- inactive, on 01/29/2008, -1/+16As much as I like recycling it's really nice to read a list that gives us some great ideas of how to reduce our impact.
- WikiEasy, on 01/29/2008, -4/+18If you REALLY care about the environment, stop having children. That alone will save a lot more in wasted resources than recycling or doing whatever is "in" these days.
But of course none of you would ever do that. You will only do as much as needed to feel good about yourselves, not enough to actually make an impact. - 89992, on 01/29/2008, -2/+13"Nothing will benefit human health and increase the chances for survival of life on earth as much as the evolution to a vegetarian diet." —Albert Einstein
- tuxerware, on 01/29/2008, -2/+13Spoken like a true American.
- rlalasz, on 01/29/2008, -0/+8It's interesting that the contributors focused on very simple steps that often made profound transformations in their lives. I think the virtual meeting vow that Christian Renaud took is especially valuable. How many of us could pull this off? Maybe more than we think, especially given plane fuel costs these days...
- inactive, on 01/29/2008, -0/+8the mower tip is very true, although it's a lot more feasible if you have a small yard
- cliffski, on 01/29/2008, -2/+9why is that greens can put forward government scientific experts and the intergovernmental panel on climate change, whereas the deniers put forward a horror novelist and 2 magicians?
- smacksaw, on 01/29/2008, -1/+8That woman made a great point about shellfish. That's one of those things that the more you learn about it the more you question how it's done.
I mean, we hear a lot about the rainforest being cut down to make room for grazing for cattle or palm oil, but at least that can be reversed. Destroying the ocean floor the way we do is just so much of a larger scale or irresponsibility. It's akin to a farmer harvesting a crop on an acre and then destroying 10 acres of arable land for no particular reason. - davidconnell, on 01/29/2008, -3/+10Some great tips here -- everything from old school composting to joining a distributed computing network that models the effects of climate change. All good stuff.
- inactive, on 01/29/2008, -1/+7My favorite is to turn off your computer when not in use. Look at it this way, it's the ultimate firewall.
Do you really NEED full remote access all day, everyday... even when you're sleeping? There are web hosting services for that. - SuperVepr308, on 01/29/2008, -1/+6"You will only do as much as needed to feel good about yourselves, not enough to actually make an impact.". *****-A, man. Right on.
- burkinaboy, on 01/29/2008, -4/+9Much as I like Penn & Teller (I even read Penn's mystery novel), I do not consider them experts on the environment, pollution nor recycling. And none of your so-called "experts" are reputable or publishing real, peer-reviewed science.
FAIL. - ibookfast, on 01/29/2008, -0/+4just a quick observation... why don't they make escalators only work when someone is using it... wouldn't it save energy if seldom used ones only worked when someone tripped a light and/or it had weight on it?
Also, please legalize Hemp for God's sake. - Googler1, on 01/29/2008, -2/+6Great everyday ideas, found some more helpful ways to go green over here.
http://www.goodhousekeeping.com/home/organizing/gr ... - bringmeupmusic, on 01/29/2008, -1/+5This is so fantastic. I really wish more people would come up with new ideas at helping the environment around them.

"Also stop acting like it is a fact that Global Warming was caused by humanity. Some experts still disagree on that."
Some experts? What, like the few "experts" that appear on Faux News and say Global Warming is a hoax? The majority of the scientific community agrees that Global Warming is caused by humanity. - tuxerware, on 01/29/2008, -0/+3Tha's true, good point :-)
- bitcloud, on 01/29/2008, -0/+3"economic liberty"
listen "anarcho-capitalism" shill...No matter how much you wish for it, libertarianism doesn't provide "economic liberty"
any system that allows corporations to infringe upon the rights of the individual by polluting their waterways, destroying their natural species, giving them cancer etc etc, and any system that denies those citizens the right to band together (into a government) in order to protect those freedoms - that ain't libertarianism... It's ignorance
Stop taking something beautiful like libertarianism and pretending it means "economic liberty" (economic liberty.. there's no such thing.. just liberty.. plain vanilla liberty) - rainierbeer, on 01/29/2008, -0/+3"probably need to consume an extra hundred grams"
Since when is probably an equation? I call BS on this, people shouldn't feel guilty for everything they do. Wanna save the environment? don't use digg, it uses energy and energy usage is bad. same logic. - jkramlich, on 01/29/2008, -0/+3Find free items to reuse so they don't end up in the landfill. http://www.gigoit.org
- bitcloud, on 01/29/2008, -0/+32 free-market, CATO institute member magicians...
conflict of interest much? - bitcloud, on 01/29/2008, -2/+5how about we call you an "enmoronmentalist"?
