- Suits, on 01/18/2009, -6/+52I'm from California and I say ***** Oil. Give me Wind, Solar and nuclear before oil.
I already have an Oil Refinery in my back yard. The Chevron refinery, here in Richmond California. All we have to show for it is higher gas prices than the national average, the fresh smell of sulfur, asthma, cancer and frequent chemical spills they always forget to notify us about and the ww2 siren sound that only goes off for testing purposes every first Wednesday of every month. This is happening today, not back in the day. Today. They're weren't even running at full capacity and they still have tons of environmental *****-ups.
Good for everyone. In November, Chevron just cleared the last hurdle to run at full capacity again. Chevron just promised they'll be cleaner this time. joy. - AnarchoGoth, on 01/18/2009, -3/+22Doesn't off shore oil drilling take years of planning and preparation?
- Vektuz, on 01/18/2009, -7/+20There is no way drilling for oil in california is going to even make up 5% of the oil needs of even california.
- dbzssj44676, on 01/18/2009, -5/+1799% of statistics are made up.
- rz8472, on 01/18/2009, -1/+12I smell an environmentally-themed action adventure starring the Governator.
- JimmyTheClam, on 01/18/2009, -1/+9Sure, but we have been drilling offshore of California since the 1960's.
It might take a couple of years to get the derricks up and producing, but the ground work has been done decades ago. - Headinawheel, on 01/18/2009, -2/+10Yeah. I live in Santa Barbara, and there's a company, Greka Oil, that, almost like clockwork, has spills.
It's ridiculous as hell. Plus: Off the coast there are already a damn tonne of Oil Platforms; if they wish to go through with their plan, why don't they just remove the ones they currently have, and then build the new ones, at least? - clickwir, on 01/18/2009, -4/+12Can we please just get some shiny objects into the Whitehouse to distract this guy for a few days.
STOP ***** UP OUR COUNTRY!!!!!!!!!! - JBnID, on 01/18/2009, -3/+10Isn't "alternate fuels" what NASA uses??? How cheap is their best effort so-far. Get real people, Oil is the most effective source or energy we have. Drill baby drill...........or pay higher prices.
- cyberdork, on 01/18/2009, -2/+887 billion barrels? Can you give a source for that number, because I can't find it anywhere on the web.
Considering the US has proved reserves of 21 billion barrels that looks like a ridiculous high number. - Ferretman, on 01/18/2009, -4/+9I sure hope they get this done, but I doubt it given the whackos coming into power on Tuesday.
We need to have our OWN energy sources of ALL kinds, and that means domestic oil production. We're slitting our own throats with knives we bought from the Chinese on credit, and there's no reason for it. - BitKid, on 01/18/2009, -0/+5Should be:
"...cancer and frequent chemical spills they always forget to notify us about."
...then another sentence about the siren.
He's not saying they don't notify people about the siren, he is talking about the spills.
Ah, the joys of trying to read other people's non-punctuated mess. - fabkebab, on 01/18/2009, -2/+7"they always forget to notify us about and the ww2 siren sound that only goes off for testing purposes every first Wednesday of every month"
If it happens in such a predictable way, what sort of notification do you need, out of curiosity? - edyang, on 01/18/2009, -2/+6This is the answer from the left for everything. Drilling offshore Cal will only make up 5%. ANWAR will only provide incremental 10%. Nuclear energy will only help another 15%. Offshore Florida is only another 5%. Gee, add it up and what do you get?
- edyang, on 01/18/2009, -1/+5We need oil.
We have oil.
Ergo we should get the oil.
Not sure what is so hard to understand. - JosephStalin, on 01/20/2009, -0/+3Really, we should be drilling everywhere we can possibly get domestic oil *and* work on alternatives.
- unit001, on 01/18/2009, -6/+9Its about time. I can't believe that despite the consensus on reducing dependence on foreign resources that there can be so much whining about developing domestic resources. Its a matter of course that if we reduce foreign imports we chose to rely on domestic production. Unless you put a windmill on the roof of your car.
