- what? - inactive, on 11/03/2008, -0/+20The human mammals who were scheduled to copy edit that page became extinct.
- TheMachine1, on 11/03/2008, -1/+20Its says 25% now.
- Dionysus04, on 11/03/2008, -13/+28Its a green guilt trip.
- inactive, on 11/04/2008, -4/+16Let's face it... as much as people claim that they care, I don't believe people really do... at least not the majority of them. People are so closed minded these days... unless they see something for their own eyes, or it effects them directly, they don't believe it. These problems will never be resolved; not until something awful and hellish happens.
- bphicke, on 11/04/2008, -2/+14The solution begins with you.
- stev31h, on 11/04/2008, -0/+10um, how about something about the basic need of life, water?
- godspeed843, on 11/04/2008, -0/+8I liked it better when it was called "twelve monkeys".
- kizmar, on 11/04/2008, -1/+8"1. Population Explosion" - Bush is/was trying to correct this with never-ending war.
- thosewithnoeyes, on 11/04/2008, -5/+12What's great is that number 7 caused problems 1-6. Odd how those things work...
- inactive, on 11/04/2008, -0/+7As far as earth is concerned, We are like water on a dog...........ONE GOOD SHAKE and we're gone! Nature did it before, she will do it again and again and again.
- inactive, on 11/04/2008, -0/+7Which is why we've gotta be extra careful about pissing her off. I think the vast majority of anti-environmental people out there fail to understand that it's us, not the Earth, who are in danger here.
- godspeed843, on 11/04/2008, -1/+79. frogle
- Philodox, on 11/04/2008, -8/+14Really there's only one problem: #1. There's too many damn humans on this planet.
- wolfeater2, on 11/03/2008, -21/+268. President bush
- maximilen, on 11/04/2008, -6/+11^ Read Tom Clancy's 'Rainbow Six'. It scared the sh*t out of me -- Radical environmentalists tried to spread an Ebola type virus worldwide at an Olympic games to kill off 90% of the worlds population as a means to save the earth.
- rabidDice, on 11/04/2008, -1/+6"The Planet is fine. The people are *****." -George carlin RIP
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=eScDfYzMEEw - CatsAreGods, on 11/04/2008, -5/+10Earth first. People last. Why are you so surprised?
- offrdbandit, on 11/04/2008, -1/+6Sounds like a rigorous information source one should seriously consider when formulating opinions on such topics...
- Czechxican, on 11/04/2008, -1/+6The main problem is that the US can't really do that much to change some of these problems. Population is growing in the countries least equipped to deal with it. These are countries like Iraq, Sudan, Pakistan, Venezuela and poor parts of the Asian sub continent such as India. Because of this growth the problems associated with them will be hard to stop. The scariest problem by far is the water table under India and Pakistan drying up. With India's population growth and many of their crucial water sources originating in Pakistan, I believe there will be a huge crisis by 2030. The fact that they both have nukes and Pakistan is particularly unstable does nothing to reassure me.
That said, we need to try our best to fix problems like over fishing,CO2 emissions and nitrogen pollution. - rh4009, on 11/04/2008, -0/+4How much water can a dog carry?
- Velnich, on 11/04/2008, -2/+6The world needs a lot more gay.
- omegared, on 11/04/2008, -1/+5what did they do wrong? Present a problem to the public that is real?
So do you hate the people that try to say a couple of years about looming financial crisis?
Or wait do you hate that they used the right of freedom of speech, because you do not agree with them?
How many people have environmentalist killed? How many people have politicians gotten killed in wars and coups, to support their political agenda? (Iraq, coup in Iran, USA sending chemical weapons for Saddam to use, support brutal dictators in south America.) - fuse13, on 11/04/2008, -0/+4how is that even slightly realistic?
- CatsAreGods, on 11/04/2008, -1/+5No, they're actually the other white meat...long pig FTW.
- nsmile, on 11/04/2008, -3/+6I don't know if it's a guilt trip when our lives depend on it.
- hazyeight, on 11/05/2008, -0/+3"Each individual has a smaller impact on the environment than they did 30 years ago because of technological improvement and there's no reason to think that this trend will change."
-source for this fact... pulled from your ass - zachattack5491, on 11/04/2008, -3/+6The solution begins with everyone. 90% of this worlds idea of the meaning of life is to reproduce.
- inactive, on 11/04/2008, -1/+4This is why we need space exploration. Don't listen to the morons who says "It would be centuries before we needed it!!" They're the same ones whining about a lack of viable alternative energy sources, saying "It should have been done long ago!"