- mal1964, on 01/29/2008, -2/+4Those were great ideas, but can I just send you a check?
- JigoroKano, on 01/29/2008, -0/+2Actually if you had stayed awake during P&T then you would have learned that you should recycle aluminum.
- AriaStar, on 01/29/2008, -6/+8"Only put on your skin ingredients that you'd be able to eat as well."
Um, because making a mask from fresh avocado and mashed strawberries every night is out of my price range. $2 per avocado and $5 for the fresh berries at this time of year. $210 for face stuff each month versus the $20 I spend on Olay? I'll use the extra $190 to replenish my vodka supply.
"Take energy-efficient compact light bulbs on trips and give them out."
Um, yeah, because on the once-a-decade vacation I take I decided to buy an extra suitcase, using resources that could go to other products, so I can lug along light bulbs to pass out to people. I want my vacation to be about relaxing. Whenever I finally get to take one, that is. - rainierbeer, on 01/29/2008, -0/+2Well said, I totally agree.
- bitcloud, on 01/29/2008, -0/+2humans are very energy efficient...
8 people running up a flight of stairs would probably need to consume an extra hundred grams or so of food/energy
the lift on the other hand needs a lot more (especially considering it needs to move 8 people, plus a tonne of solid steel)
It's the same problem with cars... the "human energy equity" argument doesn't hold water... - rodrigo74, on 01/29/2008, -0/+2Not sure if I agree with that dude in the article that says that you can compensate for the computer being always on by running distributed computation projects like climateprediction.net on it; after all, programs like this make the CPU run even when the computer is idle, which means more energy consumption.
Just put the computer to sleep or hibernate, it´s not THAT hard.. - covertbadger, on 01/29/2008, -1/+3Alternatively, act like it's a fact that GW was caused by humanity, and still do nothing about it. You don't have to be a sceptic to be an apathetic *****.
- LokitheComplex, on 01/29/2008, -2/+4I'm for protecting the environment.
But individual action plans just nonsense.
Trying to make vague consumer choices compulsory through social pressure seems absurd. Even most hard core greens find it difficult to follow these. So what chance have the skeptics or the desperately poor?
The only solution is technology.
Focusing on anything else is a waste of time, politics and effort. - sodade, on 01/29/2008, -2/+4Nothing can top not breeding for long-term positive environmental impact.
How hard is it really? I once asked my ex why she so disparately wanted to have a baby - "it's natural!" was all she could say. Well, it is also natural that I beat people who piss me off over the head and yet I manage to refrain from doing so to my ongoing benefit.
Beating people over the head has become socially unacceptable - why isn't rampant breeding? - ryan83189, on 01/29/2008, -0/+2build a reel push mower bicycle, with tires that wash themselves in bleach and a light bulb dispenser with teleconference capabilities.
- blast_flame, on 01/29/2008, -0/+2Yes I stay on the computer all the time. I can not turn it off before I go to sleep because I use a laptop in bed until I suddenly fall asleep.
- triskele, on 01/29/2008, -0/+1I've broken both the HDPE and PC nalgene bottles. You're obviously not trying hard enough. Most of my outdoor experiences are in the non-summer 3 seasons. No bugs and no people. I've never had water coming out of a bottle of any kind that tasted like plastic. The old camelbacks were disgusting (the new ones still might be). Drinking out of them made me wanna vomit no matter what I did to try and neutralize the thing.
- schnikies79, on 01/29/2008, -0/+1If you don't want to turn it off. S3 suspend will basically shut it off, except you can still remotely access it I with WON).
- Coffeedemon, on 01/29/2008, -0/+1Funny how you claim anyone can aspire to heights of great knowledge from the depths of obscurity and unrelated positions and then make some BS statement about me working at McDonalds. That aside... Einstein took his job because he couldn't find a teaching position. He had already been experimenting and writing prior to graduation and ammassed credentials in the field in which he was to eventually become synonymous with.
