- Mankind121, on 07/17/2009, -2/+14This seems pretty common sense. These articles are getting ridiculous, this ***** is not new.
- Axeman2063, on 07/16/2009, -0/+5hey man, just because I live in my parents basement doesn't mean its not my driveway too...I park my scooter there and everything...
- TheBogie, on 07/17/2009, -0/+3A few more tips:
The kids used to leave the faucets running sometimes by mistake, so I took the handles off of them. We use channel locks to turn the faucets on and off now and that seems to have cured the problem.
I also like to wash my whites in the dishwasher to conserve energy. Throw in a little Oxi-clean with the dishwasher soap and your drawers will come very clean.
To conserve on flushes, everyone in my family take ***** in a bucket and then we flush it when it is full. Also, we piss outside on the vegetable garden (dual purpiss). I've found we can go over a week without flushing the toilet. - Axeman2063, on 07/16/2009, -1/+4The low flow toilets are a good idea, but i find the amount of water isn't always, ah, up to the task...leading to multiple flushing. I'd rather go with a 3.5gal model that has two flush modes, say, half tank and full tank for those big fiber days.
- Atario, on 07/17/2009, -0/+3Keep in mind, this is Reader's Digest we're talking about here.
- serif69, on 07/17/2009, -0/+2I prefer the pressurized ones. It's a like a ***** jet engine. Nothing ever gets left behind, and it uses less water. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Flush_toilet#Tank_sty ...
It also has the longest wikipedia link I've ever seen. - EdLau, on 07/17/2009, -0/+2We're too smart for this article.
- inactive, on 07/17/2009, -0/+28. Fertilize and relieve yourself at the same time, piss on a tree
- paulsabo, on 07/17/2009, -0/+2I'm going to leave the tap on when I go to sleep tonight, just out of spite (and the fact that I live on Lake Superior)
- futureisours, on 07/17/2009, -0/+2Because of this stupid article, I'm leaving my water running all night. Damn environmental fascists trying to control everyone.
- wolfie1010, on 07/17/2009, -0/+27. When you handwash dishes, rinse in a basin of clear water, not under a running tap.
Really? Don't you know that the basin won't stay clear as soon as two or more dishes have been dipped in it? The idea is to actually get the soap off of the dishes. - kenlaw, on 07/17/2009, -1/+2Try not living a F'ing desert (i.e. most of CA and AZ). In Missouri, we pay more to get rid of excess water.
- bromac, on 07/17/2009, -0/+1No, it's about 59% water for adult males and teenagers and 56% for adult females. So 60% is rounded up, let along adding another 20% to get 80....
/insert statistics being made up on the spot joke. - bromac, on 07/17/2009, -0/+1Common sense isn't common. Even if you tattooed this to people's foreheads, they'd still leave the tap running while they read it in the bathroom mirror.
- manatee, on 07/17/2009, -1/+2Humans exhale carbon dioxide and our bodies are made up of about 65% water. So, if we commit suicide I guess that will help save the planet.
- diemunkiesdie, on 07/17/2009, -0/+1I leave it on when shaving. You have to rinse the blade off every few seconds anyways! I also leave it on while brushing, but that's mostly because I am waiting for the hot water to kick in and that takes a minute to get nice and toasty.
- Resistoon, on 07/17/2009, -1/+2Instead of peeing in the sink, try allowing only a little water to flush in your toilet. Or get a duel flush toilet. You could also not flush pee, like the saying goes "if it's yellow it's mellow, if it's brown flush it down".
An energy efficient dishwasher uses less water than washing dishes in the sink. - phosphite, on 07/17/2009, -0/+1I save my used dish water and return it to the drinking supply (lake), it's just a bit of bio-gradeable soap that gets filtered out. I also pee in the pond, spit in it and sweat into it too.
- wolfie1010, on 07/17/2009, -0/+1This was all funny till you wrecked it with the dual purpiss... that part was lame
- fraggle35, on 07/17/2009, -0/+1Save water, it hasn't stopped ***** raining
- Bleezer, on 08/02/2009, -0/+1Recycle greywater! http://www.envirosink.com/
- ATrueRoman, on 07/17/2009, -0/+1It's very simple to do right? yes it is but some dont know how to do it, it's a simple way to conserve water adn help our planet be a safe home for our children......
- palehorse864, on 07/17/2009, -0/+12. Taking showers rather than baths is the simplest way to conserve water and energy: A 3-minute shower uses one fourth the water of a bath.
I don't know many people who take three minute showers and get entirely clean. Couldn't you just apply the same logic to filling a bath tub 1/4th full as well?
3. A showerhead with an on-off lever lets you turn the water off temporarily without changing the temperature setting. You don't need the water running while you soap yourself up or wash your hair.
This is actually a good idea if you can make it compatible with your existing showerhead, or don't mind changing it out.
4. Low-flow toilets, which are now required in all new construction, use 1.6 gallons per flush versus 3.5 gallons for older models. By placing a plastic soda bottle full of water in the tank of an older toilet you can cut the amount of water per flush without the trouble and expense of replacing the toilet.
Most 3.5 gallon toilets need that much water to flush. When the low flows first came out, and for some time after, many of them would clog with the slightest provocation. If you reduce the water in a toilet that requires it, you're probably going to be plunging a lot more, or flushing twice and using the same amount of water to get it to work. The only low flow I've seen that worked 100% and never had to be plunged was one with a redesigned trap. The old ones were designed to use that much water for a reason.
6. Turn off the water while you shave or brush your teeth. Don't leave the tap running when you don't need it.
I've heard this one for years and it makes sense. I've never met anyone who actually leaves the water on while brushing though. Does anyone know someone who does this, or why they do it?
7. When you handwash dishes, rinse in a basin of clear water, not under a running tap.
You'll probably have to use some running water to get all the soap and gunk off or you're eventually going to be dipping your dishes back into soapy water. - jgrundy, on 07/17/2009, -1/+1We have daily city-wide water usage targets and the results are shown on signs around the city. (Canberra, Australia)
This is all common sense stuff... - inactive, on 07/17/2009, -1/+1Is Missouri handing out IOU's yet?
- Subduction, on 07/17/2009, -1/+1On the downside, however, you have to live in Missouri.
- LarkStew, on 07/17/2009, -0/+0We used to have a hot water tank but the energy people said they had to replace it with a run through boiler to save energy. So now instead we waste tons of water while waiting for the bloody thing to heat up. It annoys the hell out of me.
- Daniel591992, on 07/17/2009, -1/+1Is this it?
http://www.streettech.com/storypics/solarScooter1. ... - wikiworld, on 07/16/2009, -1/+1Good...but the list or a little short. Didn't even mention sweeping your driveway instead of washing it...or maybe that's because most digg users don't have a driveway
- swuster, on 07/17/2009, -3/+2Rinse dishes in a basin of water? How exactly does that clean off the soap when you pull it out?
- Cheezian, on 07/17/2009, -2/+1There is plenty of water...stop being so scared of running out. I won't waste water on purpose but I sure will enjoy as much as I need.
- jpyumul, on 07/17/2009, -1/+0I hate it when its our generation being so responsible about our resources.
How come they never think about those things 50 or more years ago? - inactive, on 07/17/2009, -2/+1the body is about 80% water.
- OUSooner, on 07/17/2009, -3/+1I pee in the sink to save water. Maybe that's disgusting but it makes since not to waste 4 gallons of water to flush our pee.
- mine4321, on 07/17/2009, -4/+3Here's a great idea... live someplace that has plenty of water and don't worry about it so much.
