- whataboutdave, on 12/05/2007, -0/+19I have no problem with people rebuilding there. I just don't want to be the one to pay for it. Tax money is not free money.
- sotopheavy, on 12/05/2007, -2/+16These people don't need houses they need house boats. They live in a floodplain below sea level and history has been shown to repeat itself.
- deadnoob, on 12/05/2007, -2/+12why are all the "people" in the houses black?.. oh yea.
- KevinWhite, on 12/05/2007, -1/+8When hurricane hazel hit Toronto (yes, a hurricane, I'm not making it up) there were tons of homes on the flood-plain completely washed away. After the insurance paid the damages, the government bought all the land and converted all the flood-plains into parks making sure no one could ever build there again.
- DrinkPaint, on 12/05/2007, -1/+6Traditional architecture is dead
- Erowid, on 12/05/2007, -0/+3Normally I'd agree, but the blog has all the pics on 1 page.
- jkizzle, on 12/05/2007, -4/+7sure they may be green, but are they new orleans? replacing the tradition with technology is not always the answer. we architects and environmentalists need to realize we are building for both the environment and the people who dwell in it.
not that green is bad, its important and inevitable. but why not implement it in a more nola fashion? - zombies187, on 12/05/2007, -0/+3Insurance companies are refusing to pay white people as well as black. You don't know what you are talking about. Sadly, you fit right in on THIS site.
- phogasmic, on 12/05/2007, -0/+3If they actually build sustainable low income housing in New Orleans I think it will attract people down there. Its a hell hole now, but when it comes back it is going to a gold mine I think. Look at the other cities that have rebuilt themselves after a disaster, like San Francisco which almost fell off the face of the earth in 1906. Now it is one of the most expensive places to live in the US
- zombies187, on 12/05/2007, -1/+3It makes me sad to read all these comments and come away with the impression that the digg community is actively hoping New Orleans doesn't rebuild. Its supposed to be so liberal here but I don't find it to be a compassionate place. I guess I'm asking too much... I just want a website that doesn't wish the city where my people grew up for hundreds of years didn't exist.
- g2g079, on 12/05/2007, -0/+2The lower 9th ward needs houses 15ft or so off the ground or they are going to have to float. Did the people designing these even see the houses with water up to the roofs? These look like these will blow apart faster than a FEMA trailer. They definitely don't have the New Orleans design. People need house space not yards. Go there and then start designing.
- jsams81, on 06/26/2009, -1/+3if any of those designs actually go into production it will be the 2nd worst disaster to happen to new orleans.
- sagat, on 12/05/2007, -2/+3Not 1, not a single one is designed to match the architecture New Orleans is recognised for.
- dev41, on 12/05/2007, -0/+1I have to admit the one by MVRDV is a little outlandish, but the others answer the call for safe, affordable, green housing in an area that is subject to weather issues.
- g2g079, on 12/05/2007, -1/+2The defiantly are not for the 9th Ward.
- B5tKUnT1, on 12/06/2007, -0/+1Buried cause it's an image in the News section...
- jeddyftb, on 12/05/2007, -1/+2I drove through the lower ninth over the summer and my biggest question is "can it float?"
Sooner or later that's all that will matter. - hammerattack, on 12/05/2007, -0/+1These houses look horrible. They might work in California where people enjoy the unusual and obtuse, but people... this is N'awlins. Architecture ring a bell?
- urbancore, on 12/05/2007, -2/+3Great coverage..
- g2g079, on 12/05/2007, -0/+1These houses couldn't last in uptown let alone the 9th ward.
- adrianmonk, on 12/05/2007, -0/+1Believe it or not, in the South, a lot of the people who live here *are* black. This isn't California or New England. If you were designing houses to be built in China, would you draw Chinese people in them?
- spiker611, on 12/05/2007, -2/+3A lot of those I personally find much too modern looking and cold. I like a house to look and feel warm, cozy, and friendly.
- carpespasm, on 12/05/2007, -2/+3too bad these designs aren't designed to be resistant to hurricanes since they have lots of overhangs. Some of them look like they're trying to hint at being on stilts, but the stilts are no higher than the houses were already. They either need to build them water-tight, above the flood lines, or make them like pill-boxes that can be easily rebuilt when they're flooded out and smashed on by another hurricane.
- g2g079, on 12/05/2007, -0/+1you already paid for it but the corrupt LA government is using the money differently.
- HanSolo69, on 12/05/2007, -0/+11. Build away from shoddy retaining walls. At maybe at least, or even above, sea level.
- eatspaste, on 12/06/2007, -0/+1Then you've never been to the 9th ward. I had some crack head try to sell me a stethoscope, a box of nails, and a faucet all in the same transaction.
- phogasmic, on 12/07/2007, -0/+1150,000, if I could find a mortgage like that, I'd be all over it. If NEw ORleans build these houses, its going to attract the kind of people who can afford 150,000 dollar mortages and then some
- zombies187, on 12/09/2007, -0/+1"The levees were NOT built to spec, you're right, but they weren't spec'd to withstand (near) Category 5, anyway."
Yes they were. Also, the storm that hit New Orleans was a category three. In the ocean, at it's height, it was a 5. The levees SHOULD have held.
You obviously don't know much about this town if you think the issue stops at the 9. We are ALSO talking about the entire rest of the city. Hundreds of thousands of people who work, go to school, TEACH school, ect. Sorry, but the MSM mythology that this happened to poor people who are on welfare or didn't buy insurance is not true. The insurance companies are having record year after record year on OUR backs. They are crafting new laws to regulate housing that benefits these very same insurance companies. I can't figure out why anyone would think that if government incompetence destroys your insured home, that no one is held accountable. America is following in a long tradition of blaming the victim.