Lets be serious here though - you're not actually comparing the two are you? There are lots of articulate folks out there - that does not make them any more of an authority on a subject. - triskele, on 01/29/2008, -0/+1When the hell did Nalgene bottles became to damn trendy with the wannabe environmentalists and outdoor types? They started out as a Laboratory grade plasitcware producer. Someone working in a lab somewhere along the line happened to be an outdoor type and realizing they didn't leak and stole a few from work. Someone in marketing caught one and started practically a whole new company. I use nalgene bottles and bladders for outdoor endeavors, but for every day stuff I use an empty vitamin water bottle I've had for probably 6 months now, and might I add that I fill it at the office water cooler. One more thing. They come in different sizes genius. Yes, even the "Nelgene Outdoor" ones.
- burkinaboy, on 01/29/2008, -0/+1So how bad is it that I dream of having a reel mower like that, yet I don't dream of owning a home?!
- triskele, on 01/29/2008, -0/+1We don't even have the proper infrastructure for recycling them here in the US. My father works for the DOE and they've converted most of his building over to CFbulbs. They don't have nearly the lifespan advertised and being as they're under the US gov't they have to dispose of them as haz waste, while Joe homeowner is gonna throw 'em in the trash double zip-locked if you're lucky. God forbid you break one accidentally and call the proper authorities. Expect a hefty clean-up bill.
- vikingcoder, on 01/29/2008, -0/+1Being a libertarian is a career?
Einstein submitted his work to scientific peer-review rather than as entertainment to the mass public.
This was posted by another AGW denier, wrongonce, just a few days ago.

Even if someone is wrong, by brutalizing them you say more about yourself and your position in the argument than their lack of knowledge. If that person has a point/argument, well, denigrating them reveals what you really are.
>>
note: "denier" is a descriptive term, not a pejorative. Anybody who denies something on nothing more than belief is a denier. - LokitheComplex, on 01/29/2008, -0/+1So you are planning on using force on the rest of the world?
- bitcloud, on 01/29/2008, -0/+1Industrialised nations/first world nations tend to balance out in birth rates.
The population increase comes in third and second world countries where the life expectancy isn't as good (It's a biological imperative) and through emigration from those countries to first world countries...
The best plan is to work our cars to electric, work our electricity system to solar, work our packaging to biodegradable and non-toxic and gift these discoveries to developing nations. - vikingcoder, on 01/29/2008, -1/+2I still wouldn't point to him in reference to an issue of science. I would cite the primary source.
- bitcloud, on 01/29/2008, -1/+2you're missing some data up there datastorageguy...
have a look at some power plant and auto-traffic maps and compare them to cancer maps...
have a look at some human population maps and compare them to other species population maps...
have a look at some garbage dump maps and compare them to ecology maps...
It's really not rocket science... climate change is a symptom of a much broader problem (the fact that we live in an ecosystem - ie a renewable system made up of organic compounds for billions of years, and suddenly in the last hundred we've begin seeding inorganic compounds, indeed compounds that actually DESTROY the organic compounds that WE are made of)
I'd suggest you educate yourself because you're doing little more than showing off your ignorance... - schnikies79, on 01/29/2008, -0/+1Nalgene doesn't break and it doesn't make the water taste like plastic. But like you, I typically use them outdoors. I spend most of the warm weather months outside and in the woods so they are great.
I've had the same one for years. (well, like 3 years) - 93ex, on 01/29/2008, -2/+3Clean my boots? Wash with a 10 percent bleach mixture? Why stop there? Spray down your tires and undercarraige of your vehicle, and while you're at it, wear a particulate filter and bio-hazard suit, heaven forbid anyhting tags along with you on your next hike.
- triskele, on 01/29/2008, -0/+1Don't forget not to decompose after you've gone through with it. Alternatively make sure there's enough Carbon Credits in your wallet/purse to cover the "emissions" of the bacteria that'll be working on your for the next few years.
- Coffeedemon, on 01/29/2008, -1/+2Tell me about it... a Magician - the very definition of a *professional liar* is going to give us the answers to such complex issues involving intersections of culture, economy, geography and philosophy from all points on the globe.
- vikingcoder, on 01/29/2008, -0/+1A press release published by a think tank and public policy research organization, the Hudson Institute, is not a reputable source.
- rkef, on 01/29/2008, -0/+1parsing... parsing... system err... or... *explodes*
