- BarbaraKolbe, on 10/11/2007, -4/+25Found at a site selling "Private Communities." Dugg down for that...
- marv1983, on 10/11/2007, -3/+19What about the rest of the world lets think outside the box a little
- jamie06260, on 10/10/2007, -0/+10I will say that Boston DOES have a very good mass transit system, I use it all the time. However, I was not aware of the public smoking ban, which I don't really think is actually enforced, or at least not when I have been out and about.
Boston is a nice city, but if that is one of the most environmentally friendly cities in the country, we need to step up our game. - essellewohc, on 10/11/2007, -0/+9Ignore this comment, I missed out the "US Private Communities" header. Sorry.
- denmmurray, on 10/10/2007, -1/+8Cool, My current hometown Chattanooga, TN is on there and my original hometown Eugene, Or...everyone should move to Eugene
- inactive, on 10/10/2007, -0/+6Why isn't Los Angeles in there?
Oh wait...We suck at not polluting - jhnewt, on 10/10/2007, -0/+6Honolulu is environmentally friendly because it burns 500,000 tons of trash? Wouldn't that, you know, cause air pollution?
- mozillaman0, on 10/10/2007, -0/+6Uhh...I live in Canada. You can kinda live anywhere here, save the GTA.
- murf43143, on 10/10/2007, -0/+6" Honolulu, Hawaii
This tropical paradise is a good place to vacation and to live. The Oahu aquifer provides plenty of fresh water and the city burns 500,000 tons of trash each year to limit how much accumulates in landfills. "
That is the 100% opposite of GREEN...
Wow that should be bottom 10 for that reason alone, not that it is much better in a landfill, but at least if it is in a landfill, when depolymerization or another relevant means it available cheap we can do something useful with it. Burn it = straight to the ozone. - inactive, on 10/11/2007, -0/+6Whew!!! For a minute I though you were going to miss my state. I live between the Atlantic and the Pacific Oceans.
- canha, on 10/10/2007, -2/+8So USA is the only country in the world to have enviromentally friendly cities eh?
Nice
(/sarcasm) - joebaloney, on 10/11/2007, -0/+6Absolutely. Commute 50 miles into the concrete jungle. You da greenie!
- Gustomucho, on 10/11/2007, -1/+6Should be : 27 Environmentally Friendly US Cities to Live... makes me think of the new chinese cookie message : If everyone around you is bad, it doesn't imply you are good.
- PaperDesigns, on 10/11/2007, -1/+6But some of those cities have the highest crime/murder rates. I guess there are a few other factors to consider when moving to a city.
- amfbjuan, on 10/11/2007, -0/+5- (US) Not even in the top 27 Environmentally Friendly Countries to Live -
"FINLAND is the world's most environmentally friendly country, and North Korea is its least. The US is placed 45th out of 146 nations, with Australia 13th and the UK 66th..."
http://www.newscientist.com/article/mg18524853.300 ... - Monkeywithacold, on 10/10/2007, -0/+5I thought Portland would make the list....On most other lists Portland is anywhere from number 1 to number 3.....
I live in Seattle now, and have to say Portland is much greener. - TheMidnight, on 10/10/2007, -0/+5Madison is a gorgeous city and the air is very clean, and you can ride a bike without getting run over. Go Badgers!
- hellathatguy, on 10/10/2007, -0/+5coming soon, a green walmart to each of these communities, helping to slash local businesses prices in half and get all the union workers!
- Error601, on 10/11/2007, -1/+5They actually list an abundance of trees for Charlottesville? I think you'd have to include every town on the Appalachian for that.
- derlin, on 10/11/2007, -0/+4Asheville, thats whats up...
- mrASSMAN, on 10/10/2007, -0/+4Seattle is on the list too.. they don't mention it, but I think 100% of our energy comes from hydropower. I'd say Seattle is the cleanest and greenest major city in America.
Also has one of the highest median income levels on the list :) ..in boston the houses cost $40k more and you get $7000 less income. Also ranked the #1 smartest city and fittest city in america several times. Seattle rules. - inactive, on 10/10/2007, -1/+5move to the environmental cities to ***** them up...that makes sense
- masterm1nd, on 10/10/2007, -2/+6Isn't that an oxymoron, city's are not environmentally friendly. Go live in a hole in the ground.
- COinOR, on 10/10/2007, -0/+4just moved to kc from eugene...the eug is an awesome town unless you want a good career.
- Dquinz63, on 10/16/2007, -2/+6Any list that includes Syracuse as environmentally friendly is highly questionable. Since local industry made the lake in Syracuse one of the most polluted bodies of water in the world. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Onondaga_Lake
Also bans on cigarette smoking do not have a big impact on the environment as cigarette smoke is way down on the list in terms of volume of air pollution. So that is about preventing the discomfort of the non smokers and not saving the environment. - joe90210, on 10/10/2007, -0/+4how the hell does anyone afford to live in californian cities? their income is roughly the same as all the other cities yet their houses cost 500k more!