"And your sept 11th rebuttle: Are you ***** serious? Even if you believe that it was the government that somehow allowed or pushed that attack, its a damn big pill to swallow to say that it WILL happen again sometime. It's possible, but its nowhere near as plausible as another hurricane throwing a knock out punch to New Orleans again."
Uhhh... I never said the gov pushed the attack. All I said was that the gov failed to protect lower Manhattan, and that there would be another terrorist attack on America someday in the future. It's not that crazy. I just can't help but notice how much money and effort and enthusiasm goes to protecting us from terrorism.
Also, I fully expect that our inaction as a nation on the issue of wetland restoration will lead to a 'knock out punch.' I'm just suggesting that America would regret it. - shellnet, on 12/06/2007, -0/+1Build and ark with solar sails.
- rodbibeau, on 12/05/2007, -0/+1wow, that was the most racial and stereotypical thing I have seen in a while.
- thugok, on 12/06/2007, -0/+1The founding of the city.
- DrinkPaint, on 12/05/2007, -1/+2It's the year 2007, not 1897, we need to build for today.
- adooga, on 12/05/2007, -0/+1Perhaps one positive thing to come out of the disaster in New Orleans will be a lot of environmentally thought out homes with solar power etc.
Sustainable technology is often more expensive to retro-fit than to start from scratch with, so this may be a rare opportunity to install lots of "green tech", and not just on a home by home basis either.
When you have to rebuild EVERYTHING, there must be many opportunities to think outside of the paradigm. - litleboyuranium, on 12/05/2007, -1/+2100 year storm??......um...maybe not.
- bigwave111, on 12/05/2007, -0/+1I just don't understand it. Is the point of rebuilding to say, "Well, Nature got us this time, but we will prevail!" At what point will they realize it's not a war to be won? I'm sorry but it just doesn't seem to be worth endangering the lives nor spending the money--building under sea level in that area just isn't sensible.
- Rodalli, on 12/05/2007, -0/+1Seriously. Not to mention that most post-modern architecture is absolute ***** and will look more like ***** sitting next to beautiful, antiquated buildings that abound in New Orleans.
- deadnoob, on 12/05/2007, -0/+1its called sarcasm.
- adrianmonk, on 12/05/2007, -0/+1sagat didn't say they had to use the same building techniques and the same standards. He said match. As in, "Does this shirt go with these trousers?".
- breckinshire, on 12/05/2007, -0/+1What was the first?

http://www.10neen.com/v/ - DeusExVerra, on 12/06/2007, -0/+0It's not a once in a 100 year storm. You've just gotten damn lucky. The next few decades are going to be packed with above average, high intensity hurricanes. You're playing a game of roulette to say "it wont happen again for another 100 years." And lets say you're right. Lets say it probably wont happen till your great grand kids are growing up in the neighborhood. What then? "Oh, it's their problem."
The levees were NOT built to spec, you're right, but they weren't spec'd to withstand (near) Category 5, anyway.
Your primary defense here is your sympathy towards your own people. I'm not against rebuilding in the area, but if we are going to rebuild it, the houses had better not be expensive. The city/state does hold the responsibility for rebuilding the homes that people lost due to their (the gov, not the people) incompetence. Whether or not that should be done in the lower 9th is questionable, and whether those homes should be permanent is, well... they probably shouldn't be. And to be crudely honest, we're talking about the poverty stricken, lower 9th ward. We don't want to see these people homeless, but we dont want to throw money and love and commitment into rebuilding the community for Katrina II to swagger on through and ruin it all over again. Not now. Not 100 years from now.
And your sept 11th rebuttle: Are you ***** serious? Even if you believe that it was the government that somehow allowed or pushed that attack, its a damn big pill to swallow to say that it WILL happen again sometime. It's possible, but its nowhere near as plausible as another hurricane throwing a knock out punch to New Orleans again. - DeusExVerra, on 12/06/2007, -0/+0For the lower 9th ward? Seriously?
1) They don't match the local architecture, at all.
2) Saying that they either need to be 15ft above ground or float capable is a bit outlandish. These homes need to be cheap and easy to build, because we'll probably be rebuilding them before long.
3) Not to be crude, but isn't this a bit much for the people living in the ninth ward? Impression I got was that it was a slum or "poverty stricken" nieghborhood. I hardly think a hurricane wiping it out justifies modern, high tech houses as most of these portray.
It's a good idea, in general, but they're throwing way to much Art and (hi-tech) Green at a problem that needs little more than basic, adequetly sized shelter with all of the necessary facilities. There is such a thing as "Natural" Green designs. Develop a floor plan that plays well with wind a light so the house will remain cool in the summer and warm in the winter.
I Like the solar panel idea but I have to wonder how well they will be maintained in that neighborhood. - DeusExVerra, on 12/06/2007, -0/+0I Agree, but I wouldn't push it too far. AS I said below, I like the Solar Panel Idea, but will their maintenance be the responsibility of the home owner? And are we going to be selling these houses or giving them away? Cost is a big function here. I say build them cheap, build them quick. Provide the Basics at a low cost, and invest the millions saved in improving the anti-"We're *****"-Catastrophe measures (levees and what not).
- thugok, on 12/06/2007, -1/+1A job? Seriously, if you can't afford a mortgage on $150k then you need to rethink your life.
- MeatyMcBeef, on 12/24/2007, -0/+0That is possibly the most insensitive thing I've ever heard. Poverty defined much of the city before Katrina and continues to define it today. Poor education and low paying jobs makes it next to impossible to build good credit.
