50 Quick, Painless Ways You Can Help the Environment Today
blog.blogactionday.com — Playing your part to help the environment doesn ’t have to be difficult, time-consuming, or sweeping. You can help out in little ways, making gradual changes, baby steps. Starting today. Yes, you can do some of these tips today. You can probably do a dozen today, if you put an effort into it. But all you have to do is one of these tips. Just one.

- digg it
- steinalec, on 10/11/2007, -8/+2dont fart
- steinalec, on 10/11/2007, -5/+2oh come on it was funny
- truegodofwar, on 10/16/2007, -2/+1Methane is an alternative fuel, *****.
- Wacer, on 10/16/2007, -2/+1Get rid of myself so I don't keep making a mess of the planet.
- cmpshotty, on 10/16/2007, -2/+15A list of 50?!?!? This is digg. My attention span doesn't exceed 10.
- DocHoliday22, on 10/11/2007, -2/+1Most lists on Digg are in excess of 10....
- DankLogic, on 10/11/2007, -1/+1Dugg almost exclusively for the awesome graphic design
- JerodSlay, on 10/11/2007, -1/+2Don't worry, by 30, they start saying "buy a smaller car, buy a smaller house." While these certainly help the environment, they aren't "painless things to do today"
- Wacer, on 10/11/2007, -1/+1Depends on your frame of mind and how materialistic you are.
- truegodofwar, on 10/11/2007, -1/+2Article should have been, "BREAKING: 5 top ten lists of ways you can help the environment. (pics).
- histgyro, on 10/11/2007, -0/+0even if we follow 10 of them...it will be great
- kahlessreborn, on 10/11/2007, -3/+2Good list some of them actually don't help the environment that much, but i do most of them already so yeah. Give them a try also.
- LocalDocal, on 10/11/2007, -0/+4Well, technically, any single one of those would help the environment tremendously...if a large enough number of people does them. However, I do find it curious that among that listed as 'painless' includes: Cleaning up various areas you happen to go to, planting trees, organizing a clean-up, avoiding fast food, coating your roof, filling your toilet tank, and etc.
I don't know. Perhaps the author of this list has an entirely different definition of a 'painless task' than I do, but from my perspective, there's kind of a difference between asking someone to buy used or turn off the TV for an hour...and asking them to buy a certain type of car or house. Actually, from my perspective, getting people to do most of the things on this list ranks anywhere from unlikely to impossible. - Wacer, on 10/11/2007, -0/+2Well I can see one. How about everyone just wash their clothes in cold water. Have the washing machine hooked up so no matter how the knobs are set, cold water will enter the system only. I have not washed clothes in anything other than cold and it works fine. Using heated water is scam.

- bigbill780, on 10/11/2007, -1/+6Im pretty sure half of those wouldnt be considered painless... have you ever tried using a reel lawn mower?
- Smight, on 10/14/2007, -3/+2I prefer a real lawnmower.
- JerodSlay, on 10/11/2007, -1/+2Or buying a new house?
- uhperson, on 10/11/2007, -1/+2Yeah, I have. I use one every other day. I actually think it's less of a pain in the ass than a stupid gas lawnmower...
- Wacer, on 10/11/2007, -1/+2Reel lawn mowers are not bad unless you get lazy and let the grass get long. If you are going to use a manual mower, especially if its used, make sure the blades are sharp as dull blades make for a lot more work. Otherwise they are fun to use and give a little exercise.
- dustmote, on 10/11/2007, -1/+4If only everyone would read these and follow them too....
It's not hard! - DocHoliday22, on 10/11/2007, -1/+10Actually guys even if you debate that global warming is a myth, that it's the Earth's natural cycle, some of those listed can save you some money in the long run.
- SpykerSpeed, on 10/12/2007, -10/+5I'm so sick of hearing about ways I can help the environment, that I actually want to proactively destroy it.
- avihappy, on 10/11/2007, -3/+1Easy. Live in a huge McMansion on the edge of an Urban area, buy a H1 Hummer, take as long a shower you want, buy a 1000w PSU for your computer, club a few animals now and then (and burn their bodies). It also helps if you switch to incandescent bulbs (big ones) and leave the lights on all day. Buy a 100" Plasma and leave it on as long as you like (and run the AC @ 50F to keep it cool). Also, buy the cheapest plastic crap you want and toss it when you are done anywhere you like. When your tap leaks, it's perfectly OK. If you want, eat McDonalds everyday (though it may harm your health) and toss the wrappers freely. It's easy, fun, and convenient! And pricey. Oh, and make sure you never recycle, it's a sin.

