population. Worm poop just cant be beat! They love household compost, horse poop, grass clippings and even cardboard. My worm farm keeps all my gardens growing green.
- qbthemc, on 06/30/2008, -1/+1Damn i need some more immigrants.

http://digg.com/users/windowboxes/gallery/ - inactive, on 06/30/2008, -1/+1I believe you. You sound like you might be stuck in the sixties. I bet you have a Hendrix poster in your living room. I am old enough to remember that and you were freaky then and you still are. Have you ever grown anything that didn't have a odd number of forks on the leaf?
- RyanBlack, on 06/30/2008, -3/+2Are my begonias spurting out carbon emissions now?
- booyahbitch, on 06/30/2008, -2/+1Freaking Hippies!!!!! :o)

- inactive, on 06/30/2008, -5/+1how did this make the front page? diggers don't have gardens, unless they're some sort of virtual nerd game.
