- imacommi, on 02/11/2008, -1/+32Definitely part of the problem. I'm not a big hippie but I would love to see green alternatives and I would be willing to pay more for them if I had too.
- airwalkery2k, on 02/11/2008, -3/+33Probably? Are you sure?
You might be bitten by a vampire or a werewolf, forcing yourself to live for eternity fighting a war raging between the two sides. Have you ever ruled out that possibility? - AllLitUp, on 02/11/2008, -12/+28***** the RIAA!
- JordanTW90, on 02/11/2008, -2/+14And you want these people to run your healthcare. Imagine 612 years for to get your broken arm reset.

- Buelldozer, on 02/11/2008, -2/+12Concerned about the environment but driving at 100MPH? Look folks, it's Al Gore's son!
- NYC83, on 02/11/2008, -2/+10another way of looking at the list: it's probably a shorter wait than the wait for tickets to the masters

Geneticists Discover a Way to Extend Lifespans to 800 Years
http://digg.com/general_sciences/Geneticists_Disco ... - bigbill780, on 02/11/2008, -0/+7I dont get why companies dont just build wind farms in the ocean. It seems to be pretty abundant out there...
- aaronhoffmeyer, on 02/11/2008, -1/+8They are already doing it ...
http://w1.siemens.com/answers/en/index.htm?page=en ... - LowFuel, on 02/11/2008, -1/+8It's because of all the NIMBO's.
- InspectorGadget, on 02/11/2008, -0/+7Hey! You can't build a windmill there! You'll block the wind to MY windmill! Its basic physics, like people riding dinosaurs back when Jesus was in charge and everyone had oil!
- fixty, on 02/11/2008, -2/+9Neither is listening to you.
- jbenson2, on 02/12/2008, -1/+8If you want to build a windfarm in Massachusetts, you will have a much longer wait - thanks to Ted Kennedy's hypocritical stance on the environment. Not in my back yard!
- fixty, on 02/11/2008, -1/+7That blows.
- down4twenty, on 02/11/2008, -2/+7too costly to route the power back to civilization
- i208khonsu, on 02/12/2008, -1/+6Did anybody RTFM? In the article it says that the waiting period is "FIFTY YEARS", not 612.
- getrealnow, on 02/12/2008, -0/+4 you stealing my air is a waste
- zippy757, on 02/11/2008, -0/+4..in doing a little research, I think the headlines and the ECO-tabloid are little biased on their reporting. This is only for attaching your energy to the big bad ass grid, like the ones you see from airplanes...This doesn't have anything to do with setting up a windmill for your home, farm or town. Those a localized transmissions.
Not sure what the agenda of that web site is... Since random connections to the big bad ass grid would allow any bozo to bring it down, I welcome the heavy inspection. - Kerath, on 02/12/2008, -0/+4http://www.ted.com/talks/view/id/153
"When he was just 14 years old, Malawian inventor William Kamkwamba built his family an electricity-generating windmill from spare parts, working from rough plans he found in a library book." - tgc1, on 02/12/2008, -0/+4So don't connect them to the existing power lines then. Create a local co-operative and build the damn thing yourselves. The great thing about green energy is that it's EVERYWHERE. Not limited by point of production as with todays power. Which is probably what's pissing all these energy companies off. If free energy is everywhere, and anyone can get it, they'll be out of business very soon. Muahahahahahahahaa (laughing diabolically at energy companies).
- loup, on 02/12/2008, -2/+6please provide information on a better alternative to coal burning plants that will work on a large enough scale to provide an equal amount of energy to what coal burning is currently providing.
- akamurph, on 02/12/2008, -0/+3Not sure where you get your facts from, but my Grandma lives in BFE (middle/northern part of south dakota) where they have a town of 50 people). These wind people all came out and surveyed all parts of the land and are now building these wind farms in the windiest parts (and paying the farmers a nice chunk of change to let them build them on their land). I visited one and they seem to know what they are doing and if you haven't been to BFE (middle/northern part of south dakota) you can see forever and it's windy as hell!!
- inactive, on 02/12/2008, -0/+3fire those people who will not change their ways.
- kirwoodd, on 02/12/2008, -0/+2Yeah I read it the same way. You can put up your own wind mill and not need their approval.
Note that a at least one college in MN has put in wind powered generators recently, I guess that they are not giving their left overs to the grid.
- truck87bp, on 02/12/2008, -0/+2The solution is quite simple actually.
The Midwest Independent Transmission System (MISO), the organization in charge of the power lines, has to approve every new project that will connect to existing power lines.
Don't connect the wind mills to the grid. Wire all new homes with 2 sets independent of wires. Red dot plugs used for grid connections when the wind stops blowing and Green plugs with the wind blowing. Same with light switches. Supply all new subdivisions with their own wind mill and make them totally independent of the Grid.
Skip the approval process. - NoCt1, on 02/11/2008, -1/+3My eyes are bad i guess thought the s was an a... that sucks.... and of course digg timed out on the edit to make it a better comment
- Lewie, on 02/12/2008, -1/+3What would happen? We'd have 1) A proprietary system run by coal companies, who deny any outside companies from sharing in the energy sector; 2) no regulations, creating havoc on 'the grid'. If your electronics blew up, or you lose power, your power company blames the neighboring company for the mess, and you don't receive power until one of them yields.
Yes, bureaucracies can be inefficient and time-consuming, but EVERY well-run company and government uses a system of bureaucracy, because it IS the most efficient way to get things done on a massive level. - LeeSoong, on 02/12/2008, -0/+2sounds like a lot of hot air to me . . .
- neutrascrub, on 02/11/2008, -0/+2actually cooling it is much more effective

- Lewie, on 02/12/2008, -0/+2If you rent out an office building, do you get a share of the renter's profits?
- Gerz1219, on 02/12/2008, -0/+2Didn't realize a manual came with this article.
Doesn't even a fifty year wait strike you as slightly excessive, considering anyone old enough to file a proposal will likely be dead by the time it's approved? - whataboutdave, on 02/11/2008, -4/+6Three cheers for bureaucracy.
This mess would never happen in a truly free market. - droopypooper, on 02/11/2008, -2/+3Minnesota, i love you but you're bringing me down.
- birdly, on 02/12/2008, -1/+2We love you too. Sorry.
- pands, on 02/17/2008, -0/+1actually plugging it is the most efficient means of administration.
- rkzda, on 02/12/2008, -0/+1The farmers should get more than a chunk just to build there, what percentage of profits do they get?
