- MikeFromAmerica, on 11/05/2009, -2/+22Almost none of those were surprising.
Asphalt? Really? Unless you lost your sense of smell in some sort of horrible childhood accident, how can you NOT know that asphalt contains oil? - MrSparkle666, on 11/06/2009, -0/+7I don't think this is obvious to most people at all.
While I agree with your comment about oil being used simply because it is the easiest (and cheapest) way to produce other carbon based chemicals (hence it's ubiquity), you must be living on another planet if you think this is understood by most people, even people who frequent digg. - PlasticHotDog, on 11/06/2009, -0/+7This is why it's so important to find something else to power our cars. We should save the remaining oil for it's other uses that aren't as easily replaceable.
- TheSexyBeast821, on 11/06/2009, -1/+7Buried as if it isn't obvious that oil (a mix of hydrocarbons of various lengths) is the easiest and most common way to produce other chemicals that are carbon based (which most are).
- Hodor, on 11/05/2009, -0/+6What about sunny delight?
- zionoe, on 11/05/2009, -0/+2ohhh really...
- glasszach, on 11/06/2009, -1/+3The oil companies say that if we switch to electric vehicles they will be out of business, I think this proves that there is plenty of money to be made for them.
- ammundsen, on 11/06/2009, -0/+2None of these were very surprising. The most surprising place I found petroleum is seeping up into the parking lot of the La Brea Tar Pits. I found it interesting and was truly surprised to find it oozing out of the earth in downtown LA.
- CJ117, on 11/06/2009, -1/+3Hey woah! What do you know? All of these things listed could be replaced with HEMP.
Is it really a wonder why the plant is illegal? It's dangerous! (not to you, to profit margins!) - lennynumberone, on 11/06/2009, -0/+1Dick Cheney's bedroom. Enough for the next 20 years.
- geopiscean, on 11/06/2009, -0/+1This is really nice info...
- TheSexyBeast821, on 11/07/2009, -0/+1Alas I overestimate people.
- farfromsubtl, on 11/06/2009, -0/+1I love oil.
- Rukusx7, on 11/06/2009, -0/+1I'm pretty sure road construction actually INCREASED here since the price of oil went up.
Maybe its because i live right in the middle of oil country, Red Deer, Alberta, Canada. Who knows!
Also the recession has pretty much been declared over where i live since atleast the end of june... - streak, on 11/06/2009, -0/+1And then we have Chicken McNuggets that are 57% corn*.
*Source: Michael Pollan - skipvt, on 11/06/2009, -0/+1I guess you missed all those oil pumps all over the place...
- Hellahulla, on 11/06/2009, -0/+1Nah, it's because they know oil is running out, so they're getting as much of the country covered in the back stuff as possible before it actually does.
- xeomage, on 11/06/2009, -0/+1I, uh, gotta tell you, I had a WAY different idea of what this article was going to be about.
- AwakeAmerican, on 11/07/2009, -1/+1..all of which could be made using Hemp Oil instead. Renewable, safe, non polluting, uses CO2 to live. Want to go green...really go green!
- rlvis, on 11/06/2009, -0/+0Heart valves? *****, they're ruing the planet!
- inactive, on 11/06/2009, -1/+1Petroleum is awesome if can be refined into dozens if not hundreds of products.. but environmentally it is pretty bad, i.e oil spills, pollution, the billions of items floating in th Pacific ocean etc etc.
- Rukusx7, on 11/06/2009, -0/+0haha, that way when we run out, we just gotta scoop our petroleum back up off the highways hey? hahaha... nahh it is a non renewable resource, but i am pretty sure there is a lot more oil out there then they want us to beleive!
- toppgun, on 11/06/2009, -2/+1that cant be right. Guitar strings are nickel, at least the box of ernie ball slinky's right next to me say they are nickel. Rubbing alcohol is pure alcohol with water and an additive to make you throw it up/ denature it. Unless there are ingredients that I dont know about this article is wrong. Although its poor writing. It makes a lot of claims without backing them up. I dont deny that there is oil in everything we use, but the writing is amateur at best.
