25 Tips to Make Your Apartment an Eco Friendly Paradise
pyrmontvillage.com.au — Renting an apartment should not make you feel exempt from doing your part for the environment and saving yourself some money while you are at it. It may seem like most of the world is talking about “Going Green” but they are talking about their own homes and their cars. What about the apartment dwellers among us?

- B00Radley, on 08/06/2008, -3/+6I've heard cfl's can be dangerous if they pop?
- tufftugg, on 08/06/2008, -12/+2They are dangerous because of the frequency they put out:
Many of the new energy efficient compact fluorescent light bulbs produce high levels of radio frequency radiation "dirty electricity" (GS). Most also produce a harmful high frequency electric field (V/M) radiating several feet. Without question these electrical polluters are having a adverse impact on the health of those who've installed them in their homes.
http://www.emfsolutions.ca/compact_flourescent_bul ...- BigManOnCampus, on 08/06/2008, -0/+9So, these bulbs produce EMI in the frequencies used by AM radio.
And this EMI is dangerous and is making people sick...
So, AM radio broadcasts should then kill us, right? - cheezintern, on 08/06/2008, -0/+4Well I replaced all the lights in my apartment, around 12-15 total, and have yet to get sick....
"Without question these electrical polluters are having a adverse impact on the health of those who've installed them in their homes."...not likely, so me some scientific evidence. - TVarmy, on 08/13/2008, -0/+1O'Reilly broadcasts over AM where I live. If we could get him off the air where I live with this rhetoric, go for it.
- BigManOnCampus, on 08/06/2008, -0/+9So, these bulbs produce EMI in the frequencies used by AM radio.
- highlymodified, on 08/06/2008, -0/+8Yes, they contain a small amount of mercury vapor that actually produces the light.
It's not enough to warrant a HazMat team, but just try not to break them, and see what services are around for proper disposal if one does pop.- krnldmp, on 08/06/2008, -1/+4If its already broken you may as well just throw it away. The mercury vapor is already in the air. Best thing to do is open a bunch of windows an leave for a while.
The mercury content is still a fraction of what is used in the 4 and 8 foot fluorescent tubes. - dorkino, on 08/06/2008, -0/+2Yeah. Not really a big deal, especially to those of us who've experienced the pleasure of busting the long, cylindrical fluorescent bulbs when we were younger.
Maybe that's what's wrong with me. Or maybe I'm the reason for autistic kids. - TVarmy, on 08/06/2008, -0/+2Not too much to worry about. I believe the procedure is to leave the room for 15 minutes to clear the air, wipe up the pieces with a piece of paper into a plastic bag, seal it, then seal that inside a plastic bag, and drop it off at a hazardous waste center. If you're really scared, get the type with the plastic dome over the top, which gives you a layer of insurance if you drop one. More than I'd like to do, but not that big a deal. Moral of the story: Just be careful, maybe lay down a pillow under the fixture if you're working high up.
Even so, they prevent more mercury from being released from coal. Plus, they contain only 1/200th the mercury in one tooth filling. - nickkordesch, on 08/06/2008, -0/+2The sharp broken glass shards are more dangerous to you than the small amount of Hg vapor in these guys.
- krnldmp, on 08/06/2008, -1/+4If its already broken you may as well just throw it away. The mercury vapor is already in the air. Best thing to do is open a bunch of windows an leave for a while.
- protodon, on 08/06/2008, -1/+2so can balloons, you can't live your life in fear... okay you can.
- mikesbaker, on 08/06/2008, -0/+1mercury usually doesn't come out of balloons as is the case with CFLs
- teh_spazz, on 08/06/2008, -0/+2FYI,
Ace Hardware (only place I've noticed them) carry bags that can be had for free to properly dispose of the lights. I'm not sure where you take them, but they have bags with information. - troye, on 08/08/2008, -0/+1I heard of another fatal flaw of CFLs. Some scientist dude says that if CFLs operate above a certain temperature then it would decrease the lifespan of the bulb, and CFL bulbs would then have to be replaced more often than incandescent bulbs.
I think the report says like 57 degrees celsius or something like that then the CFL bulb would die in about 6 to 9 months. Frequent replacement of the bulbs leads to more waste and those tiny amounts of mercury add up when those bulbs hit the landfills. There is also a small electronic circuit in CFLs that regulate some farce I don't understand. The scientist dude said that this e-waste is also adding to dangerous polution.
I still use CFLs, but I don't know if they are operating out of temperature or not. What is a treehugger to do?