- p0s3r, on 10/12/2007, -9/+7Eat meat, don't eat soybeans. Veganism and their soybeans are a leading cause of global warming.
- Wacer, on 10/11/2007, -0/+3Eating meat is not bad. Eating soybeans is not bad. Eating cows that eat soybeans is bad. Soybeans are bad for the rain forest as they are burining it down to grow the damn things.
- fudgeigor, on 10/12/2007, -6/+3There really isn't a reason to not be doing these, they are easy as hell, the only one I don't do is the "buy a smaller car" one, ***** that, I love my Cadillac.
- bingobongony, on 10/11/2007, -4/+3Just to point out how stupid this list is...#21. Points out that fast food restaurants are the biggest polluters for the envivronment. Mentions one of the ways they do that is the amount of beef they have to raise. So they suggest eating at a sit down restaurant.
Yeah...because a hamburger that you eat at a sit down restautart does not come from the same animal that one from a fast food restaurant does! Seriously..what good does making fast food restaurants hurt the environment a tiny bit less do if it means yyou are making a sit down restaurant hurt it a tiny bit more?- Wacer, on 10/11/2007, -2/+1I think they are saying that sales of beef will slow some as people actually have to sit and wait for their food. Fast food pushes so much beef through their doors in such a quick way that it hurts the environment. Especially with all the chemicals and ***** they have to do to get that beef to market really fast. Sit down restaurants are better anyways as the fast food crap turns all people and general society into robots for consumerism,
- brotherfranciz, on 10/11/2007, -1/+1Fast food restaurants use intensive methods to cook food and also purchase ingredients that were produced intensively. That is how they manage to serve "fast". Whereas sit-down restaurants use relatively "natural" ingredients that are not grown intensively, and they take their time to cook the food.
- schnikies79, on 10/11/2007, -0/+5Good list and I do several already. The manual lawnmower won't quite work for my yard though as it's a little less than 2 acres and then I have to mow a few more acres of field, though not as often. The field gets a full sized tractor, the yard gets a lawn tractor.
Can't telecommute unfortunately as I work in a lab.
What the hell is coating the roof? My roof is shingled and I do plan to move it to metal at some point but I've never heard of anything painting their roof.- BigJuiceMan, on 10/11/2007, -0/+4just climb up on your roof and throw a couple of coats of paint up there. you'll see...oh, you'll see!
- Wacer, on 10/11/2007, -2/+1You work in a lab? Lab workers are suppose to live in the lab! /jk
- sock2828, on 10/11/2007, -5/+1I don't believe in the inviroment
- dykemoney, on 10/11/2007, -1/+0Use acryllic paint. : Acrylic does not mean water based. Acrylic can be water based or oil based. It's just a hard paint, like car paint. He must have meant water based or Latex.
Just nitpicking I guess. - L0g1X, on 10/11/2007, -3/+4Here's another one:
Use your hand to open the door instead of pressing the automatic door opener button for disabled people. Every time you press that red button, you're using enough electricity to open a door. Also, the automatic door opener tends to leave the door opened for a longer period of time allowing more heat to escape from the building which means more wasted electricity. So next time you press that red button, ask yourself if you're doing it because you're disabled or if you're doing it just to waste electricity. - paulbyrnes, on 10/12/2007, -4/+3Spend less time on the Internet writing stupid blogs.
- dasunst3r, on 10/11/2007, -1/+5#51: Replace bottled water with a Brita pitcher and a 32 oz. reusable bottle: $7.50 (at worst) is good for 40 gallons of filtration. Your daily routine: Fill, consume, wash, repeat. Saves money (in the long run), saves a good bit on materials, etc.
- EmailAddress, on 10/12/2007, -5/+3Seems like a prison cell would fulfill all 50.
- BigJuiceMan, on 10/11/2007, -0/+3here is another one. If your recycling bin isn't full, don't put it out! That way the truck doesn't have to stop for a 1/4 full bin.
- greg9683, on 10/11/2007, -0/+4"Clean up.
If you go to the beach or a park, leave it cleaner than when you got there. Pick up some cans and other trash that were there when you arrived. Takes a couple minutes, and makes the world a nicer place to live in."
This is the saddest thing. It should be common place. We are so lazy that we cannot clean up after ourselves. - creativeslice, on 10/11/2007, -1/+2Really nice list of easy to do items. It's amazing to me how many of these items people simply do not think about as they go about every day life.
- truegodofwar, on 10/11/2007, -3/+5Best way: Just Kill yourself. The earth doesn't need your sorry ass anyway.
- Wacer, on 10/11/2007, -0/+2How about plugging your cars' block heater instead of heating the while garage.
Another is putting a rug or towel along the bottom of your doors leading outside to keep the cold from seeping into the house.
Putting an extra blanket on the bed instead of keeping the heat up all night.
There are a lot less painless ones than the ones from the article that people need to remember. - RicktheBrick, on 10/11/2007, -1/+1I do not think buying a smaller house is anywhere close to being painless. It is a big expensive and long process.
- lunigma, on 10/11/2007, -0/+0Living in an apartment instead of a house is a lot better for the environment. You don't have as many people with lawns being watered every day.
Someone needs to make a similar list for those of us who live in apartments. A lot of the points on the list don't apply to apartment dwellers at all. - Sirlolalot, on 10/11/2007, -0/+1#3 Don’t print at least once today,
Well lets see ive had a pc for about 4 years & never owned a printer, so that means me and 1459 other diggers are ok for today :) - TheKappa, on 10/11/2007, -0/+1Why doesn't this have more diggs?
- MyTypes, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Let's stay positive and make it work. I think people need to take action, most people don't they are just lazy. But blogging and making a difference requires us to encourage others. The hard work is just doing it, but it's really easy to do something, if you love what you do. Pass it on folks, your friends at http://MyTypes.com
