- byronshell, on 10/06/2008, -2/+58There is the problem, we keep spilling oil into the ocean. Maybe we need some type of sippy cup lids on platforms and duct tape on the pipes.
- dilpil1, on 10/07/2008, -5/+39So sad to see all that sweet delicious oil go to waste.
- nasdbroker73, on 10/06/2008, -9/+38This is why we shouldn't drill baby drill.
- Sunscreen, on 10/07/2008, -2/+26If only there were 6001 hulls! When will they learn!

- trendygamer, on 10/07/2008, -3/+18FREE OIL!!!!!
- sHockz, on 10/06/2008, -10/+24and thus we continue to kill off our oceans.....which btw are the most vital part of creating oxygen in the environment. oil spills like this increase the dead zones in the ocean. but who cares, just as long as we dont ***** it up bad enough while your here right?
- CurlyFoot, on 10/07/2008, -1/+15We're gonna need a lot of Dial
- vilago, on 10/07/2008, -1/+13actually the ***** has hit the fan. as long as people arent held accountable things will keeping going the way they are
- GoKings, on 10/07/2008, -0/+12Did the front fall off?
(Come on someone has to get this reference) - TheDHC, on 10/07/2008, -0/+11That's a huge load
- nibble4bits, on 10/07/2008, -8/+19DRILL BABY DRILL! .... pause.... NOT!
Hey McCain, do the fish love swimming around THESE off shore oil rigs?
Obama/Biden 2008!!! - jmpeagle, on 10/07/2008, -5/+16can't we just light the ocean on fire to clean out the oil?
- louiebaur, on 10/06/2008, -0/+10Ha Sippy Cup Lids... There is one solution.
- torgarman, on 10/07/2008, -6/+16Spill, baby, spill!
Let's build more critical energy infrastructure in the pathway of annual disaster. - phoenix3200, on 10/07/2008, -0/+9Did you know? You can use old motor oil to fertilize your lawn.
-Environmental Protection Agency - 2ndEdition, on 10/07/2008, -4/+13that's what she said
- GregIsLegend, on 10/06/2008, -2/+11Honestly, I've given up hope at this point. I think I'm going to cut my losses, not have kids and be thankful the ***** hasn't hit the fan just yet.
- yoyoadrian, on 10/07/2008, -3/+12drill baby drilllllllllllllllllllllllllllllll!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
- inactive, on 10/07/2008, -1/+9Great... The price of oil starts to fall, so they have to release some bad news to drive the prices back up again. ***** big oil, ***** the MPAA/RIAA, ***** main stream media, ***** terrorists, ***** it all. I'm so sick of this *****. I want to move to another planet that isn't manipulated by rich corrupt ***** with an agenda.
- DreKor, on 10/07/2008, -0/+7another question:
Why is this the first I've heard of this? Ike happened a while ago, so this oil must have been spilled a while ago too, right? Where's the delay in reporting coming from? - anteyekon4myst, on 10/07/2008, -0/+712000 is nothing over that period of time. thats the amount of output 3 or 4 mid size rigs should pump in a day. Dont get sucked into the hype. this is just another attempt to create the image of a supply shortage.
- Disgod, on 10/07/2008, -1/+8There is no such thing as drilling in America short term. It will take at least a decade, more than likely wouldn't see ***** until after 2020, for any appreciable amount of oil to be pumped from the newly opened offshore oil fields. And even then the amount of oil produced would be insignificant compared to the amount we use.
The best estimates say we'd get about 500,000 barrels of oil per day from the fields. That is a drop in the bucket compared to the 15-20 Million the US uses every day. That accounts for less than a 3% of our daily need, and that doesn't do anything to the price, and would be more environmentally harmful than putting that same money which would be used on drilling into renewable/alternative energy sources. - Allivian, on 10/07/2008, -1/+7This is true.
It burns on the surface so all we have to do is not let fish go near it.
Once its burnt out we can move on.
Someone run this by President Dubya - m85476585, on 10/07/2008, -0/+6The US uses about 20 million barrels of oil per day. That is equivalent to one of these spills every 4.3 seconds! That really puts our demand in perspective.
- divineorder, on 10/07/2008, -4/+10Not really. The technology is fundamentally flawed and environmentally incorrect. Who will pay for the cleanup? The industry should be charged until bankrupted to get this clean!