The last time I was there I noticed all these huge, electronic billboards on the side of I15 that were being powered by diesel generators. Seems like these would be a prime candidate to be replaced by a couple solar panels and a battery bank for each billboard.
Disclosure: I have no idea about the power requirements of said billboards.

- cubicledrone, on 08/06/2008, -10/+3Renting an apartment is like buying a ticket on one of those supersonic Japanese trains. Destination: poor house. Trying to make some dump into an eco-habitat is only going to make you *****-broke twice as fast. Buy something, even if you have to live in a campground. Seriously.
- tomarocco, on 08/06/2008, -1/+6*****. I rent in SoCal and am making out like a bandit compared to people who have bought here in the past 8 years. The ticket to avoiding the poor house is learning to live BELOW your means, not merely avoiding living above them.
- cubicledrone, on 08/06/2008, -4/+0You can't rent tap water in SoCal for less than four figures a month. You could make the mortgage on a five-bedroom palace for what a ***** two-bedroom dump costs while you sit gridlocked 35 miles from work six days a week.
The people digging the original article down know ***** about making rent. It's like ass fungus. It never goes away. Ever. Until you are *****-broke and riding a moving van. Renting is like troweling cash into a flushing toilet every four weeks.
Buy. - tomarocco, on 08/06/2008, -0/+1@cubicledrone: Misery loves company. Sounds to me like a vasectomy is what you need. Don't those crows keep you awake at night out there in that cornfield?
You do the math and tell me how you are going to pay the mortgage on a 1 bedroom 1 bath unit with a 1 car garage and a partial ocean view less than 5 minutes from downtown San Diego for less than $850 a month? No money down, of course.
Mortgages never go away. By the time you (very hypothetically) get something paid off in 30 years the property tax is as much as or more than the mortgage payment was, and then you ***** die! No thanks. Renting makes you a free agent. - geauxtig3rs, on 08/06/2008, -0/+2For me, renting makes more sense right now...I'm not going to be living where i am living for more than a year, and on top of the moving into a house from an apartment, there are many other expenses that come with a house, as well as more headache.
You need to buy yard tools to maintain your lawn, then pay for the gas or electricity to run them. You may have to commute several miles per day, when in my apartment, i can walk to work. I don't have to worry about property taxes, home repair bills, trash pickup bill, water bill. I have rent, insurance, and electricity. I can't find a house that by itself wouldnt cost more than the total of my rent and bills each month. That compounded with the fact that I won't be living here long enough to gain any equity on my house would be like "troweling cash into a flushing toilet every four weeks."
I would like to buy, but it isn't feasible for me at this point.....but thanks for the sweeping generalizations anyway. - grungemusic3001, on 08/06/2008, -0/+1@ tomarocco
renting is throwing your money away every single month. When you buy a house, even if it takes forever to completely pay it off, you are building equity in the house with every payment. If you move houses you don't lose all the equity you've built up over the years.
- cubicledrone, on 08/06/2008, -4/+0You can't rent tap water in SoCal for less than four figures a month. You could make the mortgage on a five-bedroom palace for what a ***** two-bedroom dump costs while you sit gridlocked 35 miles from work six days a week.
- dist0rtedwave, on 08/06/2008, -0/+1yeah, what a lot of people fail to take into account is that the money you can let sit in the bank while you are renting is going to grow faster than the value of your property for some time. Depending on how much of a downpayment you can make, how long you will be staying, and how well the market is doing, renting can easily be the best option financially.
- Gemfinder, on 08/07/2008, -0/+0I'm facing this quandary myself right now. They jacked the rent up in my complex because they just lost half the tenants owing to a business closing. It's not quite unsustainable now but it's heading there.
If legislation were passed that allowed renters to deduct their apartment rent from their taxes, like homeowners get to deduct mortgage interest from theirs, yeah, I'd say renting would be a fine way to shelter. But it ain't so.
But also remember, that many landlords can evict you anytime they want, for whatever reason, or no reason. Unless your apartment has a mail slot, you're WIDE OPEN to identity theft because all the thieves have to do is crack open the apartment mailboxes and swipe everything in there. This just happened to a friend of mine.
There's also the danger of getting your apartment sold out from under you when an owner decides to go condo. That happened to another friend. Her landlord wanted to sell the apartments as condos so pretty much everyone that didn't have the credit points in a heap enough to buy in, got their 30 days notice.
Eminent domain? That only protects homeowners, they have to be compensated and relocated by the state. If your apartment block gets eminent domained or condo'ed, SorryGoodLuck, sucks to be you, and you're starting over again from zero. And out a LOT of money, possibly enough money to put a down on a house.
Half of my class got financially evicted back in 2000 when the Dot-Com Boom was at its peak. Their landlords jacked up their rent 200% because they knew the money was out there and they could get it one way or another.
There's an old Irish blessing: "Land without rent to ye." If you rent, always remember, that ain't your home. It's a semi-comfortable bolthole at best, but you're only a couple weeks from a mad scramble with a stopwatch on your head.- tomarocco, on 08/07/2008, -1/+0It ain't your home if the bank owns it, either. You can't take it with you when you die, so you are really just renting anyway. Now that you know the truth you can continue living in denial.
- tomarocco, on 08/06/2008, -1/+6*****. I rent in SoCal and am making out like a bandit compared to people who have bought here in the past 8 years. The ticket to avoiding the poor house is learning to live BELOW your means, not merely avoiding living above them.