- bipolarruledout, on 11/04/2008, -1/+4Nothing on the plastic vortex?
- kizmar, on 11/04/2008, -1/+4Umm... aren't we the only race on this planet that DOES think into the future?
There are repeating cycles on this planet that span way beyond our records or comprehension. Nothing we say or do will change these cycles. Do you think the dinosaurs became extinct just because they didn't think far enough into the future? - fuse13, on 11/04/2008, -3/+6Maybe the person that considers mass killing to be a solution should be the nazi, nazi.
- 1smartguy, on 11/04/2008, -2/+4Judging from many of the comments here, most of you folks don't really give a ***** or you don't believe it because you can't see it from your basement computer.
- MikiMac, on 11/04/2008, -0/+2"Do you think the dinosaurs became extinct just because they didn't think far enough into the future?"
Well, they occupied this planet for how long? was it over 100,000,000 years?
and how long humans?
"Umm... aren't we the only race on this planet that DOES think into the future?"
No.
and what I meant was that we don't care.
if someone was to tell you that 1000 generations from now, everyone will die, you will probably say...so what?! - carbonetc, on 11/04/2008, -1/+3We need to experience an instance of environmental collapse that's so dramatic and terrible and world-changing that in the future (assuming we have one) we cite it just as often as we bring up Hitler and the Nazis today. Until then the message will never get through our thick skulls. I wish it didn't have to be that way, but at this point I don't think it can be avoided.
- inactive, on 11/04/2008, -0/+2WTF i swear i'm not lying
see: http://revision3.com/7-environmental-problems-that ... - imitokay, on 11/04/2008, -1/+3we're ******
- NotYourProdigy, on 11/04/2008, -2/+4That's right, these problems are real. Stop ignoring it. We have to do something sooner or later.
- AmyVernon, on 11/03/2008, -9/+11we're doomed!!!
- Hetman, on 11/04/2008, -4/+6That sux. But with a population boom we could always eat each other if it became that bad. Soylent green you say Nay I say the other red meat. I think humans are red meat I am not for sure about that.
- fuse13, on 11/04/2008, -0/+2"Nothing we say or do will change these cycles."
This is *****. So we cannot possibly affect the climate? What are you basing this on?
If someone wants to argue that the natural causes are much greater than man's, I wont agree with them, but I will at least take them seriously. When people make absolute statements based on absolutely nothing I have to conclude they have already made thier mind up. - LauraSchleifer, on 11/04/2008, -2/+4This is one of the scariest articles I've read---1 out of every 4 species of mammals threatened with extinction?!?--and what makes it even more poignant is that I just read the article on Sarah Palin (you know, that great Friend of the Earth who hunts moos for fun, guns down wolves from helicopters, and of course put the Alaskan wilderness on the block for a bit of oil) and why America is increasingly disinterested in the culture wars she drums up when faced with real crisis.
The destruction of the natural world is a real crisis. Are people listening? One way to find out is to keep an eye on a new website called perspctv.com http://www.perspctv.com which tracks public opinion and media attention on different people and issues through a unique method of measuring the number of times someone or something is mentioned in the media and the blogosphere. Right now, they're tracking the election, but after tomorrow it'll be issue based, and you can see what's getting the most attention. Hopefully, we'll see a dramatic rise in the number of people concerned about the earth burning as opposed to, say, flag burning, - sheagunther42, on 11/04/2008, -0/+2No, that's Earthfirst.org. EarthFirst.com is just a green blog.
- wunksta, on 11/04/2008, -0/+2missing water shortage.
- Gizza, on 11/04/2008, -0/+2Solve #1 and you solve the rest.
- inactive, on 11/04/2008, -0/+2I feel very threatened by your suggestion.
- inactive, on 11/04/2008, -0/+2Eh, I was just being bitter and cynical. It just shocks me sometimes that something so simple as "raping our environment's going to get us killed" seems so difficult for so many of us to comprehend.
- rheaume, on 11/04/2008, -3/+5McCain's response? its all lies
Vote tomorrow
Obama 08 - partrow, on 11/04/2008, -0/+2Palm oil plantations are not destroying orangs. It is the destruction of their natural habitat that is destroying them. Please be accurate.
A more important case for grains is corn, where a large portion of corn grown is supplying 3% of our fuel in the form of ethanol. When are we going to stop this subsidized madness to pay back the votes?
The frontrunner in the Presidential election is the largest supporter of ethanol ever. Let's hope his vote paybacks are not translated into more Congressional payoffs to the farmers for ethanol. - goodinohio, on 11/04/2008, -2/+4"Threatened", "under threat" can mean anything.