- goodinohio, on 10/07/2008, -0/+620 million! Must be what Madonna said.
- phybere, on 10/07/2008, -1/+7About $810,000... hardly even worth second thought to oil companies
- Barackalypse, on 10/07/2008, -4/+10You know they estimate 60-600 million gallons of oil seeps out of the ground all by itself every year, right? You think 500,000 gallons here makes any difference?
"Based on the above information and using the methods of Kvenvolden and Harbaugh (1983), the annual global oil seepage rate is now estimated to be between 200,000 and 2,000,000 tonnes (60 and 600 million gallons)"

- mcsenget, on 10/07/2008, -1/+6Hellooooooo
- inactive, on 10/07/2008, -6/+11That's obliviously what she said.
- offrdbandit, on 10/07/2008, -0/+5They did.
The shut everything down, because they can't man the facilities. They can't scrub the entire system (platforms, pipes, storage facilities, refineries, etc) of oil. - PhoenixCE, on 10/07/2008, -1/+6@patpl
Just imagine 500,000 gallons of oil in your backyard. That's alot of damn oil. - inactive, on 10/07/2008, -0/+5My precious..
- stack3r, on 10/07/2008, -2/+7One litre of used oil pollutes 1 million litres of water
One litre of used motor oil can contain cadmium, lead, benzene and polyaromatic hydrocarbons. Just one ounce tipped down the drain can create an oil slick big enough to cover four average household blocks
Burning 5 litres of used oil pollutes the same amount of air as a person breathes in three years
One litre of oil can form a 4000 m2 slick - Barackalypse, on 10/07/2008, -7/+11Guess what, the ocean contaminates itself, use mighty Google and read up on "natural seepage" (see, all that oil and gas is stored under pressure, and some of it leaks out). In fact, in North American waters natural seepage accounts for more oil in the water than anything we do (extraction, consumption, etc).
http://books.nap.edu/html/oil_in_the_sea/reportbri ... - explnx, on 04/27/2009, -3/+7Over 9000 barrels!
- stack3r, on 10/07/2008, -0/+4Like that matters...
- mr2man07, on 10/07/2008, -5/+9Noooo.... my life!!!!!
That could have been used to fuel the 5mpg Hummers! - Disgod, on 10/07/2008, -1/+5One simple reason to invest in alternatives to oil: Even if we were to tap every single source in the US we'd still be reliant upon foreign oil. We buy over 700 billion dollars worth of foreign oil per year. If it wasn't for buying foreign oil our trade deficit wouldn't disappear, but it'd be down wayy below 100 billion per year.
Drilling in the US wouldn't even make up a fifth of our oil needs, the only way to halt this is to get new alternative energy sources. T. Boone Pickens has it right, our dependence on oil will destroy this country.
Also we wouldn't have to give a crap about the Middle East. - acegi, on 10/07/2008, -0/+4let's drill off-shore they said
- Ruger11mcrdpi, on 10/07/2008, -0/+4Side note! Who knew we HAD 3,800 oil rigs in the gulf of mexico?/! wow!
- shig, on 10/07/2008, -0/+4In the northern part of the Gulf of Mexico 70,000 tons or crude oil, per year on average, naturally seeps onto the sea floor.
In the entire Gulf there is a per year average of 140,000-200,000 tons of crude oil seeping into the sea. Of the 200,000 tons, a third leaves the sea floor. There are also gas hydrate plumes blowing frozen natural gas onto vast fields of bacteria, worms, and certain types of algae forms that break the hydrocarbons down as food.
What all this adds up to, are incredible slicks which can be seen from outer space. Yet, here we are, worrying about a mere 12,000 barrels. It's chemicals from our municipal water supplies draining down the Mississippi River into the Gulf, which are creating dead areas and genetic freak fish. - BaKeDbEaN, on 10/07/2008, -1/+4This only shows up on 2 non main stream media sites. Seems a bit odd it not on CNN of MSNBC .don't you think.
- offrdbandit, on 10/07/2008, -1/+4Are you Amish? No?
Then STFU.... - lornali, on 10/07/2008, -1/+4This is shocking. The damage to the environment will be massive
- can0lard, on 10/07/2008, -2/+5The difference is that this natural seepage is distributed across the entire ocean, and it's a big freakin ocean. You cannot compare this to a concentrated slick of oil from a man made oil spill.