- countmandible, on 11/15/2007, -0/+4Two comments. To the folks above who said 'Cities are not environmentally friendly': Sorry but cities are the most friendly way of housing all of the people. If you moved everyone from the cities out to rural areas, everything would be much less efficient. I suppose if what you are really saying is that population is a problem, I would agree with you.
Second point: I live in Seattle, and I have to say the SERIOUS addiction everyone here has to their cars and the leaves-something-to-be-desired transit system more than make up for the smoking ban. Hydroelectric is pretty good though (not as good as solar, but better than coal). - joebaloney, on 10/10/2007, -0/+4A lot of these cities are suburban cities with poor mass transit system. Every family owning 3 cars is not very green.
- MicrosoftBob, on 10/10/2007, -0/+4It does rule, but the traffic stinks. I learned to love public transit when I lived there. When I first moved there I sold my car and just rode around the city, people watching and checking out all the cool areas. Good times. Makes me want to move back....
- ONELOVE23, on 10/10/2007, -0/+4Hey. Where is Berkley Ca. Oh yea, too much pollution from toke smoke. I forgot.
- mmazing, on 10/10/2007, -0/+3Too bad this isn't a list of cities all around the world, such as Reykjavik, Iceland, which is run almost entirely on "green" energy sources.
"In the year 2006, 26.5 % of electricity generation in Iceland came from geothermal energy, 73.4 % from hydro power, and 0.1 % from fossil fuels."
From http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Geothermal_power_in_I ... - ausfahrt, on 10/16/2007, -0/+3why is your totally valid point about syracuse being dugg down
- nickv, on 10/10/2007, -0/+3Confused... Boston is on there because it has a "good public transportation system" and a "smoking ban" yet NYC isn't which has a MUCH better public transportation system (the best in the US in practical term) and was the FIRST large city to do the smoking ban (Boston replicated NYC a few years later... ) NYC has also made some bold green energy commitments ( http://www.nyc.gov/html/planyc2030/html/home/home ) ... and requires all City Gov't cars to be hybrids... Strange, that its missing when a place like Boston is there.
- OkydOky, on 10/11/2007, -0/+3Agreed.
Buried. Should have Included was only US cities in Title. - essellewohc, on 10/11/2007, -3/+6None in Asia?
- diggNewton, on 10/16/2007, -0/+3Syracuse?? Home of the country's most polluted lake.
- inactive, on 10/10/2007, -0/+3Oakland? Are you kidding me? Since when did Oakland become a good place to live?
- rpelayo, on 10/10/2007, -0/+3Couldn't agree more. But then this always happens. Someone from outside of the US would right "27 environmentally friendly cities in [insert country name here]" or even more likely, would have posted an article about "27 environmentally cities around the world".
What really freaked me out this time was the American flag not only on the banner but also in the favicon. - dattaway, on 10/10/2007, -0/+3Gangs.
- hmunkey, on 10/10/2007, -0/+2Read median incomes for most cities. They're usually around that or lower.
- archer75, on 10/10/2007, -0/+2Eugene is a damn hippie town. Not moving there.
- monkeybacon, on 10/10/2007, -0/+2This article is crap.
- WaltJay, on 10/10/2007, -0/+2Berkeley, California - Population: 102,743 - Median Income: $48,123 - Median House Value: $700,300
Everyone must either be very rich or dirt poor for the median income to be < $50k, and the median house value to be > $700k. . - phil.busch, on 10/10/2007, -0/+2I love Madison... nothing is better than walking down State Street on a nice day :)
- waalter, on 10/16/2007, -0/+2OK everyone, OK. We get it. A website called "U.S. Private Communities" lists cities in the U.S.
- f0rr3st, on 10/10/2007, -0/+2Wish I could digg you up more. The Blue Ridge Mountains are badass. I'll tell you what, when I leave the mountains for more than a few days I start feeling weird. Everything is so flat.
- ausfahrt, on 10/10/2007, -0/+2 "27 Environmentally Friendly Cities to Live." + In the US
- aneilwutang, on 10/11/2007, -0/+2Actually tobacco produces zero net carbon production... Which makes the article hilariously stupid in terms of talking about a smoking ban as 'environmentally friendly'...
- heppareppana, on 10/10/2007, -0/+2i have never seen people take any real actions to "go green" here in Finland and i've never considered my homecountry to be THAT clean.. But if we still top that list, i wonder how filthy and sh*tty are the places you people live in. Honestly this puzzles me.
- shortarabguy, on 10/13/2007, -0/+2http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Santa_Clara_County,_C ...
But you're right, Santa Clara is hardly indicative of the rest of the world. -