- jpop, on 01/19/2009, -0/+3You forgot the "It won't do any good for 10 years" argument too!
- reticulate, on 01/19/2009, -0/+3As an Australian, I'd like to invite you to purchase some of our hot, fresh uranium.
You may find it more efficient than drilling for oil. - buschwacker, on 01/18/2009, -2/+5Offshore drilling isn't the answer because it won't make a real dent in our energy needs even once the rigs are supplying at 100%, and then it will take 15 years or more to achieve that 100%. Sure it sucks to be dependent on foreign sources of oil but the answer isn't creating more domestic supply, it is weaning ourselves off of oil itself with the huge expansion of alternative energy sources like wind, solar, and nuclear.
These sources are better for the environment in the long run because they have none of the problems of supply that you mentioned, and furthermore they also avoid nasty environmental impacts of oil drilling and the potential for spills. The expansion of America's energy supply infrastructure to accomodate new sources of energy will also create plenty of jobs and business opportunities for Americans which makes a hell of a lot more sense in my opinion than Bush's creation of conflict-based jobs for Cheny's cronies at Halliburton with his privatization of the military. No more offshore drilling! - slapthemonkey, on 01/18/2009, -4/+7Such acts in the closing days of the administration only add to his unpopularity
- theaceoffire, on 01/18/2009, -1/+3Maybe he forgot the /s?
- AriaStar, on 01/19/2009, -0/+2Wow, you're ignorant. See, living in the Bay Area takes a very high percentage of income. That 30% that's given as a guideline nationally? That doesn't work here. It's damned near impossible to save up the first/last/deposit most places require. Not all of us choose to be here. Many of us can't afford to save up to move away. What savings many of us do have is being used to cover bills after layoffs.
- crugg, on 01/18/2009, -1/+3cyberdork:
There is going to be no place on the net you will be able to find exact numbers, they are just estimates. There is an article by the Acrtic National Wildlife Refuge that speculates on the amount of oil in certain areas, mainly Southern California. That over half the undiscovered oil is located in these areas as well as a third of the undiscovered natural gas. Even though they did not give exact numbers it is important to understand the large quantity of the oil that could be contained in these areas. Secondly, this research was performed in and around 1998 and since then numerous changes in extraction technology have become available. So while the number of 87 billion barrels may not seem likely, it is true that the estimate of coastal oil off of California being large is true. This doesn't mean we should drill it right now or ever, but it is important to understand the resources that are available to use if the need were to arise in the future.
Link here: http://www.anwr.org/features/akeval.htm - downthefed, on 01/19/2009, -1/+3Or they could just legalize weed, and start capitalizing on that revenue. Considering all this oil nonsense will take several years to just get going and the massive capital costs it will take to get the oil coming out! What about putting up a few more solar panels in the sunny state?
- JimmyTheClam, on 01/18/2009, -6/+7Vektuz:
You liar!
There's about 87 billion barrels of oil sitting there off of California's coast. At its current rate of consumption, that oil could provide 100 percent of US fuel needs for the next 11 years. - enantiodromia, on 01/18/2009, -6/+7what an incredibly simple and misinformed description of the issue.
- notadiggtard, on 01/18/2009, -5/+6You chose to live there.STFU.As for prices,look to Sacramento,not Chevron.
- Trigononamous, on 01/18/2009, -6/+7I thought this was going to be an Onion article about drilling California off of the Continental United States. Needless to say, I am disappointed.
- AriaStar, on 01/19/2009, -0/+1Until a few years ago, I was still in Concord ad had to spend a good deal of time in Martinez. (For non-Bay Area people, it's the same area as Richmond, not far off.) That sulfur smell was terrible. Why the hell are we not harvesting more wind power? The Altamont already has some turbines, but why not do more?
- TequilaCollins, on 01/18/2009, -7/+8OK, how do I put this...
Bush is an *****!
I think that about sums it up. - RipleyIsDead, on 01/18/2009, -3/+4I like Keith Moon too much to agree with you.