- dorkino, on 08/06/2008, -1/+8"#23 - Make sure that your appliances like your refrigerator is not only an energy efficient model, but that you maintain it the best you can."
This tip doesn't really apply well to apartment dwellers, since the fridge belongs to the landlord.- xutopia, on 08/06/2008, -1/+2Not everywhere. In montreal the east side mostly rents with appliances and the west side mostly without.
- dorkino, on 08/06/2008, -2/+3Ah, thanks. I wasn't aware. Every apartment I've lived in over the past 12 years has had fridge/stove/dishwasher and in some cases washer/dryer already installed.
- krnldmp, on 08/06/2008, -2/+2Just because the landlord owns something doesn't mean you should be stupid enough to use it all ***** up. You're supposed to be paying to have it properly maintained. If you find out your landlord doesn't care that the refrigerator's condenser coils are clogged with dust and dirt, maybe you should give someone else your money. The rest of the place is probably just as ***** up.

- srubens, on 08/06/2008, -4/+3compact florescent bulbs contain mercury. almost none of them are recycled properly. they end up in our landfill and contaminate the water supply as the mercury slowly sinks to the water table deep under the soil. Better to use more energy than contaminate our water supply. good old fashion bulbs are the environmental choice!
- Dachublez, on 08/06/2008, -0/+4Except that modern landfills have a barrier between the trash and the soil beneath so even though they may end up in landfills large amounts of mercury wont be showing up in your water any time soon. However I see were your coming from. The power/fuel something uses is only part of the total footprint of the object in question. You have to factor in all the energy/pollution used/created by the production and disposal/recycle process. Which is why a new Land rover is greener than a Prius All those batteries being produced and transported etc..

- Gravey9, on 08/06/2008, -3/+4Screw eco-friendly just make the cost of living for yourself minimal, thats the best and only way to live. If eco-friendly is necessary to do so than go for it but if you are incurring a cost or are uncomfortable and constantly maintaining eco-friendliness than it's pointless.
- kalvinb, on 08/07/2008, -1/+2I use CFLs because I like the light they produce and the reduction in heat. There was a story on the news awhile back about a kid who ate a lot of tuna. He got mercury poison. He stopped eating tuna. Problem went away. Unlike lead poisoning, mercury will work its way through your system and leave you not permanently damaged. So if you do break a CFL bulb, get a grip. Clean up the glass, clean up the area and don't worry about it.
- Graphixcon, on 08/07/2008, -2/+1does going green means to paint ur house green... and let in more of bugs
- Kzoo, on 08/07/2008, -0/+2Seems a large number of these things are just a matter of course -- like having blinds on the windows. . . that's a necessity in Florida, not for "being green" [though yes I suppose it has that effect] but keeping out as much heat as possible [and sometimes excessive light].

"Make sure that you check and replace your air conditioning filter as often as it needs to be. This also applies to any other appliance that you use in your home that has a filter. Any appliance that has a filter will run cleaner and use less energy if the filter is replaced on a regular basis."
I just moved and my filter had not been changed in who knows how long. So I changed it and instantly noticed the AC was blowing stronger! - jcorn1, on 08/08/2008, -0/+1Good reminders!

Works well in my shed anyways!