- jpop, on 01/19/2009, -0/+1Only if they don't have anything in place. They've got plenty in place offshore already. Not enough for this work, but they've got something at least.
- edyang, on 01/19/2009, -1/+2The 15 year time frame has been disproven. It's more about 2 years or so.
Even if it were 15 years, if we had started in 1993 we'd be reaping the benefits now.
I do agree with you on the wind, solar and especially nuclear. It's also insanity to me that we don't have new nuke plants created while countries such as France and Japan have used them safely for decades. - edyang, on 01/18/2009, -1/+2I think you're the ***** for shooting down something that can contribute to lowering the price of gas for everyone.
- rheaume, on 01/18/2009, -1/+2"buy a garbage bag full of weed and smoke it all in one sitting"
That is actually an AWESOME proposal - AriaStar, on 01/19/2009, -1/+2You really think Bush thinks things through?
- inactive, on 02/18/2009, -0/+1Suits wrote: """I'm from California and I say ***** Oil."""
That is the beauty of you Kalifornians. You are like lawyers. There are few perversions you will avoid but drilling for oil.
Your own ideology is killing you. Californians are the source of their own problems - edyang, on 01/18/2009, -1/+2Yes, I"m sure that's what the left has planned.
- rheaume, on 01/18/2009, -3/+4You are a pathetic little man
- jpop, on 01/19/2009, -0/+1Solar doesn't work at night. Wind they have already in specific areas, but not enough areas (and they don't have storage capacity). Last I heard, they also don't have the distribution for it (they have to turn off some of the turbines because they make too much power for the lines). Nuclear. Um yeah, hippy state remember?
- AlbinoRaven, on 01/18/2009, -4/+4Its a proposal, which is as silly as coming up with the idea with a group of friends to buy a garbage bag full of weed and smoke it all in one sitting. While the idea appeals to many, the actual execution of the idea usually drops off after the third joint because you are out of cheesies, orange pop and you're all a sleep.
Proposal = useless - partrow, on 01/18/2009, -4/+4It is just as good of a place to drill as the Gulf of Mexico. If there are resources there, and they can be removed with little disturbance as is now the case, then drill.
The problem is that residents of the Peoples' Republic of California are such primadonnas that they think no one should touch the earth within 1000 miles of their state. They are also against using any hydrocarbon fuel at all, despite using it in massive amounts daily for transportation and electricity.
The continental shelf is not theirs, and they can squirm and whine all they want to. Sink those bits . . . - crugg, on 01/18/2009, -1/+1k
- coastdotcom, on 08/25/2009, -0/+0Why don't we just buy a third world country to drill in? It would be faster and cheaper...
- JBnID, on 01/18/2009, -2/+2What is it about fulfilling an OATH to perform a duty that ticks off Liberals? An oath puts your honor on the line, it's not just a promise.
I guess the real difference of opinions come in determining which is the most important of those duties to be performed by the President as delineated by the oath and by the Constitution.
I believe protecting the country, of which the office is a part, is job number ONE. As such, I also think GWB will be thought of very kindly by the biographers not yet born and the citizens for which they write history. WE will never know. - rheaume, on 01/18/2009, -3/+3Obama... wacko... wow dude go back to your palin shrine
- diamond360, on 07/09/2009, -0/+0Let me guess you live in California ??? or better yet ... your a looney liberal ??? I cant wait to see what Obama does (is doing). There is a reason when your credit card is about maxed out and you call for a credit limit increase they will tell you NNNOOOOOO.
But I guess trillions of debt isnt enough ??? Learn this word "quadrillion" ... yep were are well on our way. "Quadrillion" is after we are done with trillion... that is not 12 but 15 zero's.
Our national debt will be 1,000,000,000,000,000.00 (no joke). Wake up America... its time for everyone "INCLUDING" president Obamanation to tighten up his belt. STOP Spending my great, great, great, great grand kids money. - robbob, on 01/19/2009, -1/+1more of the same
